Sick abroad with no insurance. Please be nice, I know I'm a dumbass

Am on a European citibreak with DP. Arrived on Friday. I felt ill on the plane and again in the taxi. That night I woke up with excruciating upper abdo pain (in waves, almost like contractions) and worst black liquid shits of all time. Am alternating between freezing and boiling.

No nausea or vomiting. No back pain.

Haven't eaten since Friday. Still shitting through the eye of a needle.

DP has gone out to get diaoralyte, immodium and the strongest pain relief you can buy otc here.

I would've gone to urgent care if I had had insurance but just can't afford a big bill or risk them admitting me and missing my flight.

Does it sound like pancreatitis?

I had a bit of a binge Thursday night as was end of work before our holiday and also the eurovision semi final. 1 bottle of wine and a large gin. I don't drink regularly. I eat low carb/low fat and am a bit overweight but working on losing it.

I know I'm an idiot for forgoing insurance. Believe me, will never do it again.

😭

Why do people keep posting on threads that were started 2 days ago when the OP only posts once?

Mumsnet baffles me sometimes.

Also, some of the threads. I've seen a really disgusting health thread that I woul be embarrassed about. Why wouldn't you just go to A&E?

BrightOrangeOrange · 17/05/2022 21:41

Not this health thread.

Couldn't agree more. This thread baffles me. There have been loads of one post and done threads recently. The op doesn't care enough to post more than once and no idea why others can be bothered to respond. Personally I think it's either made up in a drunken late night moment or incredibly rude.

One post threads….for traffic…raises advertising revenue???

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/05/2022 22:02

At least it might make one or two others think twice about not bothering with insurance.

Knittingchamp · 17/05/2022 22:16

Or the poor woman is extremely ill in hospital?!

I know but I don't think for one minute she is she is going to be reading the replies. Especially the unhelpful ones -I hope she isn't.

Greenstick · 17/05/2022 22:27

Yup, maybe there's a reason the poor lass only posted once. and there was everyone accusing her.

I don’t know. You just did, though, so maybe ask yourself the question.

BrightOrangeOrange · 17/05/2022 22:32

What I meant was why are people still posting 2 days after. They needed the advice then not too days ago. Why post on an old question?

Because I was following the OP and there was no other post.

Maybe she's in hospital

Yeh, that's a fair point. She could have been asking for advice genuinely, then took it and (fingers crossed) is getting treatment.

Maireas · 17/05/2022 22:37

Well I hope that's the case - she was in a state, asked for advice, took it and is getting treatment. Good points about insurance though.

Yet you still posted (twice) - keeping the thread in active so people see it and comment (often not checking the date. It's in active so many assume its current)

And again, you are still doing it, so just ask yourself.

😭

if you haven’t already fill out GHIC card application online now, check if your bank covers you for travel then go see a pharmacist or go to A & E & deal with any cost later.
Hope you get the help you need & get well soon ❤

Don’t you just love it when posters come on and repeat the advice OP was given 3 DAYS AGO, like they’re the first one who thought of it 😆

Learnsometjingeveryday · 19/05/2022 07:00

My brother goes on holiday many times a year he said u can buy insurance on line for 3 pound while you are out there if u need it , I never had insurance when I went doctors in canary Islands they just charged me 10euros x

QuebecBagnet · 19/05/2022 07:08

You can technically buy insurance when you’re out there but I’m fairly sure they wouldn’t pay out. There will be a period where you can’t claim after purchase surely or everyone would do this? I know for pet insurance you can’t claim for 14 days.

Well of course you cn but youcant expect it to pay out for something that has already happened

Not everything costs the same as your one visit to a specific doctor for a specific problem

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/05/2022 10:04

From some of the posts on here the alleged 20% who go abroad without insurance is becoming more credible - what amazes is me is that, when it all goes tits up and some take to crowdfunding sites, there are strangers who are prepared to bail them out Hmm

If insurance only costs £3, why on earth not get it in the first place?

That may be a local insurance and wouldn't pay for repatriation if needed
