Talking to my dad last night and he says my (Ukrainian) SIL is finding it very difficult with her parents. She lives in France and they live in Russia and refuse to believe that Russia is doing anything untoward Sad

In good news, she and db have managed to find somewhere local to them for their refugees (cousin's wife, sister, mother and sister's dd) to stay. Smile

That is good news.
I wonder what your DB’s Russian parents-in-law think the reason for relatives being refugees is? It must be very difficult for your SIL.

This might be total bullshit but you hear this so much re those in Russia not believing what their relatives are telling them. Whilst I don’t doubt that some are completely brainwashed I do wonder if there may also be a fear of communications being monitored and the ramifications if you’re seen to not be sticking to the official Russian line.

prettybird · 02/05/2022 09:41

@ScrollingLeaves - don't know Confused. Haven't spoken to her myself: I tend to WhatsApp message my db. It's a delicate subject Sad

I mean bullshit in terms of what I’m saying not insinuating that other posters are talking bullshit! Just reread that there an thought it sounded so offensive!

What do we make of Lavrov’s comments hat May 9th holds no significance for them in this war?

He is trying to say that dates generally have no importance. This is a subconscious message to his wife. He has forgotten their wedding anniversary in at least five out of the last six years because he cannot remember whether it was the 8th or 9th May they got married and he is too scared to ask her.

RedToothBrush · 02/05/2022 09:50

Kamil Galeev AT kamilkanzi
Judging from social media some Russians in Crimea are preparing to leave:

"Lukashenko is negotiating with Ukraine. It means Putin lost the war"
"After Mariupol they won't spare even civilians"
"Khokhols won't forgive Bucha and Mariupol"
"They'll bomb the bridge and we r trapped"

So much winning here.

prettybird · 02/05/2022 09:51

@Igotjelly - don't think it is anything to do with "fear of being monitored" Sad

Ukraine claiming this morning they have destroyed two patrol boats off Snake island by Bayraktar.

I suspect we will see more activity over this region over coming days. There seems to be a growing possibility of a sea borne assault on Odessa.

I had realised what you meant - sure others must have too.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 02/05/2022 10:23

@TargusEasting

Can you expand on why you think there could be a sea borne assault on Odesa shortly?

Ps, you are genuinely very funny. You should be a writer if you're not one already!

Igotjelly · 02/05/2022 10:31

Total aside here but can we just appreciate for a moment that Nancy Pelosi is 82. Just saw a photo of her with the Polish President.

minsmum · 02/05/2022 10:39

The Times have said that although the civilians in Mariupol are taken to Russia they will then travel into Ukraine

minsmum · 02/05/2022 10:40

First time I have tried to date a link I hope it works

Im sure you are right in most cases but I did see a story of someone contacting their uncle, getting the "it's not the Russians bombing you" line and then later he contacted her on a burner phone saying "im sorry, I believe you, I daren't say anything on my own phone"

ShinyHat22 · 02/05/2022 11:04

Pelosi is doing great on this isn’t she? 82 🙂

prettybird · 02/05/2022 11:14

@Ijsbear I suspect that that may well be the case with the younger generation.

In SIL's parents case, who are in their 70s/80s, they're very much in the camp that "Putin can do no wrong" Hmm The fact that they are comfortably middle class (iirc, one in St Petersburg, the other in Moscow) suggests that they've done well from not rocking the boat Sad

At least their dd got out and no longer has to use her Russian passport Smile

Ijsbear · 02/05/2022 11:20

I suspect that people who grew up in the age when the Soviet state provided a place to live and food and medical care hanker back to that age rather strongly when they get old. Putin tells you what's going on (even if he's lying as often as he breathes) and provides (false) certainties. Quite appealing to many people and I think especially to older ones who lived through the disintegration of communism and the disaster and uncertainty of the 90's.

Tonight Ukrainian planes have bombed Russian Belgorod. Reportedly this is a plane dropping IRCMs to cover its retreat back home and recorded by an ordinary civilian from their smartphone^

What is an IRCM? couldnt find it on google. Inter something continental missile?

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 02/05/2022 11:40

@Ijsbear that would explain a lot.

Infra red counter measures. Typically flares to confuse a heat seeking missile.

^Kharkiv defenders receive binoculars worth almost EUR 35,000
The Kharkiv defense forces have received a batch of modern optics as assistance from the people of Cyprus, the Netherlands, and Poland, namely 200 binoculars worth almost EUR 35,000^

also this is an interesting read. Ukraine claims to have averted a plot where a false flag operation to shoot down a passenger jet would take place

www.ukrinform.net/rubric-ato/3472510-russian-mole-exposed-in-ukraine-armys-general-staff-adviser-to-presidents-office-chief.html

I can't imagine the Kadyrovites are too pleased if they hear about this bit:
He added that this false-flag attack was allegedly supposed to be carried out using Ukrainian weapons - portable anti-aircraft missile systems. The spies planned to obtain the weapons, used by our troops, through volunteers. To this end, they had been trying to win trust of the latter, giving them real data on the movement of Russian troops, giving away the coordinates of Ramzan Kadyrov’s ethnic Chechen unit

I suspect the Russians despise the Chechens. Incidently the Chechens along with the Wagnerians have the worst reputation of all the invading forces from bits here and there.
