How do you pronounce...

Cher. As in Sonny and Cher.

Cher to rhyme with chair? (Share)
Or Cher to rhyme with fur? (Shur)

I've been arguing with my dad who was around at the beginning of her career and says she was introduced as Shur in the 60s. Confused

I'd say it like Share. Share it between us.

Sherbert is shur burt to me (Dublin accent)
and Sherry is different again sherr ee

Thatsplentyjack · 26/02/2022 22:19

@FatFredsFriedEgg

In the same way I'd say sherbet or sherry.

So completely differently then?

No, Cher, sherbet and sherry all have the same sher sound in my accent.
Classica · 26/02/2022 22:22

If I say sherbet with the same sound as sherry...I end up doing a bad Scouse accent. All roads lead to Cilla it seems.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 26/02/2022 22:22

Ok. I think we need to say why accent we have when we post to save any confusion this late on. Saturday. Wine

I won't say where I'm from, but think

Eh
Peh

Says it all!

CormoranStrike · 26/02/2022 22:37

Cher with and SH to rhyme with the surname Kerr, definitely not to rhyme with share.

BrassyLocks · 26/02/2022 22:37

We really need the phonetic alphabet for these kind of threads.
I say /ʃeə/ not /ʃɜ:/

MrsBungle · 26/02/2022 22:41

Sounds nothing like share in my Scottish accent! I’d say it sher as in the beginning of Sherry.

MajorCarolDanvers · 26/02/2022 22:44

Chair fur and Cher all sound completely different to me.

I pronounce Cher as Sher same as Sherry, Sherbet

WlNDMlLL · 26/02/2022 22:50

Why do the English mostly say Cher as in chair but seem to universally pronounce the surname Kerr as as sort of 'kuuh' sound? As opposed to rhyming with care, like it does in Scotland. So inconsistent!

soontobeamama · 26/02/2022 23:01

Neither - I would pronounce it sher as in sherry.

aintnospringchicken · 26/02/2022 23:04

I would pronounce it ( in my Scottish accent) as Sher like the beginning of sherry

mizzo · 26/02/2022 23:06

I love a thread on pronunciation, they're fascinating.
Cher, sherry and a Sherbert all sound different to me unless I do a Liverpudlian accent.

BeefSupreme · 26/02/2022 23:06

It's Sher, not Share.

FatFredsFriedEgg · 26/02/2022 23:13

I can hear in my head a Scottish pronunciation that's sort of 'shayre' for Cher. I've never hear 'sherbert' in a Scottish accent but I can imagine a sort of 'rolling 'shayrrbert'. What I can't imagine, despite my sherry-drinking Scottish DM and DGM, is 'sherry' pronounced in the same way. It rhymes with merry and jerry, it can't sound like shayrry can it?

whiteworldgettingwhiter · 26/02/2022 23:17

Sher

There's more than one Scottish accent.

I say Sher not Shayre.

Sherbert in my Scottish accent would be sher-bit. It is not a shay sound. And Cher would be Sher too
Barrawarra · 26/02/2022 23:24

Sherbet for me in Scottish accent also sounds exactly as written - sher-bet. No shares involved. Same sound as sherry.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 26/02/2022 23:25

0:36, Cher says it as "share".

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 26/02/2022 23:26

Sher. Certainly not share.

GranolaHolmes · 26/02/2022 23:31

@Thatsplentyjack yeah sherbet and sherry are the same sound with a Scottish accent.

I know, I'm Scottish, I was just curious where else pronounced it the same or if it was because that poster was Scottish also.

well share and Kerr rhyme in my Dublin accent.
