Best shop bought chocolate cake?

I normally make birthday cakes but I've got a massively busy week at work and I just don't think I'm going to have time before Saturday.

Any recommendations? It's got to be chocolate and is for a teenager (so not a character).

We have all major supermarkets plus M&S nearby

I've yet to meet a teenager who doesn't like Colin the Caterpillar.

Costco. Not their Birthday Cake range, but their regular sticky chocolatey creamy things. Have to be a member though.

Grin I did think of that but I don't want him to worry that his friends will think it's babyish. If the love for Colin transcends that, I'd be delighted!

Morrisons triple chocolate cake used to be good but not bought one recently - was about £10. Lidl chocolate cake (£3.99) was surprisingly ok, but sweet

dementedpixie · 07/03/2022 18:43

I dont rate Colin the caterpillar at all tbh. I prefer ganache rather than hard chocolate on my cake. A slice of any of them heated with some cream poured on is delicious.

Brideandprejudice · 07/03/2022 18:43

I second the large chocolate cake from Costco, it's divine

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 07/03/2022 18:43

Go all Liz from motherland and make a Colin the caterpillar "Human centipede " by sticking a few together. Should take the babyish vibe away . 😃

Pugfostermum · 07/03/2022 18:43

My favourite is the M&S chocolate one with the tiny white and milk chocolate stars all over it. Super gooey and chocolatey!

dementedpixie · 07/03/2022 18:46

We often just buy the own make chocolate party cake from tesco or asda.

Dilbertian · 07/03/2022 18:46

Costco. 100%.

And you can get them some mega-muffins, some deep fried jalapeños stuffed with mozzarella, and Chicago hotdogs at the same time. Teenager food heaven.

LaurieFairyCake · 07/03/2022 18:50

They're all horrid - I've never tasted a nice one

The only one I like is the Gail's chocolate loaf cake - it tastes home made

The Betty's one is nice too

Clymene · 07/03/2022 18:51

Unfortunately my nearest Costco is nearly 2 hours away so that's a non starter.

I have also not enjoyed Colin but I don't care if I don't like it. I was hoping also for something I might pass off as homemade Blush

Colin. My DC had them for their 18ths, so as not to break the tradition...

Get a plain one and add more decorations/sweets.

This one. It's the 'extremely chocolately' birthday cake and it's the only shop bought chocolate birthday cake I will eat
NoSquirrels · 07/03/2022 18:55

Any vaguely bog standard chocolate ‘party’ cake. Add chocolate fingers or kitkats round the edge, sticking up slightly so they form a ring and the top of the cake is lower. Add a shit ton of maltesers in the middle. Job done. Never fails.

I'm happy to do that. I'd just like the base cake to taste nice and not all artificial

Konidtor do the most delicious cakes. I’m fairly sure they deliver.

bairnk · 07/03/2022 19:03

Another vote for the extremely chocolatey M and S one- so, so good!!

Not cheap, but I like the M&S milk, dark and white layer cake. You have to pre-order though.

TroysMammy · 07/03/2022 19:06

Co-op but it's not very big.

ronjobbins · 07/03/2022 19:06

Bettys by post

Scarby9 · 07/03/2022 19:06

My godson had a full Colin diorama for his wedding cake, so not too babyish, but I agree the actual cake taste is nothing to write home about.
