All the students at work, told me that if you see a yellow car you pretend punch someone. And say yellow car no returns. I've never heard of it.

Australia here - my kids would shout Spotto and punch each other when they saw a yellow car.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 05/04/2022 09:06

I'm in the midlands and it was a thing when I was little. More common was mini punch no return. When your saw a mini. And it wasn't pretend!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 05/04/2022 09:08

why would you want a yellow car?

I love my yellow car. It's a happy car & it makes me smile every time I look at it Grin

BlueSpottedGiraffe · 05/04/2022 09:11

There was another thread recently about the different rules people had for the game

isittheholidaysyet · 05/04/2022 09:15

Yes. I'm from the east Midlands and did this growing up.
I have introduced it to my children.

Proper punches obvs. unless you are punching the driver.

So many yellow cars on the roads these days though. We can get 5 or 6 on our 10 min school run.
Also, if you are buying (Or making) a yellow car can we have proper yellow please.
No orangey-yellows or greeny-yellows or browny-yellows or gold, it just causes arguments.

PenguindreamsofDraco · 05/04/2022 09:17

When you see a yellow car you say "yellow car". That is the only rule of Yellow Car.

Quackpot · 05/04/2022 09:19

Yeah it's a real punch, harder the better. My arm was black and blue growing up 🤣. I tell my kids just to shout it.

TenoringBehind · 05/04/2022 09:25

Oh gosh yes, couldn’t agree more about proper yellow. We have so many arguments about gold: closer to yellow than any other colour but not really yellow.

We have complicated sub rules about parked cars. Yellow cars belonging to neighbours that we drive by several times a day are excluded. We can’t agree on whether or not to include them if we spot them out and about. Parked cars that are in the same spot for 3 or more days are excluded.

sillysmiles · 05/04/2022 09:27

I'm in Ireland and here it's often yellow reg i.e. northern Irish or UK reg cars

Runningupthecurtains · 05/04/2022 09:28

@PenguindreamsofDraco

When you see a yellow car you say "yellow car". That is the only rule of Yellow Car.
The other rule is you are always playing yellow car. 💛 🚗
RustyShackleford3 · 05/04/2022 09:28

You don't pretend to punch them in the arm, you actually punch them in the arm.

JenniferBarkley · 05/04/2022 09:35

I'd forgotten this! Punch buggy red on seeing a VW beetle here, although I think it was more a thing for my cousins than us. Happy memories Grin

ReiltinDubh · 05/04/2022 09:35

Also in Ireland and we did yellow reg too. Haven't thought about that for years Grin I don't know if kids still do it I've never done with my dc.

Chishnfips · 05/04/2022 09:43

If you see a citroen 2cv you'd say 'punch buggy' and the colour of that car which was usually red and then punch person next to you. Don't see many 2cv around these days so it shows how old that is.

MysteriousMonkey · 05/04/2022 09:46

Here it's minis too, a punch for a yellow car, a punch for a mini, and if its a yellow mini then 10 punches!

Dundonian · 05/04/2022 09:49

Never heard of it!

Cas112 · 05/04/2022 09:50

You dont pretend ahaha

WeirdlyKind · 05/04/2022 09:50

@Cornettoninja

Definitely a thing. We still play it!

I really want a yellow car to be able to drive around knowing that I’m enabling the continuing this fine tradition of children thumping one another on car journeys Grin

I have one and it's hilarious to watch people at times. 😁🤣
TheVanguardSix · 05/04/2022 09:52

This is what I think of when I see a yellow car... Grin

MirandaWest · 05/04/2022 09:56

We play yellow car. Only time I was any better than DS was when he was learning to drive and so was concentrating rather harder on not crashing than spotting yellow cars.

Back to normal once he'd passed.

We have rules about lorries with yellow on them - it has to be the driving part ie the cab. You can't have a yellow trailer unless it also has a yellow cab.

dollydimple123 · 05/04/2022 09:57

Yes it's a thing! Remember sitting on the school bus and dreading seeing a yellow car as you knew you'd be getting a dig!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/04/2022 09:57

We were playing this in the back of our parents’ sludge brown car in the 1980s, if not 1970s. We were in the south of England.

There’s also the Inbetweeners “bus w*nkers” variation.

gerryperry · 05/04/2022 10:00

I've never heard of this. I used to have a yellow car...Im now wondering how many people were punched while I was tootling completely oblivious.

Can't say I enjoyed having a yellow car anyway, I was definitely stared at a fair few times....it wasn't cool

Cornettoninja · 05/04/2022 10:01

@WeirdlyKind you are indeed doing gods work Grin

Toddlerteaplease · 05/04/2022 10:41

I'm in the East Midlands and today has been a school day. And there are two yellow cars in the car park!
