Semantle Chapter 2

Since the madness of our love/hate affair with Semantle is continuing, I thought I start a second thread. Why worry about the goings on in the world when you can pull your hair out over vocabulary?

To umderstand what I'm on about follow this link. It's a word game like Wordle in that you need to find the secret word of the day, but it works by semantics. So you input a word and it will tell you how close you are. You have infinite guesses.

For example, one of the secret words was 'costly' with expensive, cumbersome and burdensome being the three closest words.

If you want to see how we've been getting on up to now, thread one is here.

Enjoy, and don't shoot the messenger when you get nothing else done all day!!!

@InMySpareTime

The guy I mentioned in 945's context is often pictured on a kind of box.
Thank you! It’s obvious now!

I solved Semantle #36 in 178 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 21.23 (472/1000).My penultimate guess had a similarity of 6.91. semantle.novalis.org/

Having given up the last 2 days (> 20 minutes, > 150 guesses) I just got today's in 34 & about 5 minutes. Hmmm....

One thing I am figuring out is that words that seem similar to me aren't similar in Semantle. Like in today's puzzle, "different" & "difference" aren't scoring about the same (or as close as I would expect to the final word). I may find more persistence for this after all...

Hasselhoffsheadband · 06/03/2022 16:19

Got it, phew!

It's always a word I'm just taking a punt at by the time I get to it!

Polgara2 · 06/03/2022 16:44

Ofgs I can't believe it took me so long to get that! See clues make so much sense when you know the answer 😂

BertieBotts · 06/03/2022 16:47

What was the theme of number 31? As in how far did you get? I can remember the previous answers but not on which day they occurred.

It's really hard to do clues for today's!

JaneJeffer · 06/03/2022 17:07

I solved Semantle #36 in 91 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of -6.09. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #34. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 52.26 (995/1000). semantle.novalis.org/
Thanks @picklemewalnuts that really helped

Heronatemygoldfish · 06/03/2022 17:14

Oh great, I'm now stuck on 955...

Coffeekam · 06/03/2022 17:15

@Heronatemygoldfish

I wouldn't dwell on that one, to be honest!

It has a connection, but via quite a specific context I'd say.

Heronatemygoldfish · 06/03/2022 17:46

I solved Semantle #36 in 230 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 15.69. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #34. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 28.05 (908/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

I'm getting worse every day!

BettyBootsie · 06/03/2022 18:05

I'm 200 tries in and have one green. #22. Could someone dm me a clue, please?

OP posts:
SlightlyJaded · 06/03/2022 18:11

Also need a clue. Something in the 960/970 range if possible...

InMySpareTime · 06/03/2022 18:22

@SlightlyJaded four people who might have their name in an envelope and win a face trophy.

AllTheYoungGoodyTwoShoes · 06/03/2022 18:25

What was yesterday's answer please. Please can someone PM me.

picklemewalnuts · 06/03/2022 18:26

Sorry elegantly, I can't pm.

A low green word at 185 might be helpful.
Can I just say it here, or is that too much to give away?

BertieBotts · 06/03/2022 18:27

Yesterday's answer was bat.

22 is very far away... no idea how that is linked, sorry!

picklemewalnuts · 06/03/2022 18:36

No 22 is in relation to tennis I think.

AllTheYoungGoodyTwoShoes · 06/03/2022 19:04

Thank you. I take it there was a cricket connection.

Not to worry, I've had a couple of dms (and I don't like clues on the thread). But thank you.

Tennis?? I'm clueless but then I never did like sport :o

Yes defo a cricket theme yesterday. But baseball was more dominant.

WildImaginings · 06/03/2022 20:52

Finally, 189 guesses later! It took me ages to hit green today and then when I got there I was beating around the bush for ages!

ElegantlyTouched · 06/03/2022 22:02

I solved Semantle #36 in 352 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of -1.78. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #52. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 20.42 (317/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

I gave up today. I still can’t see the connection between most of the word list.

I think this is more frustrating than rewarding unfortunately.

Alwaystired99 · 06/03/2022 22:29

292 attempts, ha ha ha! Only my second go so quite pleased though. @InMySpareTime 's box clue makes sooo much sense now.
This is such a weird game but oddly addictive.
