Things you find a bit odd about Mumsnet

Let me start by saying this is 100% lighthearted and fueled by being a bit bored in my last hour before weekend officially begins.

Anyway, I ventured onto the Royals board recently and found it a bit weird that people refer to Kate Middleton as Catherine. Now, I know that's her full first name (well I assume it is) but I've never heard anyone IRL refer to her as anything but Kate. Maybe I'm behind the times as my Royals knowledge isn't very up to date (as you'll notice by calling Kate Middleton.)

I'm sure I'll regret starting this but anyone else have anything?

The never ending chicken for 27 meals, massive salad and crusty bread.
I think the high levels of people who not answer their door or phone (like me) are to do with it being online. A bigger cross section of people than you may meet in real life.
I like the fact that people are generally called out on being an arse, although not as much as used to be.
People are very comforting on here when someone is in need.
So, not things that are all odd but things I’ve noticed over the years.

UnderTheMoonlightWeDanced · 14/01/2022 18:34

How mean people can be!! “I’m sorry but that’s disgusting….. I would NVER do that and no one I know would….that 9 year old of a THIEF call the police disgusting…etc etc”

Pumperthepumper · 14/01/2022 18:34

@CaliforniaDrumming

A very high level of social anxiety, I think higher than in real life. In some cases, even paranoia. The belief that school gate mums are cliquey, office colleagues are out to get you, everyone at a party is staring at you and hates you...
This is mine too, I swear people on here think Motherland was a documentary.

And just generally the way people treat their friends on here. People have a zero tolerance policy for their pals and that’s really weird.

The number of people who are boiling to death if the thermostat goes over 17° in winter. What on earth do they do in summer when it hits 30°?

Warpedfrailty · 14/01/2022 18:36

Any post about pubic hair removal. You will always get these three responses (without fail):

  1. Ewww, does your BF / DP / DH like prepubescent girls?
  2. You do know that pubic hair is there for a reason, don't you Hmm
  3. You are influenced by porn you know, there is NO other reason you'd want to remove your pubic hair. No reason. None!

@Legoisthebest

All the abriviations. DD DS DC DGC DGD DGS DSS DSD..... You have DH (husband) or DP (partner) but then some people put OH (other half) or SO (significant other).... honestly just write "my husband" (or whatever is relevant). It's gets so confusing. DF - is that father or friend? NC LC PFB NT BM CF and so on.... Just write the proper words. It's not like 90s text messages where you had to pay per letter Grin
I think you’re the first person I have seen who feels the same as I do about the ridiculous use of abbreviations!

Strange turns of phrase I’ve never heard spoken in RL.

What I find weird is what threads get deleted. Fun harmless ones get removed in minutes but there are threads with all posters agreeing with a horrific opinion that stay open despite people reporting it.

And all the abbreviations used for conception and pregnancy. I've had 9 pregnancies and still get confused

Maybe I’m just missing how to do it, but the fact you can’t unbookmark. You have no idea how many times I hit that by mistake when scrolling.
Oh, this too! And I never learn. I always try to tap again to unbookmark because that is how it SHOULD work.

YY to the point about which threads get deleted. There are threads on here against protected characteristics - religions and race - that would obviously fall foul of hate incident legislation yet they get to stay up. Someone dislikes the answers they receive on a completely innocent thread and it gets deleted in minutes.
Chikapu · 14/01/2022 18:52

The abbreviations make me cringe, surely typing husband, wife, son, daughter etc is just as quick and easy? Ddog or Dcat seem particularly silly.
Everything is 'grim'.
How easily threads get deleted.

I find it odd that the general public persist in using a name that's not hers. In any other context it would be pretty rude. Plenty of people post on here expressing frustration about the rudeness of others getting their name wrong, and Kate Middleton isn't her name.

I'm not a royalist but I think it's unsurprising that regular royal thread posters show her the very basic courtesy of getting her name right.

CaliforniaDrumming · 14/01/2022 18:53

Nearly everybody hates their mother? Or at least many ( most?) do?

Heronwatcher · 14/01/2022 18:53

The eating threads- genuinely no matter how little/ healthy the meal, within 2 posts someone will be criticising or calling someone a glutton.
Also quite how many people are fundamentally unable to stand up for themselves at the most basic level whether it’s their partner, MIL, toxic family or a CF. It makes me wonder what we’re doing wrong as a society, though I have high hopes for the millennials Smile

scully29 · 14/01/2022 18:55

Mumsnets perfect the way it is. I like how it doesnt change every few years like facebook, that would be no fun. I like the abbreviations its like having a secret code when i think about it. I like how you can report a thread when honestly outraged about peoples offensive views. I guess the odd thing is how many people seem to have offensive views. And yes, the school run thing. I generally hope mumset isnt representative of the real world. My school run is great.

SunshineOnKeith · 14/01/2022 18:57

Their MILs surely? Wink
CaliforniaDrumming · 14/01/2022 18:59

I would understand if it were the MIL. Mine is no picnic.

MissyB1 · 14/01/2022 19:05

The hate for boys and mums of boys.
The gender disappointment threads - see above.
The gender stereotyping- see above.

Sort0f · 14/01/2022 19:06

The prolific use of the word vile. Haven’t heard it used anywhere else for years.

Bingo! GrinGrin
SquirrelG · 14/01/2022 19:07

How socially anxious people are about all manner of things.

Agree. I have never in real life met anyone who was so anxious about the many things posters are on MN.

I also cringe at the word "grim", am aghast at all the hatred towards MILs (despite not exactly getting on with my own when I was married, but nothing like the level of on here), despair at all the threads about OTT cleanliness and hygiene, not to mention weight and diets!!

As for the "I've chopped my leg off, should I go to A & E" threads!

I can't help but wonder how people used to manage before they could ask a bunch of strangers what they should do! I realise there is some useful advice on MN, but honestly, some people's replies are just mad.

Staffy1 · 14/01/2022 19:08

So many threads asking a pile of strangers why someone known to the OP did something and pages of agonising about it instead of just asking the person.

A580Hojas · 14/01/2022 19:11

I find the moderation inconsistent and a bit off at times. I don't understand the blanket taat rule at all.

givememykeys · 14/01/2022 19:11

@Yellow85

Why is that a problem?

Each bookmark supercedes the previous one so if you don't want bookmark the OP, job done, it's as if there were no bookmark. Although I can't think of a situation where you could have a bookmark in the wrong place Confused
