Are you taking any steps because of the Ukraine situation?

The situation for those in the country is heartbreaking, I've sobbed at several news stories this morning and my heart aches for a Ukrainian friend whose family is still there.

On a far more selfish, practical level have you "done" anything to protect yourself and your own situation? If nothing else I can see an impending deepening of the financial crisis. A friend has taken all her money out of the bank, for example, but it's true she's prone to a bit of drama. Gas supply worries me a lot.

Is there anything we should be doing now to help a bit if the situation is prolonged or worsens?

I'm stock-piling chocolate just in case supplies are affected

I don't know, I think the PM has been very lucky that this has come as a major distraction just at the time he needed it!
I think the threat of WW3 being lucky is a bit of a stretch. I think I'd prefer a covid party fine any day.

Have made a donation to a Ukrainian animal shelter who is struggling to feed the rescues in their care.

This is excellent. I am going to look at doing this after work. Would you link who you donated to?

From one vegetarian to another... please tell me you're joking, right?

There were big queues at our supermarket cash points yesterday, people were taking out cash so they had some at home in case Russia takes out our internet and the banking/cash point system goes down.

And they all told you this?

Of course nothing about this situation is lucky, but a war or the prospect of war is very good for a PM, especially one like Johnson who can talk a good fight and needs the public to be distracted from everything else he's done. I'd bet his rating went up overnight after the 4am phonecall was made public.

If people keep panicking like this then it's going to be the panicking itself which causes us all issues. Why the hell do people posts things like this? We all know that there are anxious people out there who will read this and run with it. Might only be a handful, but that's how these things start.

The only thing I'm doing is making sure I have enough petrol to travel 4 hours. We are choosing a care home for my parents in an emergency situation and I need to travel at the drop of a hat. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't be doing anything.

I think threads like this should be deleted. They serve no useful purpose.

DetailMouse · 25/02/2022 13:57

@TheUsualShitshow

I don't believe anyone outside MN is panicking, frankly
I don't think anyone here is panicking, just thinking about sensible steps.

He’s rating certainly went up for me once we saw how embarrassingly weak Europe’s rhetoric currently is in the situation. I understand they’re tied up with him financially but bloody hell, he’s killing little kids with missiles.

limitedperiodonly · 25/02/2022 14:00

@DetailMouse "heartbreaking", "sobbed", "Ukrainian friend" etc. Meanwhile, moving swiftly on...

@Truegreen

I’ve cancelled my Mediterranean cruise in school holiday.
Why?

[quote FAQs]Where my daughter works at the weekend they have one of these card readers, their internet is a bit unreliable in the middle of nowhere, she had never seen one before and when I picked her up her boss (same age as me) was laughing tell me how they had to show her what it was.

My new credit card doesn't have the raised numbers on it so wouldn't work in one of those.

I miss them in a way as they were one of those oddly satisfying gadgets.

Well there we are, so everything else is forgotten and he was politically on his knees a week ago.

The level of hysteria on this thread is worrying. Nothing will happen to the UK!

Our PM's further up Putin's arse than an enema
StrawberryLollipops · 25/02/2022 14:02

Practical steps I can see is protesting outside the embassy or other meaningful locations

Nor do I, there's no signs of panic in my neck of the woods. Posters on MN have a particular craft for making every single thing absolutely about them. Meanwhile Ukrainians seem nothing short of stoic and the streams of garbled panic here today and yesterday seem nothing short of cowardly in comparison.

That's not true, we're already seeing some affect.

I saw a disaster advert once and chaos just erupted so having cash was pointless as people just got robbed!

NobodysGonnaKnow · 25/02/2022 14:05

That’s a bit hyperbolic! Where have I said everything is forgotten? I said I’m grateful the PM has come out and said it’s unacceptable and is trying to deliver sanctions. He also criticised Europe for falling into bed with a rogue state. I think that’s something that should be criticised! That doesn’t mean he should have eaten that vol au vent during lockdown.

Tory party funding and cash for questions? Or something else?

FourChimneys · 25/02/2022 14:07

Perhaps we could build nuclear bunkers out of toilet rolls?

The only practical thing I'm planning to do is give my Ukrainian work associate time to talk if he needs it. And a big hug as he is worried about his elderly parents.

I actually think/hope that his reputation has diminished such now that he doesn't get a bounce from anything he does.
MrsSugar · 25/02/2022 14:08

I filled my car with petrol given that the cost is likely to jump up. I’ve fuck all savings so nothing to withdraw. In the event that the shit hits the fan I’ve said il just get my family n take to bed. There’s nothing we can do. U can’t put run shit like this x
