Semantle Chapter 2

Since the madness of our love/hate affair with Semantle is continuing, I thought I start a second thread. Why worry about the goings on in the world when you can pull your hair out over vocabulary?

To umderstand what I'm on about follow this link. It's a word game like Wordle in that you need to find the secret word of the day, but it works by semantics. So you input a word and it will tell you how close you are. You have infinite guesses.

For example, one of the secret words was 'costly' with expensive, cumbersome and burdensome being the three closest words.

If you want to see how we've been getting on up to now, thread one is here.

Enjoy, and don't shoot the messenger when you get nothing else done all day!!!

998!!

EdwinsActsOfKindness · 08/03/2022 09:55

Is 943 similar to 946? (I have 946 but not 943!)

InMySpareTime · 08/03/2022 10:00

How can this be a simple word that apparently has nothing to do with most of its hundred most similar words?
I'm over 500 guesses now and getting frustrated. I'm on the app so can't DM, is there really no way to post a clue, even as much as whether it's a thing, an action or a concept?

BowerOfBramble · 08/03/2022 10:00

I can’t PM but I’d love 943 @RoxieLoxy

InMySpareTime · 08/03/2022 10:06

I now have 946, 965 and 969. I'm beginning to dislike today's word.

InMySpareTime · 08/03/2022 10:09

Ah, found 943, but it's not helping yet...

ErrolTheDragon · 08/03/2022 10:11

I've got 943 but can't think of anything else related to that at the moment that's either cold or in a similar range. My highest at the moment is 969.

MadisonAvenue · 08/03/2022 10:12

I’d gone straight from 879 to 962 so don’t have any idea what the nearest words are hinting at.

InMySpareTime · 08/03/2022 10:15

Fkin hell that was a slog! I don't know how they decided the closest words but they are not helpful today.

I solved Semantle #38 in 577 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 9.34. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #69. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 58.56 (998/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

ErrolTheDragon · 08/03/2022 10:21

962 was the first high rank I had but I feel like I've tried the options from that too. Argh.

SouperNoodle · 08/03/2022 10:21

499/1000
Any help please?

InMySpareTime · 08/03/2022 10:31

499 has nothing much to do with the word. Might as well look out of the window and randomly guess until you hit the word accidentally (it's not really a word you can find by getting closer and closer words, in that sense it was a poor choice as a target word)

ErrolTheDragon · 08/03/2022 10:35

Got it! It was a longer (though not obscure) word than I was expecting from some of the previous comments. Looking out of my window was helpful.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/03/2022 10:36

I solved Semantle #38 in 178 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 12.52. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #18. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 58.56 (998/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

ErrolTheDragon · 08/03/2022 10:36

That's wrong, my penultimate guess was 999

picklemewalnuts · 08/03/2022 10:37

Whose after a number based hint? I can't do PMs.

picklemewalnuts · 08/03/2022 10:39

Souper, if it's any help, your word plus the target word makes me think about centerparcs. Neither word is bum, or sex, for those wondering. Grin

Will any of the ones I've got help me guess? I've been looking out the window trying to find something I haven't already thought of

You've got some good words there, SpareTime.

They are a bit too static though.

499? I've never been to centreparcs but that surprises me!
picklemewalnuts · 08/03/2022 10:45

Absolutely, Errol! At least the Sherwood Forest one. Highlight of the holiday, turning the corner, driving in.... mind, it got a bit frantic as you checked in, but again after that....

picklemewalnuts · 08/03/2022 10:46

Right, Darmar, you've got all the airy fairy words associated with it. Think a bit more mundane/practical/concrete, if you will.

I d have said something more general, less specific
picklemewalnuts · 08/03/2022 11:00

What's really interesting about this, now we're away from all the sport related words of the last few days, is how amorphous words can be- context dependent, variable, fascinating!

I've solved today's already but am now working through this trying to find word 499. I've never been to Center Parcs though...
