^❗️For the second day in a row in blocked Mariupol, Russian troops have been assaulting the Azovstal plant, in the dungeons of which Ukrainian defenders and civilians who have not yet been evacuated remain.

Ukrainian Pravda, citing its own sources, reports that the Russians broke into the plant, which had previously been bombed and shelled. Heavy fighting is underway right now, there is no communication with the Ukrainian military for the moment.^

Still many civilians there.

A report that Moscow trying to get at Sweden now, mind you I can't read the Russian

A public campaign is being held in Moscow calling for the "denazification" of Sweden. This was reported by Anonymous.

“In Moscow, people are publicly circulating calls for the ‘denazification’ of Sweden. Now Russia intends to terrorize Sweden so much with the suffering of Ukraine or a nuclear holocaust for them to abandon the idea of joining NATO”, reads the statement.

Russia now uses "denazification" as a code for "don't join NATO", with a not so subtext that NATO = Nazis Hmm

OwlsDance · 04/05/2022 15:31

It says "we [in Russian flag colours] are against nazism, they [in Swedish colours] are not" and then list Astrid Lingren, a Swedish composer, and the IKEA founder. I can't really read what it says about them, the text gets too blurry to zoom in.

AP evidence points to 600 dead in Mariupol theater airstrike

That article breaks your heart.

OwlsDance · 04/05/2022 15:32

Sorry, not composer, it's Ingmar Bergmann, a film producer

Sorry didn’t mean to cause anxiety. Agree that people are getting more angry with the threats now. Of course some anxiety is warranted it’s a big threat.
I just meant I think he’s singling out the UK for numerous reasons and a lot of them aren’t actually to do with what we are doing in Ukraine as such but more that the government has had the balls to do it after being so in bed with Russian money. We know russia plays the long game in propaganda/sticking fingers in pies etc. I guess maybe they thought NATO countries and Europe wouldn’t be so staunch in their support of Ukraine as they have been.

OwlsDance · 04/05/2022 15:42

I think he sees UK as an extension of US (they often refer to both as "Anglo-Saxons"), but US is big and scary to bark at.

This is exactly how I'd put it too, @OwlsDance.

Love that @OwlsDance

Did you listen to Ukrainecast? They were talking about this today and I wasn't particularly aware of how they lump the UK and the US together before that.

No, I didn't, but they've always done that as far as I remember really. I haven't watched any russian TV for a long time, but I do wander over to their news websites now and again to amuse myself.

I’m not finding people around me particularly scared re nuclear threat, either the people who follow what’s going on in the rest of the world or those who don’t take much notice, despite the Mail’s best efforts to scare everyone. I think there’s just a growing anger with Russia.

The IKEA founder was a nazi, although he's long dead so not sure why it bothers Putin so much.

NEW: Russia has about 2,000 troops left in Ukraine's besieged city of Mariupol: senior U.S. defense official. Most of the 10 Russian battalion tactical groups previously in Mariupol have moved north of the city, but are stalled to refit for Donbas fight.

I think, like with North Korea, people eventually get bored of the toddler tantrums.

The closed their shops? It'll be the founder of the MaccyD next. Bet he was a nazi too 😉

⚡️ Austrian minister: No fast-track EU procedure for Ukraine.

Austria’s EU and Constitutional Affairs Minister Karoline Edtstadler said Ukraine’s accession to the EU cannot be achieved "in the next five to ten years," according to Euractiv.

Looks like a mole in the camp! No surprise there, along with Hungary. Just like the UN, a veto power weakens considerably when used for certain reasons.

Same with the oil sanctions. I read the EU will make exemptions for those very heavily reliant (fair enough) but I guess that's the only way to get this sanction through.

prettybird · 04/05/2022 17:55

Stalin divvied up Poland in a pact with Nazi Germany. Does that make the USSR, Stalin and now Russia Nazis? Confused

Countries move on although in the case of Russia, it would appear not Hmm

TiddyTidTwo · 04/05/2022 17:55

"Mariupol mayor reports Russian forces have entered the Azovstal steelworks. Contact has been lost w/Ukrainian troops within, who are alongside civilians. Reports of heavy fighting — hard to imagine the hell those Ukrainian troops & civilians are enduring"

FFS. How many civilians are still in there?! 😢

MagicFox · 04/05/2022 18:11

🤮 this is that knob who threatened to sink the UK with a nuclear tidal wave last week, now drinking a Campari and waving his willy in some matching trunks. Parallel universe

several hundred I'm afraid. there are consistent hints of attempts to get them out in the last 4 days but ... Yeah.

Given how contemptuous Russia is of the UN, I don't think that much can be expected. Remember how the Russian TV mocked the UN visit. Guterres achieved a little bit but not much.

TiddyTidTwo · 04/05/2022 18:34

Lj times like this you pray for an A10 or three to clear the decks....

I know it can't happen but, so bloody frustrating

Igotjelly · 04/05/2022 18:35

They’ve re-established contact with those inside the steel plant. God its like a fucked up rollercoaster.
