Are you taking any steps because of the Ukraine situation?

The situation for those in the country is heartbreaking, I've sobbed at several news stories this morning and my heart aches for a Ukrainian friend whose family is still there.

On a far more selfish, practical level have you "done" anything to protect yourself and your own situation? If nothing else I can see an impending deepening of the financial crisis. A friend has taken all her money out of the bank, for example, but it's true she's prone to a bit of drama. Gas supply worries me a lot.

Is there anything we should be doing now to help a bit if the situation is prolonged or worsens?

And you think what exactly is going to protect you from a nuclear weapon? Money under your mattress certainly won’t. Neither will toilet roll.

If there's full scale nuclear war I hope I'm right in the centre of it when the bomb drops but there's a world of things that could happen to make life difficult and uncomfortable between where we are now and that.

Fucking hell, just read she’s withdrawn 85K? 😳
Should you be sharing stuff like that online?

Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2022 09:42

We should all change our passwords on here perhaps. Just in case.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 25/02/2022 09:42

I suspect you’re right re. Cyber attacks but putting 85k under your mattress isn’t the solution.

I really hope this friend hasn’t advertised what she’s done wisely. Her risk of burglary will be very high indeed.

No, the £85k is the protection amount

DetailMouse · 25/02/2022 09:44

@Sparklingbrook

Are you sure this 'friend' isn't you OP?
Yes thank you. I share some of her concerns, but at present also agree with PPs that the risk of burglary is greater.

It seems sensible to think about it though.

How do you go about arranging a collection of £85K in cash from your bank? And I ask this as someone who used to work in one. Do you have to stand there while they count it all out to you? How do you get it home?
You'd have some explaining to do paying it all back in. Confused

@DetailMouse I was in Bulgaria when their banks crashed and everything went cash only, it got difficult very very quickly and prices sky rocketed, so I agree a enough cash for a week for essentials isn’t a bad idea.

Yes, this is exactly it. It's not like it's never happened.

I've no idea how much she's talking about. £85k is the FCSC limit PP asked about.

Prudent to keep some cash handy. We try to keep around £500 at home for emergencies.
We have a good supply of food and hygiene essentials, plus things like candles, batteries for torches etc.
Scan any important documents - passports, insurance, house deeds etc and save on phone and ipad.

Realistically there's not much else one can do, apart from hope and pray that this ends soon.

I think MNHQ needs to set up a Putin's Propaganda board on here, so all these threads can be shovelled in there where they belong, as a historical archive.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 25/02/2022 09:48

I think your thinking is just ramping up your anxiety. I think covid has heightened all our anxieties in regard to food and petrol shortages. If we seriously move into a war footing things will be rationed and we will be forced to do as the government asks. Pretty much covid but with radiation instead of germs. We sit and we wait.

LowlandLucky · 25/02/2022 09:48

Other than buying extra animal feed I wont do anything differently. We don't keep much money in the bank anyway, we live in a rural area so our vehicle is always topped up, our coal and woodpile is healthy, the larder is depleted but then we are nearing the end of winter.

It might be £100 or something which wouldn't be that unusual.

It means the OP just said she thought ‘life savings’ and the 85k was mentioned by someone else when talking about the savings amount online the government protects incase of a banking collapse.

I think you might be right. There is a request for 'War' topic in Site Stuff.
BadgerStripes · 25/02/2022 09:50

@NobodysGonnaKnow

FFS no. I’m not going to do anything hysterical and I suggest you don’t either. It’s an extremely selfish attitude.
How is it ‘selfish’ to be concerned?
DialsMavis · 25/02/2022 09:51

As PP have done, I am going to take a few hundred £ out of the bank, enough for a couple of food shops and any other emergencies. I don't think that is drastic, I never have cash knocking about so would like to be able to eat if there is a cyber attack

OP hasn't said how much

BuyDirt · 25/02/2022 09:55

We’re fine here in the UK. Make a donation to help the people actually affected instead.....or at least as well as, if you can.

Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2022 09:55

@DDIJ

Is it alright for people to prep for different eventualities if they live in a country where they are advised to prep by the state?
It's alright for everybody to do exactly what they want really. If that's the state advice then it would seem wise to apply it. Like when there's a threat of a tornado or tsunami/earthquake. But I don't think that's what OP is talking about.
Im2022 · 25/02/2022 09:55
