Gin recommendations please

I want to buy a friend a bottle of gin for a present, and I suspect MN is a good place to ask for recommendations.

Roku Japanese gin and Hendricks seem to have good reviews. Are these any good, or is there something more special out there. Budget £30, or there about.

Cheers Smile

Brockmans and tanqueray no.10 are lovely, both with a citrus edge and delicious.

RampantIvy · 01/03/2022 22:11

@TimeforaGandT

A shout out for York gin: yorkgin.com/all-york-gin-products/ You can get a variety pack of their different types for £30. Otherwise Old Tom is very good …..
Yes!
LightsoftheNorth · 01/03/2022 22:12

Yes to Brockmans, it is a very smooth gin, a good one to give as a gift. Personally I'd steer clear of flavoured gins.

Carounn
Brockmans
Tanqueray 10 and orange

Avoid
Arran

Personally I would avoid flavoured Gin unless you know your friend loves them.

fortunenookie · 01/03/2022 22:17

Rock Rose gin is delightful

17CherryTreeLane · 01/03/2022 22:18

Already mentioned, but my favourites are Tanqueray 10, Silent Pool, and Harris Gin.

LightsoftheNorth · 01/03/2022 22:19

Botanist is another good idea - lovely and clean tasting with an interesting bottle.

paddler78 · 01/03/2022 22:25

Pretty much anything from cvdistillery.co.uk/ the flavoured ones are great but we love the navy one

CthulhuInDisguise · 01/03/2022 22:27

Beerblefish Hopped Gin is beautiful.

CthulhuInDisguise · 01/03/2022 22:29

@WarmSausageTea

Drumshambo is lovely, as is Twisted Nose.

Depending on you and your friend’s sense of humour, Death’s Door?

When my DH was diagnosed as terminal, he bought me a bottle of Deaths Door - he had a great sense of humour Grin
Costacoffeeplease · 01/03/2022 22:30

Tarquins, or if you can source it Sharish or Lisboa

@buckeejit

Placemarking, I'm in the craft gin club & love it, (though never use the cocktail syrup). Looking for any recommendations of slimline tonic that isn't too sweet please?
I like Waitrose Essentials slimline tonic. It has the right level of fizz (for me), and a good flavour. Plus it's in cans of 200ml, which I like. I'm not a fan of Fever Tree, and I've tried all the own label ones - nothing compares to Waitrose for me.
acatcalledjohn · 01/03/2022 22:37

It depends entirely on your friend's tastes. Lots of people love Opihr, I hate it.

Chalkstream Gold from the River Test Distillery is divine.

Caorunn
Kirkjuvagr
Sabatini

Roku/Mare/Brockmans are great gins suggested upthread and, along with Caorunn, available in supermarkets.

Goodbyecustardtart · 01/03/2022 22:47

Whitby gin, the Botanist, yes to Chalkstream Gold. Do you know any of her favourites? Or is there a place which has significance for her? There are so many gin distilleries now you’d be bound to find one local to anywhere special to her.

KateLumley · 01/03/2022 22:49

I was aware of the MN obsession liking for gin, but this is ridiculous. I think I will make a spreadsheet, collating all the information on this thread, and go from there...Grin

I’d go for The Botanist gin. If your friend is a gin fan then I’d stay away from flavoured gins or any gimmicks which to be honest is most gins now!

wlv12 · 01/03/2022 23:05

Cotswolds gin is divine. I love it.

For a flavoured gin, I love Verano watermelon gin which is around £20 and lovely in the spring/summer.

Justkeeppedaling · 01/03/2022 23:08

I love Roku gin and Gunshot gin

DartmoorChef · 01/03/2022 23:10

Whitley Neil do some lovely flavours.

My favourites are raspberry or mango and lime

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/03/2022 23:11

Renegade Gin from Doghouse Distillery is the best I’ve tasted.

hellcatspangle · 01/03/2022 23:14

I really like Delhi gin. It's about £30 on Amazon.

jnoOLDIE · 01/03/2022 23:15

Jawbox is hard to beat!

BoatingDown · 01/03/2022 23:23

This is an amazing list

I love...

  • jawbox
  • drumshanbo
  • York gin (try the super strong!!)
  • roku

Is there anywhere to get a deal on gin? Just shop around the supermarkets?

Hocuspocusandfairies · 01/03/2022 23:39

Mermaid gin(blue bottle)It's a gin made on the Isle of Wight but John Lewis also sell it.
