Are you taking any steps because of the Ukraine situation?

The situation for those in the country is heartbreaking, I've sobbed at several news stories this morning and my heart aches for a Ukrainian friend whose family is still there.

On a far more selfish, practical level have you "done" anything to protect yourself and your own situation? If nothing else I can see an impending deepening of the financial crisis. A friend has taken all her money out of the bank, for example, but it's true she's prone to a bit of drama. Gas supply worries me a lot.

Is there anything we should be doing now to help a bit if the situation is prolonged or worsens?

Well heat gives you a clue plus there's the old plunder every house till you find something. And let's be honest if civil unrest unfolds some will just do it for shits & giggles.

I've been stockpiling weapons for that scenario.

I'm going to check out thermal imagining cameras tonight.

@SpinningTheSeedsOfLove

Iodine tablets have been regularly distributed in naval and port cities in the UK for many years whenever a nuclear sub is in. The tablets are distributed by the local authorities (i.e. councils) usually, including to schools, medical settings, prisons and care homes. It's in case of an accident.

The lucky recipients live in places like Faslane, Plymouth-Devonport, Portsmouth-Gosport, Barrow-in-Furness and Portland. Apparently the majority of the tablets go to educational settings. We're talking tens of thousands of tablets being distributed over the years.

I'm in Plymouth and have never heard of this. I've worked for the MOD, as has my son in the dockyard when nuclear subs were in, but know nothing about this. I've just asked my son in law, who is in the navy on a nuclear sub, and he said they get given them when the go under the water. Not civilians though.

Plymouths plan www.plymouth.gov.uk/sites/default/files/Nuclear%20Emergency%20Booklet%202020.pdf

Gossports plan

I couldn’t find the other two (couldn’t be arsed to do more than a rudimentary google) but that should tell you all you need to know.

I’m quite surprised you’re unaware of the plan should a failure happen.

I’ve lived in two towns with nuclear subs in and was aware local authorities/military/emergency services distributed the iodine tablets hence the exercises I mentioned to practice distribution and emergency drills. They were advertised on local news too that the drills were happening.

I live near AWE and we are also not given iodine but I think the council has some sort of emergency plan. My multivitamin appears to contain iodine though. Pretty resigned to the fact that being situated between AWE and London/Heathrow means if it comes to war over here we’ll be obliterated.

The meltdown warning siren that’s tested weekly is a bit unnerving

When I moved to Finland I didn't know that towns and cities test their town warning siren every week - the first time I heard it I was rather scared, wondering why on earth there was an air raid siren going off! Now I live in a part of town that's too far out of the centre to hear the siren which was great, until now, when I rather wish I would be able to hear it if it went off at any other time than midday on a Monday.

@EveningOverRooftops

I've looked at the link and agree it's there, but that's as far as it goes. I've asked a few people since I posted and nobody seemed to know what I'm talking about. I've lived in Plymouth since 1982 and have 4 adult children who've lived here all their lives and know nothing.

Hey ho though. I don't want to survive a nuclear holocaust, so I'll just go on the Hoe and watch the fireworks as I die.

That's always been my plan 😉

weleasewoderick23 · 27/02/2022 19:46

What's AWE?

deadlanguage · 27/02/2022 19:47

AWE (Atomic Weapons Establishment) is where we create our nuclear weapons en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_Weapons_Establishment

weleasewoderick23 · 27/02/2022 19:49

Thankyou!

Hey, you have a plan and that’s more than most people who are hoping it’ll all blow over. Wink

Back when I was there over a decade ago now they had an exercise for the plan and it was on local news. I’d not long given birth too, could see the dockyard from my front doorstep.

Perhaps only people in the immediate vicinity knew about it?

Anyway. You have the link to the plan too so you’re better equipped than almost everyone else to make the right choice for you so, you’re a step ahead in that regard than you were a few hours ago. Grin

riceuten · 28/02/2022 14:56

No, but judging by the morons locally, panic buying petrol and tinned goods/pasta/flour/bog roll, other people are.

Pulling out currency that would be rendered worthless in the event of an invasion ? That's truly ridiculous.

Porcupineintherough · 28/02/2022 18:07

@riceuten where on earth are you that people are panic buying? I think the currency is in case of a cyber attack on the banks rather than in case if an invasion.

Massive queues here for petrol over the weekend. Pasta and tomato sauce gone from Lidl and the Co-Op. A cyber attack on all banks simultaneously ?

Roxy69 · 28/02/2022 19:13

Good grief what have some people come to?
Although, I panic-bought a tub of ice-cream last Friday as there were only 6 left.

Natsku · 28/02/2022 19:43

I picked up my prescription from the pharmacy earlier and for the first time ever I was questioned about picking it up early (I always get it when I have about two or three weeks worth left because I can't always get to the pharmacy during the limited hours its open and never been an issue before) so I'm wondering if they've had an issue with people stockpiling medicines.
I also asked out of interest if they had any iodine and nope, all out!
