Karen

The use of Karen as an insult isn't going away is it?
I'm fed up. I feel silenced. I can't stand up to the insult without being accused of acting "like one" and being shut down.
It's everywhere and I hate it.

@Why2why

“ They're using it as a slur to shut women up, and only women.”

Which women, may I ask? I’ve never heard it use to shut “women” up. I’ve only ever heard it used to call out certain white women and their crap. Most white wines are not called Karens and most are not afraid to speak up and be assertive when they need to be.

The only ones who feel they are being made to shut up and the very ones that need to shut up and stop harassing innocent people with their nonsense.

I've heard it in a shop. The shop was 5 mins from closing and woman was trying to get in. I was paying and the young people behind the counter were laughing between them and making jokes about 'Karen is at the door' etc etc So it is used. Just because you have not heard it being used it does not mean it hasn't.

I can’t get worked up by the use of the name Karen when Karens of this world continue to destroy lives because they feel entitled to

seriously? You do realise that there are lots of women of a certain age called Karen and they do just the opposite of destroy lives, in fact they are coming into the demographic of being carers - for grandkids and their aged parents.

And as a pp said, it is not about racism in the UK, it is about women over 45 being told to shut up because they express an opinion, any opinion. In the case of the photocopying I would have told them to apologise and taken things further if they hadn't (assuming there was an HR dept).

Phyllis321 · 14/04/2022 17:17

Yesterday I posted a comment on YouTube about the use of Karen in a video title and I've already had dozens of rude/incredulous/dismissive replies.

MorrisZapp · 14/04/2022 17:20

Destroy lives wtf??

minimo15 · 14/04/2022 17:58

I'm a Karen & it really pisses me off

HRTQueen · 14/04/2022 20:05

I’ve heard it used here in the uk to call out racist behaviour that had been underhand

So it can’t be said it isn’t used in that way here

I've heard women called slappers, whores and sluts by people who claim it's not sexist because they "really were" slappers, whores and sluts.

What's your point? Thick misogynists like trying to lend a sense of righteousness to their thick misogyny?

Find another word.

HRTQueen · 14/04/2022 22:54

The term has that meaning to you

It doesn’t for everyone

I’m not going to tell people what terms they should be using when they have been subjected to racism but others might feel it’s their place to

DrSbaitso · 15/04/2022 06:37

Words have meanings. If you want to call out racism, use a word that means "racism". Don't weaponise misogyny, act as though black women never get called Karens and pretend a loser incel was actually some sort of social progressive. I get "entitled Karen" shit on my feeds all the time and never once have they been a righteous anti-racism campaign, but they've all been misogynistic and they've all been offensive to anyone named Karen.

It's not a noble, powerful word. It's go-to thick misogyny and the anti-racism is a recent add-on to try to keep it going with an air of respectability when it started losing force because it's just go-to thick misogyny. In that way, it's also just an exploitation of racism as a veil of righteousness for its true purpose. Nothing to be proud of.

ginandbearit · 15/04/2022 07:17

Etsy sellers can now go to.a website called 'Karen check' to see the reviews left by difficult customers .

HRTQueen · 15/04/2022 08:27

Call out racism oh yes like it’s never denied. As I said before I’ve known it be used with underhand racism

Like I said in previous post if someone has been subjected to racism and uses the term Karen towards the racist woman who am I to tell them not to use the term

But if you feel it’s your place to tell someone that they are thick for using the term go ahead

Sittininafield · 15/04/2022 08:40

I hate the term - misogynistic and ageist with a bit of classism thrown in too. Interesting reading about the origins. I’d never heard the term Karen haircut before and this www.curlcentric.com/what-is-a-karen-haircut/ was the first website that google showed me. Horrible, so ageist.

I will, thank you. What, you thought it was the mark of a Shakespearean master of insult who cuts Ks in the clothes of their opponents with nothing but the sharpness of their tongues?

It's a shit, thick, lazy and misogynistic insult. Don't blame me. I didn't invent it and I'm not desperately trying to defend it. Racist pissants are fine using Karen to try to shut down black women. Did you think they were noble and discerning about it?

Like I said, the supposed anti-racism is a recent addition to try to legitimise it, as you are doing now. As a woman, I can absolutely "call out" misogyny, and I will sure as fuck do it when it's exploiting racism to pretend it's OK. Amazing how there is always a way to legitimise misogyny in society, and even suggest a person is bad for opposing it.

HRTQueen · 15/04/2022 09:14

Shakespearian master of insult what are you on about

What am I thinking I’m thinking still people are having to deal with racism that’s what I’m thinking

Again that is how you view the term not how everyone does so if someone has been subjected to racism by a white woman and calls her a Karen I really don’t really care as the issue is the racism

I don’t use the word, I’ve heard it used once in person by my friends son at her we laughed, I’ve seen it used on Twitter but seems to have passed I don’t get that het up about it

HRTQueen · 15/04/2022 09:19

*Shakespearean

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/04/2022 09:35

Just the same in which they called a disabled person a disableist slur, or a gay person. You don't fight racism with misogyny. Just for eg if Asian men are misogynistic to me in a particular way it's not fair to single out their race, it's racist. Hope that helps.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/04/2022 09:36

*some Asian men, not all of them. Like not all white women are racist.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/04/2022 09:37

You were offended that I suggested it's a thick term used by thick people. The implication is that you think it's an intelligent term used by intelligent people.

It's not. It's a thick, lazy, misogynistic, ageist slur and the fact that some people are now desperately trying to keep it in vogue by repurposing it as a tool in a virtuous anti-racism campaign changes none of that. It just shows that there's nothing some people won't exploit to legitimise thick, lazy, ageist misogyny.

Perhaps you think thick, lazy, ageist misogyny will rid the world of racism. I don't. If someone's a racist, find a word that actually means racist and can communicate why that's bad without resorting thick, lazy, ageist misogyny.

DrSbaitso · 15/04/2022 09:43

And if you don't get het up about Karen, I can't see why you'd be getting het up about me disparaging people who use it. It's not a big deal, right?

Tabitha789 · 15/04/2022 09:44

I don't mind it! I get how it can be used unfairly. However, after working in retail for 15+ years. It's nice to see women being called out for there disgusting and abusive behaviour. So many people kick off because they can't get there own way when they are in the wrong.

DropYourSword · 15/04/2022 09:44

The fuck difference does it matter if someone calls you a Karen rather than a twat, a cunt, a prick, a moron etc.
Either you've acted like a twat and are being called out on it, or you haven't and the person using the insult is the one being a twat.
I absolutely don't get all the handwringing about 'Karen'!

"Central Park Karen" has a name big hint it's not actually Karen since when should we not name our enemy? It's not like we live in the fucking wizarding world with he shall not be named

MrFsAunt · 15/04/2022 09:47

Actually OP I DO think it's going away.

Some of my work means scanning the socials and I'm seeing it less and less.

I think it'll date, like the 'chads' & the 'Sharons & Traceys/Kevins' of old.
