It's WW3.

There's a load of bullshit talk and "defensive" weapons yada yada yada. We are in WW3

I doubt it.

And panicking isn't going to help anyone anyway. As @Igotjelly says, we might be heading into some sort of cold war, where the West tries to contain Russia.

(And China. Let's not take our eyes off China, either.)

EdithStourton · 30/04/2022 20:09

Also evacuation of 20 people from Azovstal reported on BBC.

Igotjelly · 30/04/2022 20:11

Got to say if this does go on for years my mental health is going to be in tatters. I need to find a better coping mechanism than doomscrolling.

TiddyTidTwo · 30/04/2022 20:14

I'm absolutely not panicking. It was obvious we would get to this point at the start of all this. Like I i have said a billion times in here ..kicking the can down the road. And here we are, still scratching our arses trying to appease someone who has been pissing up our backs telling us it's raining whilst the biggest part of the Eu has been and continues to fund him at at rate of £1 billion a day.

I see it how it is

MagicFox · 30/04/2022 20:14

I know, I want my children to have the chance to live a full and free and happy life: the thought of this hanging over them (and worse) is unbearable

Thanks for the articles about links between Russia and the US far right @PerkingFaintly , horrifying that they think the same way about many things. It's interesting they follow Alexander Dugin (Russian, wrote a book called the Foundations of Geopolitics, highly rated by Russian military, you can see it has influenced what is happening now).

This is the part in the Wiki page for Foundations of Geopolitics about Ukraine:
Ukraine should be annexed by Russia because "Ukraine as a state has no geopolitical meaning, no particular cultural import or universal significance, no geographic uniqueness, no ethnic exclusiveness, its certain territorial ambitions represents an enormous danger for all of Eurasia and, without resolving the Ukrainian problem, it is in general senseless to speak about continental politics". Ukraine should not be allowed to remain independent, unless it is cordon sanitaire, which would be inadmissible.

I'm glad that 20 people have escaped from Azovstal in Mariupol, I hope there are more soon, there are hundreds still trapped.

I don't think I'm going to listen to Ukrainecast then!

MagicFox · 30/04/2022 20:16

Your frankness is appreciated Tiddy. I like how the thread is a community of diverse perspectives and diverse responses. We all learn from each other

Just watching BBC and feel really stupid. Here I am worrying about something hypothetical and some poor bugger is picking debris out of his front room after a shell hit it.

TiddyTidTwo · 30/04/2022 20:20

Magic I love you 😍

I'm not ashamed to be absolutely hawkish and I appreciate this space on here to be it. I stand by my thinking on thread one, I listen and take in everyone's thoughts and go away and think but I come back and stand by my thoughts.

Igotjelly · 30/04/2022 20:22

Got to say I do love the lack of thread police! It takes all sorts for a decent convo otherwise it’s just an echo chamber.

MagicFox · 30/04/2022 20:23

I was just about to reply to Tids and say exactly that Jelly! What good is an echo chamber? Thank goodness for this thread

I will absolutely not accept genocide, the raping and killing of women and children, ordinary people being tied behind their backs and being shot in the head then being piled into mass graves. In Europe, OUR Europe in 2022. People like us. There is no excuse, no matter what we fear for ourselves because if we let this go then it will be us next.

MagicFox · 30/04/2022 20:31

I can't believe they for all their 'nazis everywhere' narrative all of the Russian imagery is...a duplicate. Wtf is going on?

It's weird isn't it , I have been at work all day today, no access to social media and very little news, other than odd bits on the radio in the car, so I got back from work and didn't have any impending doom scenarios running through my head.

As for @TiddyTidTwo 'its WWIII' , I just cannot agree yet. If anything it feels more like 'he's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy' territory.

TiddyTidTwo · 30/04/2022 20:47

No I'm done
I can't right now at the selfishness

I can't

YorkshireLondonMiss · 30/04/2022 20:49

@Igotjelly @MagicFox second that! @TiddyTidTwo Im always grateful for your input on this thread, no matter how hawkish. Good to keep it balanced and real and everyone’s insights are valuable.

MagicFox · 30/04/2022 20:52

I do agree with Tiddy that was pretty insensitive. People are being killed in the most horrific ways, children fgs. In 2022. It's an existential crisis in more ways than one - what kind of humanity is this?

Just watched BBC’s Zelensky - the making of a president. Quite enjoyed it.

Agree. And even if we weren't next, Putin still needs to be stopped.

I have to say that these threads have managed to remain respectful on what is an extremely emotive subject and that is quite rare. I really appreciate everyone's contribution. @MMBaranova I have really appreciated your posts and hope your family are making it through each day.

Ijsbear · 30/04/2022 21:19

When has it ever stopped?

You don't have to go back very far, only about 4-5 years.

Humanity - Some of us can see only the sewage and want to drag everyone else into it, while others see the stars and want people to rise and improve. We're a wide range.

What's happening here is that the war is closer to our doorstep and it's not a civil war but an invasion. But - life is not secure.

Ijsbear · 30/04/2022 21:23

yes @MMBaranova your perspective is really helpful

As was @Mb76's comment. It must be very hard for you, Mb76. I hope your family are safe.

I say it every time but they must be running a bit short on generals by now!

Whilst I agree with the above to a certain extent , how many threads were there on MN when Russia 'annexed' Crimea ?

Just for clarity the 'he's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy' wasn't alluding to Putin, he is just your common or garden, Class A* Twat, it was more 'its not WWIII , its something not quite as scary'. Or at least not for us.
