How do you pronounce...

Cher. As in Sonny and Cher.

Cher to rhyme with chair? (Share)
Or Cher to rhyme with fur? (Shur)

I've been arguing with my dad who was around at the beginning of her career and says she was introduced as Shur in the 60s. Confused

@BeefSupreme

It's Sher, not Share.
for a lot of people those are the same sound.
Thursa · 27/02/2022 01:16

Sher

CailleachGranda · 27/02/2022 01:26

Sher. Like the start of sherry

sashh · 27/02/2022 02:04

Share, but I was at college with a girl who's sister was called Cher pronounced Shur - but she had a strong Blackburn accent.

Dinoteeth · 27/02/2022 02:08

I can see how people get Shur, as that's how people say her.

But I don't get how Sher can sound like share, as that has the same sound as hair/ hare.

I'd say it like Sher-ry or Sher-bit

ApolloandDaphne · 27/02/2022 02:54

It's Sher. Chair and fur sound nothing like Cher in my Scottish accent.

ApolloandDaphne · 27/02/2022 02:55

I meant Shur not fur!

liveforsummer · 27/02/2022 07:46

Neither I say it Sher as does anyone. I e ever heard say it

liveforsummer · 27/02/2022 07:49

@WlNDMlLL

Why do the English mostly say Cher as in chair but seem to universally pronounce the surname Kerr as as sort of 'kuuh' sound? As opposed to rhyming with care, like it does in Scotland. So inconsistent!
I'm in Scotland and Kerr doesn't rhyme with care it rhymes with Cher
BrinksmansEntry · 27/02/2022 07:51

Cher sounds like the start of sherry or shergar or Stanley Baxter saying floor in Parliament Glasgow (flerr, obvs)

Where I grew up floor was flair not flerr 😆
