Gin recommendations please

I want to buy a friend a bottle of gin for a present, and I suspect MN is a good place to ask for recommendations.

Roku Japanese gin and Hendricks seem to have good reviews. Are these any good, or is there something more special out there. Budget £30, or there about.

Cheers Smile

I would suggest you look at craft gin club. You can have a first box for £30 just remember to cancel the subscription!!! It is a lovely gift and they always have a decent gin in each box. I have given them as gifts when they have an offer on.

Twisted Nose comes in a lovely bottle too

Plymouth gin is really good, so smooth!

A little more expensive is Harris gin, gorgeous bottle too.

Thanks, I think I would prefer to just buy a bottle. Knowing me I would forget to cancel the subscription, also the boxes seem to have other stuff in and I just want to buy the gin.

Hendricks lunar gin is lovely and it's in a gorgeous bottle

gwilt · 01/03/2022 17:10
  1. Plymouth Gin. Generally about £20, delicious and smooth.
  2. Malfy Blood Orange. Got mine recently at Tesco for £16, usually about £28. Pink Grapefruit one also lovely.
  3. Bathtub Gin. Lovely packaging. About £30.
gwilt · 01/03/2022 17:11

@BuddhaForMary Good shout. Hendricks Lunar is also lovely and the bottle is great for a gift.

Malfys Pink Grapefruit

I saw the bathtub gin, but a put off by the name Grin

Thanks for the recommendations. I don't know where to start, as I can't stand the stuff.

I really like Gin Mare (it’s lively garnished with a few green olives and some rosemary). Also Harris Gin is quite nice and comes in a beautiful bottle.

Fleur405 · 01/03/2022 17:13

*lovely!

gingerhills · 01/03/2022 17:14

Elephant Gin is divine but has quite a distinctive different flavour. You can pick it up online for around £30 and it has a very pretty bottle.

Imo, the most perfect classic gin is Salcombe Gin but it's around £40 not £30.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 01/03/2022 17:14

My current face is Achroous from Electric Spirits. It's a very smooth, quite grown-up gin. Plus it comes in a fabulous almost luminous orange bottle!

Daffy's is also worth a shout -- avoid the trendy mulberry flavoured one though, just stick with the original.

MrsPnut · 01/03/2022 17:14

My very favourite gin is Puerto de Indias strawberry gin, www.amazon.co.uk/Puerto-Indias-Strawberry-Gin-70/dp/B00XA1OUKM?tag=mumsnetforu03-21
Otherwise for ordinary gin, Tanqueray or Caorunn are both lovely.

Whitney168 · 01/03/2022 17:14

Another vote for Twisted Nose, and also like Mermaid (original one, not weird fruity one).

mug2018 · 01/03/2022 17:16

The handmade gin company gins are gorgeous. The only use natural flavors & the quality is far superior than a 'commercial' / artificially flavored gin
A really good selection from them on Amazon - Tipsy Tortoise is really nice 😊

Tipsy Tortoise Gin - The Handmade Gin Company - Premium Craft Gin with apple, grapefruit and liquorice - 40% ABV 50cl https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0822PMTGC/ref=cmswwrcppapiglttiWA1A1R3BMWH8FF0DT016??encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Look at “Tarquins” it’s a Cornish distillery and they make in smallish batches but it’s soo good! And they do amazing flavours too!

RampantIvy · 01/03/2022 17:19

Before you start buying flavoured gin I would try and find out what kind of gin your friend likes.

Some people like flavoured gin. Some, like me, prefer the original juniper taste of gin and don't care for flavoured gins.

IMO some of the more trendy flavoured gins that have jumped on the gin bandwagon are for people who don't really like gin.

Hendricks is a good call, and widely available, so is Plymough gin. I also like Gordon's because it has a very pronounced juniper taste.

KateLumley · 01/03/2022 17:20

So gin isn't just gin flavoured then? This is proving challenging, especially as I have child controls on my internet, so can't open most of the links Grin

Tanquery Flor de Sevilla is a lovely orangey one. Nice bottle too. A bit different but not too weird and tastes very nice. Available most places.

MinglingFlamingo · 01/03/2022 17:24

Tarquins fan here

Recently got a bottle and some glasses and a gift bag. It was a deal they had. For a gift for someone for a reasonable price

Kilpitlees · 01/03/2022 17:31

Isle of Harris Gin, added bonus of a beautiful bottle.
