Highest number of guesses for a long time. 2 phenomenally useless hints.

Help!!! Can somebody explain the ???? words to me please. I have a ???? word with a similarity of 80.31 which is higher than the nearest word is supposed to be. I've tried capitals and hyphens but I just don't understand what the stupid game wants.

BIWI · 26/04/2022 21:05

@User12398712 This is from the semantle site:

The "Getting close" indicator tells you how close you are --if your word is one of the 1,000 nearest normal words to the target word, the rank will be given (1000 is the target word itself). If your word is not one of the nearest 1000, you're "cold". (By "normal" words", I mean non-capitalized words that appears in a very large English word list; there are lots of capitalized, misspelled, or obscure words that might be close but that won't get a ranking. Those get marked with "????")

User12398712 · 26/04/2022 21:11

@BIWI I don't really understand what their explanation means though. I had a question mark yesterday for dalmation (I was going down a dead end dog-related route!) and when I tried Dalmation instead, it liked it, so I assumed it was just in their dictionary with a capital. I can't see any way (that I haven't tried already) that I can change my word to make it fit their dictionary but it is so close, I really think it is the right word, just wrong somehow.

MysweetAudrina · 26/04/2022 21:16

I solved Semantle #87 in 71 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 2.89. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #27. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 62.51 (997/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

User12398712 · 26/04/2022 21:16

Got the answer. Still puzzled about the question marks though!

InMySpareTime · 26/04/2022 21:17

@User12398712 it's spelled "Dalmatian", so that's probably why you got the ???? For dalmation

Maybe you spelled it (or it got autocorrected to) Dalmatian the second time?

RedDiamond · 26/04/2022 21:21

Do you not find it very frustrating? I have had a quick look. To me it seems as if I have to guess just any old word and then try another and another and another. I don't understand the percentages. Is a high percentage good? Or a low one excellent? And does it mean that I have to guess a word that describes something? How do you know what they are describing? OHHHH! So painful!

semantlename · 26/04/2022 21:23

I'm worried about going off on a tangent now. Not sure if a word that's fitting the clues above 😣

I think you're on the right lines.

semantlename · 26/04/2022 21:37

I really can't think of any other words for 997 that make sense in the clues given. I'm sure I've used everything similar I can think of.

Thanks @squirrelnutkins1 didn't even have to open the message, that was nice and easy!! I didn't consider that a synonym or to fit in some of the clues so would have probably missed it! Completely overlooked

Thanks again, I can sleep now 😅

I’m going nowhere fast today! Two hints and had to Google the second one, had no idea what it was let alone how it could be helpful.

ThePontiacBandit · 26/04/2022 22:32

Well I got it…although the right word came as a surprise, I expected it to be more of a stepping stone! Once again the hints were useless - 626 and 813?! - and the answer came from following a lead on here.

I solved Semantle #87 in 153 guesses with 1 hint. My first guess had a similarity of 17.47. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #67. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 22.73. semantle.novalis.org/

I solved Semantle #88 in 47 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 18.35. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #35. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 24.93. semantle.novalis.org/

jumblehigher · 27/04/2022 01:15

Another obscure route 😅 this time slowly climbing up the greens…

I solved Semantle #88 in 92 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of -2.16. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #24. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 26.02 (150/1000). semantle.novalis.org/
