Best shop bought chocolate cake?

I normally make birthday cakes but I've got a massively busy week at work and I just don't think I'm going to have time before Saturday.

Any recommendations? It's got to be chocolate and is for a teenager (so not a character).

We have all major supermarkets plus M&S nearby

Have you got a local cafe that sells homemade cakes? They might sell you one, it will probably taste miles better than any shop one.

Whitefire · 07/03/2022 19:11

The tray bake ones usually go down ok. They're teenagers I'm sure they'll be happy with anything.

I like the Galaxy cake, I have bought it at Tesco.

The Betty's one looks gorgeous but it has an apricot jam filling. :(

And the only cake konditor deliver nationally is simnel cake 🤮

My favourite is the M&S chocolate one with the tiny white and milk chocolate stars all over it. Super gooey and chocolatey!
Agree. It's the best. I buy it even when it's not a birthday as it's so delicious!
Staryflight445 · 07/03/2022 19:21

The M&S one that has stars on it.
It is amazing. Morrisons do a similar looking one but it’s not as chocolaty and also doesn’t last as long once opened.

Turmerictolly · 07/03/2022 19:23

M n S chocolate fudge cake is delicious - not too sickly sweet and tasty warm or cold.

Sainsburys triple layer chocolate cake

Agree with PP, to find a local cake maker. Will taste much better.

Another vote for Colin! I had him for my 18th Grin

Clymene · 07/03/2022 19:53

I shall see if I can get the M&S stars one. Thanks for the multiple votes of support! Smile I think I've had it before - the little stars sound familiar.

If it doesn't have to solely be a chocolate cake, the Waitrose Millionaire Layer Cake is delicious.

M&S’s extremely chocolatey birthday cake. Bought it for DS’s party yesterday and we had the spare slices, delicious.

wagnbobble · 07/03/2022 20:32

M&S Rainbow cake with vanilla outside with sprinkles - even for big birthdays (18th and 21st) my "kids" beg for this.

ButEmilylovedhim · 07/03/2022 20:33

The Tesco finest chocolate cake is lovely and not expensive. Chocolate cake is normally disappointing or chemical tasting but this isn’t. Also very moist with good chocolate curls on top.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 07/03/2022 20:33

If you want to pass it off as your own you’re in with the Cook ! One, and it’s pretty chocolatey :)

Sainsburys Triple Chocolate Layer cake is very good - better even than the Waitrose version.

Meredusoleil · 07/03/2022 20:35

Have you got a branch of Cake Box near you? Since we've been ordering our cakes from them, we can't eat the regular supermarket ones as they taste too sickly sweet with all the icing on top.

All the Cake Box cakes are egg free and so light and fluffy, with buttercream rather than frosting. You feel like you could eat the whole thing in one go. Not cheap though.

AmberRoseGold · 07/03/2022 20:38

I gave a friend a year of Meg Rivers cakes as a 30th birthday gift. She said their chocolate cake was excellent. But I think what I would do is order a load of brownies- lots of local bakeries seem to make them for delivery near me, it seems to be a lockdown thing that has carried on. You could stack and sprinkle and put on sparklers? I think bought brownies are nicer than supermarket cakes. And I say that as a big fan of cakes.

wowsaidtheowl · 07/03/2022 20:40

Lola’s chocolate cakes are delicious!

Ff10n · 07/03/2022 20:44

The no1 Chocolate Indulgence one from Waitrose is pretty darn good - I'm not really a chocolate cake fan but I like this one. Only £5.50 so you could jazz it up a bit with some decorations.

This one.
It's the 'extremely chocolately' birthday cake and it's the only shop bought chocolate birthday cake I will eat

^I came on to say this M&S cake too

UnUdderOne · 07/03/2022 20:46

Waittose are less unpleasant than most bought cakes.
