Does anyone remember these cakes?

Before cup cakes were the horrid icing covered monstrosities they are today, Sainsburys used to sell a 6 pack of ‘cup cakes’ which were chocolate sponge with chocolate icing.

They were in a gold (or silver, definitely metallic) cake case and the icing wasn’t fluffy. It was thick and kind of solid and perfectly level with the top of the cake cases…

I hadn’t thought about them in years but suddenly remembered, had a look today and nothing and wondered where I could get similar??

Oo yes I remember them. So much nicer than cupcakes!

EinsteinaGogo · 28/04/2022 20:33

Yes! And there were orange and lemon flavours too?

20viona · 28/04/2022 20:33

Yes they were so good! Got a feeling they were
Baking Boys / Baker Boys ??

Happydays321 · 28/04/2022 20:34

Oh yes, they were lovely!

JoeGoldberg · 28/04/2022 20:34

I remember them, my mum used to get them from morrisons.

PlinkPlankPlunk · 28/04/2022 20:35

I also remember these. The icing was flat and quite shiny. And taste of fake chocolate IIRC

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 28/04/2022 20:35

They were revolting. People just get all nostalgic on MN for anything that isn't a cupcake.

LIZS · 28/04/2022 20:35

The icing was fudgy.

onepieceoflollipop · 28/04/2022 20:35

Baker boys! I used to have one in my packed lunch

LemonRedwood · 28/04/2022 20:36

I do! Used to take the chocolate off the top and eat it last.

I remember them being Lyons as well. Have found this picture but not somewhere that sells then

Don’t know if that link works but Fiona Cairns cupcakes at Waitrose. Chocolate ones in pack of six and other flavours too!

Unicornspirit · 28/04/2022 20:38

Fabulous bakin boys double chocolate cupcakes

thecurtainsofdestiny · 28/04/2022 20:38

I loved those!

Lyons used to do a mixed pack - chocolate , lemon and orange.

Later, Baker Boys used to do them.

I remember them as a summer holiday treat.

JoeGoldberg · 28/04/2022 20:41

Ah yeah Lyons! I liked how the chocolate was all frilly when you took the foil off.

Chelsea26 · 28/04/2022 20:57

Ha - glad so many people remember them. I don’t think we ever got the lemon and orange versions; they were definitely my dad’s and a special treat for us!

The baking boys look very similar, but I’m fairly sure ours were sainsbury’s own brand ( talking early/mid 80’s) - the posh Waitrose ones are similar too but I imagine too rich for me at my age!

I will give BB’s a go!

and yes to frilly chocolate and peeling it off to eat last 😂

Fabulous bakin boys?

Longdistance · 28/04/2022 21:55

Yes, I remember them, I used to work for them many moons ago.

CakeIsMyFavouriteAndBest · 28/04/2022 22:01

The waitrose ones taste just like the lyons ones. My mum used to buy both the chocolate and the orange and lemon ones when we were small (70's child).
Waitrose Fiona Cairns ones are not cheap but delicious. Definitely recommend them!
