How do you pronounce...

Cher. As in Sonny and Cher.

Cher to rhyme with chair? (Share)
Or Cher to rhyme with fur? (Shur)

I've been arguing with my dad who was around at the beginning of her career and says she was introduced as Shur in the 60s. Confused

Cilla Black would have probably called her 'our Shur'.

Louisianagumbo · 26/02/2022 21:52

Share. But I agree about, ugh, Cilla - at least while she was playing up her accent.

SiobhanSharpe · 26/02/2022 21:53

It's short for Cherilyn, (thank you, Wiki) so it sounds like it should be pronounced 'Share'.
'Shurilyn' would be odd.

Is he from Lancashur or Yorkshur by any chance?

But totally agree Cilla Black would have said Shur.

LeftieLucy · 26/02/2022 22:04

I been saying it over and over both ways in my head and now I don’t know how I usually pronounce it Confused

JellybabyGina87 · 26/02/2022 22:04

Share and fur sound the same in my accent.

HundredMilesAnHour · 26/02/2022 22:06

@JellybabyGina87

Share and fur sound the same in my accent.
Me too. Feels like a trick question lol.
Irishmom7 · 26/02/2022 22:08

Chair, fur and Cher all sound totally different to me 😂

It's exactly like 'Chair' but with 'Sh' instead of 'Ch'.

So many people sit on a 'chur' and many sit on a 'chare'.

Many children (in Bolton) 'shur' their sweets and many children (in Basingstoke) 'share' them.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 26/02/2022 22:11

I have always pronounced it like the end of PreFER. With the eh sound.

Cottagepieandpeas · 26/02/2022 22:11

@Classica

Cilla Black would have probably called her 'our Shur'.
😂 definitely
GranolaHolmes · 26/02/2022 22:14

I'd say the Cher as sher in the same way I'd say sherbet or sherry.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 26/02/2022 22:14

You are all fab!Grin
My dad is London born and bred. I told him he sounded like Cilla too. I'm glad you all agree with me. Other than hearing it said a zillion times, I based my pronunciation on the main character from 'Clueless' being named after Cher.

These threads are so odd when you can’t do other accents - in my Scottish one it is none of your options, it is Sher, an eh sound!

FatFredsFriedEgg · 26/02/2022 22:16

In the same way I'd say sherbet or sherry.

So completely differently then?

dementedpixie · 26/02/2022 22:17

Neither of them

It would be Sher in my accent

Thatsplentyjack · 26/02/2022 22:17

@GranolaHolmes

I'd say the Cher as sher in the same way I'd say sherbet or sherry.
Me too. Are you Scottish?
HeadingForHome · 26/02/2022 22:17

Neither. It's sher. Eh. Like pp said eh like in prefer.

Share is shay r
Fur is fuh r
Cher is sheh r

They are all different! In my accent anyway
