Helping DP downsize

TDCtomorrow · 16/02/2022 22:45

I need some suggestions on how to start helping DP downsize. Every room is full as DF is a hoarder. I don't know where to start or how to go about it.

Only DM will be able to help due to DF being unwell.

It's so overwhelming and I've only got 3 weeks

Count down is on. Need to be out by Sunday evening.
Got removals coming Friday but still so much to sort out that can't be taken

I have no suggestions, just sending positive energy to get you through this.
By this time next week you will be done with 1 place at least 💐🍸

TDCtomorrow · 17/03/2022 19:08

I'm a bit broken
The last 2 days have been awful. I feel like I've had the life sucked out of me
The extent of the stuff is indescribable. I literally can't believe how much keeps appearing. The local charity shop will start turning me away soon and the bloke at the dump is giving me weird looks now too.

My sister is a hoarder - I can feel the pain. Every time I go to her flat I itch to get a large skip and just Chuck stuff in. I haven't been in it in months as it's too depressing.

It's so hard isn't it. It feel like a massive burden on me right now. I can see light but the tunnel is very long. I'm so scared it will all start again too

How are you doing?

How are you doing?
I'm not even sure anymore. I'm physically exhausted. Had a day of deliveries yesterday and the big furniture taken to the new place. The old house still looks full though so the next 2 days will be dedicated to getting rid of stuff. Hopefully by tomorrow evening I'll be feeling more accomplished

@TDCtomorrow

Re the previous post I dont was to depress you but it probably will. We have cleared (well not completely but the worst) my sisters flat a few times but it just builds up again. You need to address the source.

She wants to move somewhere new and clean and shiny but doesn't see that give it 6/12 months it would just be the same as where she is now.

DontbesuchanarseGlenda · 19/03/2022 07:03

OP you're doing an amazing thing for your parents. Soon it will be done and you can relax, you've got this.

‘Just keep swimming’. The motto from Finding Nemo, is what keeps us going at work when the day seems never ending and you are peering down the barrel of a double shift, due to covid related staff shortages.
Try that one 💐🍸

I know why he does it. I have no idea how to resolve it though. It's issues from around 70 years ago.

Grinthat's what I told my DM yesterday just keeping chipping at it. What DF doesn't know is when boxes are being dropped at new place I'm sorting them again and getting rid of more stuff

How did you go yesterday?

GreenClock · 21/03/2022 11:09

I went through this in 2014 OP. Solidarity!

I hope that things went smoothly.

How did you go yesterday?
Not very well. DM was really ill so didn't leave her bed Sunday or yesterday and DF had to stay with her so it was doing stuff myself. Totally failed to empty it though. Did 3 hours yesterday and today so I'm working late to make up the time. Booked a day off tomorrow to make a big dent. I'll empty it by Saturday if it kills me

Just keep going, you will get there.
Then plan a long, hot Bath.
🍰☕️

We are probably going to have to do this with my MIL, she needs to move for financial reasons up to near us, 250 miles away. But her house is full to brimming, not grubby just so much stuff.

Pray for me I might be finished tomorrow.
Just a couple of items left and I need to clean it a bit. Never again though

OP posts:
Weenurse · 26/03/2022 08:22

Are you done?

HelebethH · 26/03/2022 08:44

I know this may sound a strange way to approach the situation but I had a work colleague in the same predicament who rented a self storage unit for a couple of weeks. He and his wife spent a weekend extracting everything from the clutter that was going to the 1 bed bungalow his parents were moving to and put it in storage. Everything left in the house had been disposed of in the following week. Mostly to the tip. They employed someone with a van to do the tip runs. Moving day same man with van collected everything from the lock up. It worked for them although they did have parents to stay for a couple of nights whilst move was sorted.

TDCtomorrow · 26/03/2022 11:26

@Weenurse

Are you done?
Almost. A neighbour is hopefully having the dining table I'm just here cleaning up then I'm done The amount that needs unpacking and sorting the other end is bonkers So that's next
