Does anyone remember these cakes?

Before cup cakes were the horrid icing covered monstrosities they are today, Sainsburys used to sell a 6 pack of ‘cup cakes’ which were chocolate sponge with chocolate icing.

They were in a gold (or silver, definitely metallic) cake case and the icing wasn’t fluffy. It was thick and kind of solid and perfectly level with the top of the cake cases…

I hadn’t thought about them in years but suddenly remembered, had a look today and nothing and wondered where I could get similar??

M&S used to do them too. I loved them when I was a child

TotalRhubarb · 28/04/2022 22:05

I KNEW it’d be about those cupcakes as soon as I saw the title! They were so good. The lemon and orange ones weren’t bad either.

Waitrose do a box of four iced chocolate cupcakes that are very good. The icing is different - bigger and whipped. But they’re really delicious.

Oh yes, I remember these! They seemed enormous - or was that because I was small then? 🤣

Weirdly, as soon as I read the title of the thread, I KNEW you'd be talking about these ones! They were lush 😋

TheChosenTwo · 28/04/2022 22:14

My dds used to really like the baker boys ones, we were talking about them the other day and realised I hadn’t seen them in years!

Ha - glad so many people remember them. I don’t think we ever got the lemon and orange versions; they were definitely my dad’s and a special treat for us!

The baking boys look very similar, but I’m fairly sure ours were sainsbury’s own brand ( talking early/mid 80’s) - the posh Waitrose ones are similar too but I imagine too rich for me at my age!

I will give BB’s a go!

and yes to frilly chocolate and peeling it off to eat last 😂

I don't think you can get the Fabulous Baking Boys ones anymore.
They used to be a big hit in this house but not seen them for years.

Leftbutcameback · 28/04/2022 22:27

When you pulled the foil case off you then had some icing left to eat from the case! I frequently think about these.

woodhill · 28/04/2022 22:30

Loved the chocolate ones but not so keen on the orange and lemon versions

Neverendingdust · 28/04/2022 22:34

Hated them, I’d much rather just have a fairy cake.

Lizziekisss · 28/04/2022 22:36

Used to love the chocolate ones. Kept them in the fridge so the icing was hard and could be snapped.

custardbear · 28/04/2022 22:42

They were awesome!
I loved ginger cake too, with custard!

Dundonian · 28/04/2022 22:44

Remembering these yummy cakes has made me smile!

Chelsea26 · 28/04/2022 22:45

@Leftbutcameback Yes - very perfect straight lines of icing that could be scraped off with teeth (that makes me shudder these days!)

@Lizziekisss Nw we had a cold one - they were in the cupboard with the cereal in our house!

Haven't seen Baking boys muffins around for a while.

annlee3817 · 28/04/2022 23:00

Oh I used to love those and when finished they'd be chunks of icing in between the folds of the cupcake case

worriedatthistime · 28/04/2022 23:11

Yes

curlymom · 28/04/2022 23:28

Loved them. I’m now disappointed as I hadn’t realised they don’t do them any more. Why?!

NainAGP · 28/04/2022 23:36

Kunzel cakes, maybe?

OldWivesTale · 28/04/2022 23:38

They were Lyons and they were bloody gorgeous! Why did they stop making them? Then the Baker Boys did a similar one but even they have disappeared now...

BrylcreamBeret · 28/04/2022 23:41

Eww I remember those awful Baker Boys cakes, they tasted stale and dry but my boss thought they were such a nice treat so kept buying them, I was gutted 😂 I loved (LOVED) the same type of cake that Ferrari's used to make in the 90s though, they had blue or white fudgy icing on a huge cupcake with a gaudy plastic ring on. Knocked the sprinkles off the ones from Greggs! I'm way too invested in cake

chisanunian · 28/04/2022 23:54

Sainsburys ones were the best, we used to have them fairly often when I was a child. I used to love picking off all the chocolately bits caught in the corrugated cake case.

I also loved the orange and lemon flavour, and if memory serves me right, for a short time they also did strawberry ones. Anybody else remember those?

augustusglupe · 28/04/2022 23:54

Yes I loved them!
My SIL used to buy them when I went to stay with her and my DB. Late seventies. I remember peeling off the chocolate too.

BowerOfBramble · 28/04/2022 23:59

I’m sure the cases were silver and the icing was very vanilla-y and like a sort of fondant fudge icing hybrid. Unforgettable!

Snoopsnoggysnog · 29/04/2022 00:04

I remember these but I think Cadbury’s did a version.

anyway I was going to recommend the Fiona Cairns ones from Waitrose. They are really really good.
