In case we think Azovstal means the Russians are getting soft, they also fired on buses going to evacuate people in Popasna and kidnapped a history teacher who was driving one of the vehicles. Elsewhere - and the Ukrainian MoD has confirmed this story - they killed a mother and tied her young child to her, along with an explosive device. When somebody went to rescue the child the device exploded.

I had not read of that monstrous act. Consciously using someone’s humanity towards another to kill them both epitomises evil.

Reports that Gerasimov wasn't wounded and had already left, though they are saying that 200(!) were killed in the attack.

There are some mutterings about regime change in Moscow on Twitter. I think it's a hiding to nothing and quite rightly, the official focus is on running down Russia's capacity for war. Even if Putin dropped dead tomorrow, his replacement is likely to be similar. After all, he was a product of the system, not an aberration. Even if Navalry somehow got into power, we can't comfortably switch off and ignore them again - he is an ultranationalist and it's going to be a Biblical task to turn off the corruption.

The story about the mother-child bomb is abhorrent. A large part of me hopes it is not true whilst the rest fears it is.

Breaking :

"U.S Congressional Representative Adam Kinzinger today introduced a Joint-Resolution authorizing the use of Military Force to secure the Territorial Integrity of Ukraine in the case that Russian Forces use Chemical, Biological, or Nuclear Weapons against the Country"

Important to note this is just a proposal - it would need backing something which I don't think Biden would do

Russian troops have stolen $5 million worth of new farm equipment but it was equipped with GPS, meant that its travel could be tracked. It was last tracked to the village of Zakhan Yurt in Chechnya.

The equipment ferried to Chechnya, which included combine harvesters -- can also be controlled remotely. "When the invaders drove the stolen harvesters to Chechnya, they realized that they could not even turn them on, because the harvesters were locked remotely," the contact said

Imagine. Going to the effort of stealing a combine harvester, only to find its remotely locked when you have transportted it thousands of miles away!

I heard that they only came across the harvesters and tractors by accident after pulling over for a rest and while scrolling for porn.

LOL 😂 brilliant reference there

That makes sense that Kizingers only proposing boots on the ground in case of chemical attacks.

Highly doubtful that Biden would actually approve it.

saltedcaramelchocolate · 02/05/2022 07:33

I saw on CNN this morning that a Ukrainian woman had been sent a photo of her sons body. He had been a soldier in the Azovstal plant and had been captured by the Russians. He had been shown in a Russian propaganda video after his capture where the Russians were promising to treat them well. Five days later his mother received a message on her phone showing his dead body.
When CNN rang back the number they hung up.

>There are some mutterings about regime change in Moscow...

I don't see it coming in the near future, unless it is related to Putin's health. He would probably be followed by the devil you don't know so well, so more a change of individual than regime.

Ijsbear · 02/05/2022 08:12

Reports now that Gerasimov had departed to Russia just before the attack on the command post where he'd been. Another general was killed and a lot of general staff, according to the reports.

A lot of reports of trouble in Belgorod and some detailed reports of plans for false flag activities in Transnistra.

It seems odd to me that the Ukranians would waste resources attacking Belgorod given the air defenses there unless 1) there was something special happening or 2) it's false flag again.

Wonder if false flag attacks will increase leading up to May 9th, given Putin a 'reason' to officially declare war?

Well one can only hope things haven’t improved…

it would certainly be interesting if they went off in the silos.

Not really, as in such confusion, a retaliatory response could be launched against the USA.... i remember the collapse of the old USSR, it was a very worrying time, nuclear states imploding can be extremely dangerous, probably far more than if Putin remained in situ.

Its not wise to think Russia cannot have effective nuclear weapons when they can put men into space and build hypersonic missiles.

Russian ambassador to Israel has been summoned to the Israeli Foreign Ministry after the anti-Semitic statement of the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov that "Hitler had Jewish blood" via AT AmichaiStein1

Israeli FM Yair Lapid rails against Russian FM Lavrov's claim Hitler had "Jewish blood." "His remarks were unforgivable and ludicrous, and a grave historical inaccuracy. The Jews did not murder themselves in the Holocaust" via AT JudahAriGross

Spectactular own goal by Lavrov there...

Igotjelly · 02/05/2022 09:12

What do we make of Lavrov’s comments hat May 9th holds no significance for them in this war?

Ijsbear · 02/05/2022 09:15

Personally I think that it means they know they aren't anywhere near as successful as they want to be.

I wonder if there's a hint too that if they establish full control over the East and South then they will strike West again and try to take over all of Ukraine.

There are 25,000+ Russian mothers missing sons. I wonder if we will hear anything from them around May 9th.

Igotjelly · 02/05/2022 09:18

I do wonder too about the 9th being a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy. The West have banged on about it and obsessed over it for so long now.

Igotjelly · 02/05/2022 09:22

How many civilians were at the steel plant to start with, CNN reporting that as of this morning 200 remain there.

Re your post yesterday: I am glad you have been living here safely for twenty years and not in Donetsk where your relatives are.

What you describe about their Russian propaganda induced blindness to what has been happening must be very difficult for you though. I am sure too you must feel Ukrainian at your core and find all this horror unfolding extremely upsetting.

Ijsbear · 02/05/2022 09:28

Varying claims about the Steelworks between 300 - 1000.

I feel sickened that the US doesn’t have any moral high ground over white phosphorous have killed civilians with it in Iraq. Maybe Biden would have that in mind.
