Gin recommendations please

I want to buy a friend a bottle of gin for a present, and I suspect MN is a good place to ask for recommendations.

Roku Japanese gin and Hendricks seem to have good reviews. Are these any good, or is there something more special out there. Budget £30, or there about.

Cheers Smile

Bombay sapphire is lovely clean tasting gin.

RampantIvy · 01/03/2022 17:34

Yes to Bombay Sapphire and Tanqueray gin. Only get orange flavoured gin if you know your friend will like it, and avoid the horror of pink gin.

ReviewingTheSituation · 01/03/2022 17:35

Definitely check whether she drinks flavoured gin before buying anything flavoured. I love gin, and usually have a few bottles on the go so I can choose what I fancy, but can't stand any of the flavoured ones.

Is there anything local to you? A small batch distiller maybe? Local farm shops might be a good place to look.

My favourite is Cotswold gin, but probably more than £30. It's a very gin-y gin, but has a lovely taste (and is quite distinctive in that it goes cloudy when you add tonic).

Adnam's Copper House is lovely, & should be within your budget.

Verite1 · 01/03/2022 17:39

This is lovely. Audemas pink pepper gin. not to be mistaken for pink gin which is horrible.

Bathtub gin us excellent.

buckeejit · 01/03/2022 17:49

Placemarking, I'm in the craft gin club & love it, (though never use the cocktail syrup). Looking for any recommendations of slimline tonic that isn't too sweet please?

Saucery · 01/03/2022 17:50

Persie, Cuckoo or Dyfi Distillery.

A shout out for York gin:

You can get a variety pack of their different types for £30. Otherwise Old Tom is very good …..

hels71 · 01/03/2022 17:56

My favourites are Tanqueray and Bombay Sapphire ( although I am always sad that it's only the bottle that is blue, not the gin!!)

fussychica · 01/03/2022 18:05

I'm not that keen on flavoured gins except Tanqueray Seville in the height of summer.

I like quite a lot of gins so I buy when they are on offer so get a £35 gin for £20-30. I like Silent Pool, Martin Miller, Tanqueray 10, No3, Caorunn. I don't like Gin Mare and think Monkey 47 which is very nice, isn't worth the money.
Happy drinking!

Oh yes Tarquins are offering free glasses and a nice gift bag when buying now! Even the “usual” gin is lovely.. they hand wrote on the bottles what the predominant flavours are and it’s handsigned by the maker. We use them in every place I’ve worked and it’s really great gin. Pretty bottles too!

ThatsALotOfPassionfruit · 01/03/2022 19:08

Harris gin, Norfolk gin or chase gin

Personally, despite being a gin fan I didn’t like Roku, it tasted too alcohol-y to me rather than gin-y

MimieD · 01/03/2022 19:16

The Botanist, Tangueray no 10 or Gin Mare are my personal favourites.

Drumshambo is lovely, as is Twisted Nose.

Depending on you and your friend’s sense of humour, Death’s Door?

If you're ever in the Padstow / Wadebridge area of Cornwall highly recommend their gin tour Grin
NaerDoWell · 01/03/2022 19:36

No 3 gin.

And I have tried A LOT of gin!

You can get it from Waitrose or Amazon.

Waitwhat23 · 01/03/2022 19:41

Fidra Gin - fidragin.com/ . Slightly more expensive at £39 but you can get 10% off and free delivery on the website. I also love The Botanist and Isle of Harris.

Agree that it might be a good idea to find out what kind of gin she likes - I like a clean, sharp gin and not a fan of very botanical gins. I like flavoured gins as long as they're not too sweet. It's very much up to personal taste.

Where is the offer with the free glasses? I can't find it.

Silent Pool is nice

I thought that was the worst gin I’ve ever tasted! 😂

I’ve currently got a bottle of the Lonewolf (BrewDog) cloudy lemon gin which is lovely. Their general one is nice and they do a gift set with a nice glass for £25. groceries.asda.com/product/spirits-gift-sets/lone-wolf-gin-gift-pack/1000170163633

woefulinsomniac · 01/03/2022 22:00

Silentpool do a nice selection of flavoured or a classic gin. I ended up purchasing a load at a show after trying all the gin stalls, I concluded they were my favourite.

ISmellBurnings · 01/03/2022 22:06

Bathtub gin is DH’s favourite.
