11 year old girl, what size clothes?

Can I ask what size clothes your DDs wear.
My Dd is 11 and (I think) a fairly normal sized child. She is the smallest of her friends.
She has hit puberty so is currently a bit bigger round the tummy than she was but, again, no bigger than any of her friends.
We recently went shopping and found many shops sizing to be really weird.
Age 14 clothes that would barely even fit my 9 year old round the waist!
If you have girls of a similar age, what size do they wear and where do they shop??
We did find some stuff in H&M in the end but interested to know where else to look.

Dd11 mostly wears age 9/10 tops and age 8/9/10 trousers, mostly h&m. She's pretty tall and skinny.

Clothes are weird though, I just bought her a george dress off ebay for a school drama, it fits me, I really like it too Grin dd13 had a 11-12 coat from tu that was too big on me.

Smartiepants79 · 11/02/2022 21:51

Her younger sister is 9! Youngest didn’t try them on I was simply using her as a comparison to say that I thought the clothes seemed small.

My just turned 11 year old is in ladies xsmall/small or size 8-10. She can fit in some age 15-16 but depends where it's from. She's one of the 3 tallest in her class, not overweight but she's never going to be a tiny girl either.

My just 11 year old is 160cm and needs age 13/14 for length. She’s average build, not overweight but not very slim either. We don’t buy fashion brands, just supermarkets or M&S/Next. She’s not really developed yet so her waist is a little undefined, so I could see that maybe in clothes that are more adult style the waist might not quite work.

Hb12 · 11/02/2022 22:18

DD is 11.5 and tall, she's around 5'4". She's always been very muscly, and is now changing shape a little. She will take a 12 in some things, but normally a 13. Her uniform is M&S, most of her casual clothes are h&m, new look etc.

lumpofcomfort · 11/02/2022 22:24

My DD is 11, almost 12. She is quite small height-wise, was always petite all over but has filled out a lot in the past year or so and is now slightly overweight. She needs to wear 12-13 to fit around the waist.

Dogsaresomucheasier · 11/02/2022 22:26

Boden used to do an amazing teen range with lots of forgiving, elasticated waists that were perfect for tweens. There might still be some available second hand.

Other than that I did have to start buying adult clothes once mine got curves.

Passthecake30 · 11/02/2022 22:28

My dd 12 is 5ft5 and wears age 14 or a size 6. She’s always fit the length plus the width her of her clothes, unlike DS 13 who needs adjustable waists.

whattodo2019 · 11/02/2022 22:32

At 11 my daughter was just moving out of Boden and into Hollister, Jack Wills the odd bit of New Look.

SlipperyLizard · 11/02/2022 22:37

My DD is 12 and 5ft 7, but with very long legs. Tops can be from the teen ranges, but trousers are a women’s 8 long length or they’re ankle swingers

lugeforlife · 11/02/2022 22:57

Dd1 is 5ft 4, mostly leg, skinny early bit of puberty, feet like boats (size 7 compared to my dainty 4.5s). Age 12. She wears a 13/14 or and a size 6 or xs in bottoms and dress type things. XS or S in hoodies, age 12 or size 4 in t shirts/tops. Always have issues with waist vs length even with adjustable waists.

Dd2 is 5ft 3. Good way through puberty so some boobs, also 12. Very Sporty so skinny but quite muscly. Less leggy than her sister. She has 12/13 leggings/bottoms, same for tops,xs or s in hoodies.

Yika · 11/02/2022 23:03

My DD is 11.4 and can still fit age 12 clothes but is moving into size 14. Zara age 14 is good. She is average height and weight or possibly slightly above average.

BuddhaForMary · 11/02/2022 23:04

DD11 is in adult size small/medium depending on how she wants them to fit. She quite likes loose fitting/baggy style at the minute so she's been getting ladies 12/14.

ColonelPine · 11/02/2022 23:05

My 11 year old normally wears adult size 4/6. Children’s clothes she’s usually 13/14.

Smartiepants79 · 11/02/2022 23:25

It’s interesting how few of these girls are actually fitting into age 11/12 clothes!
Surely that suggests the sizing is not fit for purpose.

Not really, it just means there's no such thing as an average girl at the age of 11. Some will have hit puberty and/or be a foot taller than others. The sizing is irrelevant. Just buy what fits and ignore the label.

DD has Rarely been in the "correct" size clothes since she was a newborn. But looking at height and chest or waist size, she has. But the age gives a starting point, like the clothes size does for adults.
Satingreenshutters · 12/02/2022 00:59

My daughter is petite so 9/10 fits her in H&M. Anything bigger than that and the waist is too big, she is 11. Within normal weight range though.

InglouriousBasterd · 12/02/2022 01:13

It’s a funny age for size - DD is 5’6 and developed and wears size 10 (loose fit, she hates clinging clothes) or age 14-15, size 7 feet; her best friend comes up well below her shoulder and is tiny all over, size 1 feet. She has friends who are shorter and wider, one who is taller and skinnier, and everything in between!

It’s so variable at this age due to puberty.

They seem to all like New Look and H and M (kids and ladies divided) and Primark.

CustardyCreams · 12/02/2022 05:33

My dd age 11, 148cm. She is completely “straight”, very fit and lean (20th percentile weight for her age). Size 11-12 is ok length-wise but still massive round the waist.

She is more slender than some of her friends but majority of them are similar build, at different heights. She is in a very sporty set and not developing early. I tried her in a size 4 item and it was too big, wrong shape. She is definitely still child-shaped.

TattiePants · 12/02/2022 06:44

DD, recently turned 11, is 171cm / 5ft 6 and size 6.5 feet. School uniform is the easiest as we’ve always bought M&S extra long skirts/trousers so she wears 11-12. Places like Zara & H&M she can wear some of their age 14 but a lot is very short.
She’s recently been buying adult size 8 clothes from New Look and some size 6 tops from Next.

None of mine ever really fit the clothing size of the age they were at the time. Even as babies. And the difference in sizing from shop to shop is astounding sometimes.
edwinbear · 12/02/2022 11:24

DD is 10 and very much true to size, so wears age 10-11 in most shops.

nosyupnorth · 12/02/2022 12:01

Age based sizing in generally for pre-pubescent children, once their body shape starts to change then petite adult clothing will have more correct proportions for them. With girls hitting puberty older a lot of the teen sizes are redundant except for young women who happen to have kept a close to pre-pubescent body shape.

Juanbablo · 12/02/2022 12:09

Mine is almost 12 and smaller than most of her friends and wears a size 11-12.
