Things you find a bit odd about Mumsnet

Let me start by saying this is 100% lighthearted and fueled by being a bit bored in my last hour before weekend officially begins.

Anyway, I ventured onto the Royals board recently and found it a bit weird that people refer to Kate Middleton as Catherine. Now, I know that's her full first name (well I assume it is) but I've never heard anyone IRL refer to her as anything but Kate. Maybe I'm behind the times as my Royals knowledge isn't very up to date (as you'll notice by calling Kate Middleton.)

I'm sure I'll regret starting this but anyone else have anything?

OP posts:

Baby name recommendations that you never ever hear in RL - not Balonz

RonaLisa · 14/01/2022 21:15

I have been here since some posters were born, and am happy with the low-tech site - but I find it odd that so many people on here are frothing about Covid when nobody cares in real life.

I also think the moderation is a bit hit and miss - other than the obvious personal attacks/troll-hunting/trolling, the tendency is to delete threads/comments which aren't in line with the prevailing ideology (which is normally that peddled by The Guardian and the BBC, not that there has ever been any link between MN and Ian Katz Grin)

PureBlackVoid · 14/01/2022 21:22

Oh, thought of another one! (Exciting Friday night..)

Instant coffee. It seems to be really looked down upon. I thought it was so bizarre the first time I saw a thread about it. I love instant Nescafe, no other coffee compares to it❤️

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about this subject:

That the first bit of advice tends to be “leave the bastard”.

Like, he won’t have washed up for a week, or picks his toenails and someone will give that as advice. Never mind the impact it would have on any children - it’s clearly the only way of resolving the issue.

FiveShelties · 14/01/2022 21:28

The use of DH, DS etc, the amount of people with anxiety feel odd to me. The constant name changing is the worst thing, which means that posters can make any sort of stuff up, be as horrible as possible with no consequences.

Tiredalwaystired · 14/01/2022 21:30

Oh. And “name changing as it’s outing” and then telling the most beige story that could literally happen to anyone.

Shmippy · 14/01/2022 21:30

I find the Catherine thing odd too. Especially when you can just feel the reverential pause when they do the full 'Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge'. Stop genuflecting, serfs!

And I find it weird that a lot of (presumably English) people having so little knowledge of other parts of England. I'm not even English and I know people in the West Midlands use 'mom' instead of 'mum'.

Another thing I find irksome it people pretending not to know things, such as 'Gosh, tea is a drink, I've never heard of anyone calling their supper their tea'. Yes you have, Emily, you bore.

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 14/01/2022 21:30

The DH DS thing....

I honestly thought the D stood for Demon Grin

It made sense to me as well:

"So today I had to take my Demon Children swimming etc etc"

Took me years to figure it out

By then I fully believed MN to be full of dark humoured individuals

Casamadrigal · 14/01/2022 21:34

That there are posters who seem to trawl threads to find ones where the OP is clearly in a bad place so they can stick the knife in. I honestly didn’t realise there were so many deeply nasty spiteful people in the world who appear to get genuine enjoyment from kicking people when they are down, until I joined mumsnet.

teaandchocolate1 · 14/01/2022 21:37

I find there is a real hatred for men on here sometimes from some posters. Some people are very quick to say "ltb" even in cases where there's two sides to a story.

nordica · 14/01/2022 21:39

People who care about threads started in the "wrong" topic. I saw someone complain a thread was cluttering AIBU yesterday as if it matters with hundreds of threads every day.

Also the way some posters talk about hating animals makes them sound like psychopaths. I've never known anyone hate cats and dogs like that in real life, even people who are not pet people.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/01/2022 21:39

Or the excessive hobby time but they can’t say because it’s outing and it’s cycling 🙄

It’s always cycling. If it was taxidermy that would be outing.

Roffle, as we used to say.

It was, @MarleneDietrichsSmile. It was.

The complete hatred of weddings and posters that advise people not to attend their sibling's wedding because the venue is more than a 15 minute drive. God forbid if they might have to fork out for a hotel for the night. And it's always the bride that gets blamed because she obviously wants to dress up as a princess for the day and the guests just shouldn't entertain it.

lljkk · 14/01/2022 21:44

How much detail ppl know about other people's lives.
Stuff that you think... how did they end up sharing THAT with you?
Or 'naughty' information that you don't expect to be published openly.

Eg: how many covid rules the friends break. My social media mostly died in 2020. Apparently nobody did anything social since Feb 2020. Meanwhile, MNers report seeing online pictures of their "friends" in large parties non-stop since early 2020 must all be on the Downing Street staff WhatsApp

Sparklingbrook · 14/01/2022 21:49

That people join MN and within days are whining about it not being the same as every single other site they use. Moaning about the lack of a like button, edit function, the format is all wrong and they don't like the moderating or the 'D' in front of things.
Saying that other sites are way better. Good job there's choice eh?

Sheabutterisdelish · 14/01/2022 21:49

I like not having an edit or like button, gets posters interacting properly.

As for the comments that you don't know so many anxious people or whatever in RL, surely that's the whole point of an anonymous forum? You can say this stuff and no one in your own life will need to know about it.

SallyGoLucky · 14/01/2022 21:50

The attitude towards weddings is horrendous!!! I never ever see post from bride/grooms giving off about their guests, but there are SO MANY people on here who make themselves sound so nasty. by being outraged someone has dared invite them to a wedding!! I read them and wonder who is inviting them to these weddings because they just sound like horrible people. Also the people who give off about having to give a gift, or go out of their way to attend these weddings. Shock horror no one is planning their wedding day with you personally in mind!

And then, as soon as there's a post from an unmarried woman with kids, these posters are instantly telling her her partner could not possibly love her because he won't marry her, and will eventually rob her of all her money and run off with a lady down the road!

So bizzare.

bippityboppity87 · 14/01/2022 21:50

I agree with some PP's about not having a like button. I'd rather not. If you're here for likes, then go to fb. The abbreviations like DP, DH, DC, DG for example, aren't just exclusive to mumsnet. Loads of online communities use them and have been using them for a long time, so I don't think it's weird

An edit button would be useful though. Or even just so you can put at the bottom of your original post; EDIT and write the rest of what you meant or spelling mistakes etc

Shmippy · 14/01/2022 21:52

I couldn't be doing with a like button. Then there'd be endless threads about like buttons and the detrimental effect that one post getting 154 likes v another similar post only getting 12 likes. Zzzzzzz.....

StarsAreWishes · 14/01/2022 21:52

The assumption than any female who claims they earn over £50k is lying.

^ this! Threads started asking about income, and then anyone on a high income is accused of making it up.

Sparklingbrook · 14/01/2022 21:57

Threads started asking about income

I do find them odd. Same as 'how much have you got in savings?' What difference does it make knowing what random internet strangers have in the bank or earn?

Sheabutterisdelish · 14/01/2022 22:06

What difference does it make knowing what random internet strangers have in the bank or earn?

You could say that about 90% of the topics written about though couldn't you? How many times a week do you change your sheets, walk the dog, go to the gym etc etc

Sparklingbrook · 14/01/2022 22:08

Yep, the change your sheets ones, or how often you wash your towels ones, I just hide those threads. I don't know what their point is. I don't have a dog or got to the gym so they'd get hidden too. Grin
Spudbitch · 14/01/2022 22:13

Yes abbreviations what do they mean I just scroll on past is bf best friend or boyfriend or something else how do you tell who cares just type the whole word
