Things you find a bit odd about Mumsnet

Let me start by saying this is 100% lighthearted and fueled by being a bit bored in my last hour before weekend officially begins.

Anyway, I ventured onto the Royals board recently and found it a bit weird that people refer to Kate Middleton as Catherine. Now, I know that's her full first name (well I assume it is) but I've never heard anyone IRL refer to her as anything but Kate. Maybe I'm behind the times as my Royals knowledge isn't very up to date (as you'll notice by calling Kate Middleton.)

I'm sure I'll regret starting this but anyone else have anything?

Oh - and also the many posters who seem to believe that all men are evil, and whatever the post is about it's always the man at fault. Women can actually be very capable of lying, but never in MN-land.

Obviously they haven't experienced the thousands of good men in the world, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Yes, but then everytime a woman is brutally murdered, the NAMALTs turn up.

How everyone wrings their hands over the environment and then talks about how they boil wash their towels after one use, has about 10 showers a day and takes multiple long haul holidays a year.

How rude and confrontational it is. I've recently joined another forum and had a disagreement with another poster. We both apologised and it was all good. MN is so analytical and aggressive sometimes and I find it embarrassing how some seem to think that's a good thing

Nomoreusernames1244 · 14/01/2022 19:24

The hygiene obsession. And the absolute belief that they can pinpoint the last time somebody showered/washed their bra by smell alone in a public place.

The weight and under eating threads. “You may look absolutely fine at 5’4 and 7.5 stone, o/p, but i’m 5’7 and I’d just feel flabby”.

LondonQueen · 14/01/2022 19:28

That nearly everyone is no contact with someone in their family! I don't get along with a lot of my family but going no contact wouldn't help it.

No edit button.
No "like" button.

BoodleBug51 · 14/01/2022 19:31

The health anxiety really bewilders me, I've never met anyone in real life with it. And the bandying around of their "vulnerable" status and how they really really mustn't get Covid. It's fecking weird. And the prescribed drug use....... most of them must be off their faces 24/7.

And the dog haters........ I have no words.

WorraLiberty · 14/01/2022 19:34

I've never understood why so many MNetters have exes who don't pay them a penny in child maintenance, yet all their DPs apparently pay their exes far more than they need to.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone admit they live with a man who doesn't pay CM to their ex.

Nomoreusernames1244 · 14/01/2022 19:35

The complete buy in to the women must change their names- i love being a mrs- need to have the same name as my children marriage crap.

That and the insistance that if you have different names you need to take millions of legal documents everywhere or you will be stopped constantly and accused of child abduction, so you must take your husbands name to prove you are the children’s mother.

Cherryblossoms85 · 14/01/2022 19:36

Sometimes I think there are only 10 different posters that name change Grin

MintJulia · 14/01/2022 19:40

The biggest thing is that people worry so much about what other people think. In-laws, friends, work colleagues, ex partners.

Life is much simpler when you accept that how you run your life is your business and all those other people are completely irrelevant.

Exhausteddog · 14/01/2022 19:42

Yes. 🙄
And the disregard of any home made food that work colleagues/friends give them because all people (apart from them) must have minging kitchens, no hygeine standards at all, and let cats roam the work surfaces and canaries shit on the stove.

The weight and under eating threads. “You may look absolutely fine at 5’4 and 7.5 stone, o/p, but i’m 5’7 and I’d just feel flabby”.

We've lost sight of what a normal weight is!

User48751490 · 14/01/2022 19:45

Everything is "odd".

elelel · 14/01/2022 19:47

And the prescribed drug use....... most of them must be off their faces 24/7.

Definitely this. I am amazed at the amount of people taking sertraline - I feel like an outsider on that alone!

The other one for me is how many people know 'someone high up' when discussing the Royal family and Government.

wishingitwasspring · 14/01/2022 19:51

The Feminism boards.... everyone sounds so fierce and angry. I read stuff because I'm interested in it but they're soooo intense.

The racism on the Black Mumsnetter board baffles me.

I have learnt not to engage with or answer most things. Just a big pinch of salt.

PeopleBeCrazy · 14/01/2022 19:52

Not odd as much as an irritation...

But the vitriol some posters throw at other people for literally no fucking reason!

Don't like what someone has said about something? Move on!! No need to post just for the sake of an argument.

I don't mean anything serious more like those who argue that the sky isn't blue type stuff

Got nothing nice to say? Then say nothing.

I swear some people just enjoy a good keyboard argument Grin

JanisMoplin · 14/01/2022 19:54

I love the Feminism boards though I am mostly a lurker. It is the one place these days that you are allowed to be gender critical.

Huntswomanonthemove · 14/01/2022 19:58

I find it weird that there are so many MIL threads on here. Real life is just not like that.

Forgotthespuds · 14/01/2022 19:58

Some parts of it are bonkers and so far removed from my own life & the lives of my friends & family. But that's why I love it. When I read a lot of threads I picture the op as the posh mum from the Catherine tate show. All gooseberry yoghurts & olive oil.

Reallycantbesarsed · 14/01/2022 20:00

MIL bashing really irritates me ! People forget that one day they will probably be a MIL or FIL .

stuntbubbles · 14/01/2022 20:00

The sheer amount of daily vacuuming that goes on.

I don’t want an edit button, it would be anarchy. Trolls could have a field day being horrible, then quickly edit.

Her given name is Catherine but they changed it to Katherine otherwise the initials would be WC (William Catherine)

Grin

This is a welcome burst of mental. Her name is Catherine, no one changed it. She was known as Kate as a young woman.

flashy44 · 14/01/2022 20:12

@Doublevodka

Definitely all the abbreviations beginning with D. I found it really weird when I joined and still do to be honest.
i did too

@Yellow85 & @GlumyGloomer I don't know if it's different because I'm on the iPhone app but I can swipe the bookmark on and off from the left.
