Since the madness of our love/hate affair with Semantle is continuing, I thought I start a second thread. Why worry about the goings on in the world when you can pull your hair out over vocabulary?

To umderstand what I'm on about follow this link. It's a word game like Wordle in that you need to find the secret word of the day, but it works by semantics. So you input a word and it will tell you how close you are. You have infinite guesses.

For example, one of the secret words was 'costly' with expensive, cumbersome and burdensome being the three closest words.

I solved Semantle #36 in 34 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 6.90. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #3. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 8.11. semantle.novalis.org/

34 guesses Doubt I’ll ever top that Sheer fluke though, no particular skill involved.

Got it in 81! Completely at random, I might add. My best guess was 762, then I was just trying to think of words associated with that.

Oh good, a new day. So now I can openly moan about how ‘sport’ wasn’t a green word yesterday!

I’m currently on 918 for today's and have run out of ideas 😬

Likewise, that 'mammal' wasn't green but 'bird' and various types of bird were middling green hits. 'Fly' wasn't green either. An American even vaguely into sport would have got that more easily than a Brit who isn't for sure! Note if you try the archive site - it only takes American spellings.

Todays is battering me!! I've been going through random words without any luck and then got 800/1000 but no similar words are anything above a 3 🤦‍♀️ heelllpppp

‘Wing’ wasn’t green! Or even ‘vampire’!!!

But ‘atlatl’ is apparently more similar. Honestly I think all those birds and animals were only on the list as baseball team names, not because a bat is also an animal.

How does this game even work? I’ve read the info on the semantle page but honestly that doesn’t really explain it, it kinda assumes you understand something about computery/data stuff that I clearly don’t.

(Made me laugh that “pipistrelle” was on the word list yesterday…..if you haven’t already guessed “bat” you’re not going to get to “pipistrelle”!!!)

I was getting super close with words like machete and blade. It was all weapons focussed for me.

2 days in a row where it took fewer than 100 guesses. Daren’t quite jinx it and say I’m on a roll though!

I'm echoing all the yesterday frustration! I started with thumb finger pinky etc.

Then moved on to weapon words via fist and punch.

Lucked on to baseball/basketball or something, but then the only baseball words I knew didn't get green- diamond, for example.

Madness.

I've got 4 guesses in the 99x's and I still can't get it...

OMG got there finally in 227

I guessed ‘toad’ yesterday and got green 564, which was my highest answer. I then tried a few toad related answers which were all either low green or cold. Then decided I would go with toad in the hole and tried batter which took me straight to 944. I couldn’t work out how there could possibly be 380 toad in the hole related words!

I of course then wasted numerous guesses on food related items and then moved on to violence related words

I can't get past 967.

A completely reversal of yesterday, where I had hundreds of guesses and eventually gave up!
