Semantle episode 3

Somehow we've almost filled 2 threads already so here is thread 3. I still need a distraction from the news, and Semantle certainly fits the bill.

To understand what I'm on about followthis link. It's a word game like Wordle in that you need to find the secret word of the day, but it works by semantics. So you input a word and it will tell you how close you are. You have infinite guesses.

For example, one of the secret words was 'costly' with expensive, cumbersome and burdensome being the three closest words.

I solved Semantle #38 in 141 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 2.71. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #23. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 0.48. semantle.novalis.org/

I mean 0.48 similarity. What the hell?!

Oh my word! Was getting nowhere even with some helpful hints (for which thank you as I think once they’d percolated they did the trick!) then just sat in a 2 hour teams meeting, the second I hung up it just popped into my head!

I’d already guessed about 5 more obscure versions of the target word, but not the one itself.

I solved Semantle #38 in 266 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 8.00. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #40. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 12.63. semantle.novalis.org/

I can’t get my head round this game at all. It makes no sense! Why do different versions of the word (travel/travelled) have such vastly different scores? I don’t get it 🤦‍♀️
