Does anyone remember these cakes?

Before cup cakes were the horrid icing covered monstrosities they are today, Sainsburys used to sell a 6 pack of ‘cup cakes’ which were chocolate sponge with chocolate icing.

They were in a gold (or silver, definitely metallic) cake case and the icing wasn’t fluffy. It was thick and kind of solid and perfectly level with the top of the cake cases…

I hadn’t thought about them in years but suddenly remembered, had a look today and nothing and wondered where I could get similar??

I knew it would be these! The ones I remember we're Mr Kipling - the Baker Boys ones weren't as good, the icing wasn't as fudgy.

Yes, that’s what we used to call cupcakes! Loved the Lyons ones.

Except they're out of date!!!

I remember these. They were delicious! The icing was really thick and hard.

I remember them too! I liked them in the fridge so the choc would go hard

Thanks to this thread I just bought the Fiona Cairns ones in Waitrose and can confirm they are absolutely DELICIOUS.

£6 for six. We scoffed them in the car park. (Only one each!)

Highly recommend.

And not a sniff of salted caramel in sight!

Oh yes, we used to have the orange and lemon ones all the time when I was a child. Weekend lunch always came with a cupcake.

Real cupcakes! So unlike their sickly American cousins which appear to be designed as decor, not food. I expect nobody else can remember the joy of an individual chocolate Kunzle cake, also a delight.
