In the autumn I dusted off our trusty George Forman grill and we have been using it again for toasties amongst other things , but although we have tried a few different things it always seems to end up cheese and something ham / pickle / red onion chutney / onion/ tomato / several different cheeses... last week I made Keemer toasties from the book 30 minute Mowgli ( page 72) and they were a life changer - absolutely delicious !

So I wondered if anyone here had a few ideas of different fillings for toasties , we are adventurous and like meat but also happy with vegetarian or vegan options , usually we have them for lunch on a day off at home but the keemer toasties were an evening meal

Hmmm bacon, brie and cranberry in a panini

Chutney and cheddar

Pesto and mozzerella?

Chicken mayo is an odd one from my youth - on brown bread?!

Enjoy! Smile

Seconding brie bacon and cranberry, my current pregnancy craving.
Nutella and banana - so so good.
Anything you would put on a pizza with marinara sauce and some cheese.

MackenCheese · 13/01/2022 14:27

Feta cheese with olives and tomato mmmm....

Baked beans. Or egg.

LondonWolf · 13/01/2022 14:30

My favourite is tuna melt. GOOD tuna, mayo, finely chopped red onion and celery salt and pepper, place a slice of cheese on top - I like Mexicana - cheddar with jalapeño peepers in, finally sliced pickled peppers on top of that. If you don’t like spicy or Mexican flavourings then just use normal cheddar. Amazing 😋

JoyDivisionOvenGlovesx · 13/01/2022 14:31

Oh god, I love and hate these threads in equal measure. Always so many beautiful, beautiful toasties to try.

I blame bacon, brie & cranberry for me being a dress size bigger than I’d like to be.

Not helpful, soz Grin

GozerTheGozerian · 13/01/2022 14:32

I am obsessed with blue cheese, walnut and honey at the moment. Especially Saint Agur blue creme. Just a drizzle of honey. So good!

Also the classic cheese and baked bean!!

Terfydactyl · 13/01/2022 14:33

Ok some weird ones from me.
Any leftover roux sauce? Add mushrooms or onion or tomato or pickles or olives.
Corned beef with onions or pickles or tomato. Ooh or egg.
Leftover potato and spinach.
Breakfast toastie with any or all of bacon, sausage, black pudding, mushrooms egg etc.
Ham and tomatoes no cheese.
Macaroni cheese is my favourite but DP hates cheese so I've made all of these and more. Pretty much any leftovers can go in the toastie. Even curry.

minipie · 13/01/2022 14:35

Other than cheese and something, how about

Chilli
Curry of any sort (if not too wet)
Leftover pork or sausage and applesauce

Sprig1 · 13/01/2022 14:36

We add baked beans to the usual ham, cheese etc. Also mango chutney with cheese.

  1. Bottom layer of bread.
  1. Layer of Corned Beef or Ham, whatever you have (Quorn ham or similar for veggies).
  1. In a little bowl mix a couple of spoons of baked beans, some finely diced red onion and a few slugs of soy sauce (or Worcester sauce if you like it a little more spicy).
  1. Spoon over your meat layer.
  1. Add a layer of sliced or grated cheese over the beany layer.
  1. Top slice of bread.
  1. Toast

Bloody gorgeous!

I want to try chicken and pesto

startled · 13/01/2022 14:45

Tuna melt / tuna, spring onion, mozzarella

PeeAche · 13/01/2022 14:50

For a non cheese toastie try using peanut butter. It's so gooey in between the hot bread. 🤤

Side note: in Australia they call toasties "jaffles" which is just such a nice word.

Rummikub · 13/01/2022 14:50

My dad would put all kinds of left overs into a toastie.
He would add extras like onion and spice. Delicious.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 13/01/2022 14:51

Peanut butter, banana and bacon

Cheddar and jalepeno bread with mexicana cheese

My favourite sandwich shop does a hog roast toastie which is slices of pork, apple sauce, and cheese served with a strip of crackling.

KirstenBlest · 13/01/2022 14:54

Another vote for peanut butter

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 13/01/2022 14:57

Oh I love a peanut butter and banana toasty even if it's the same temperature as lava!

Chicken, sweetcorn and cheese is good. I used to love a chicken and coleslaw panini (coleslaw cooked in the panini).

Really odd one but plain Philadelphia cheese, raspberry jam and bacon or ham is really good too.

AdaColeman · 13/01/2022 15:03

Avocado or guacamole with chopped bacon.

Sliced banana with maple syrup.

Leftover sausage sliced, with tomato.

Leftovers from roast dinner , especially roast pork, stuffing and apple sauce.

Colcannon, bacon or sausage and grated cheese.

iklboo · 13/01/2022 15:09

Pastrami, turkey breast, Swiss cheese, gherkin, yellow mustard & mayo

YY to Brie, bacon & cranberry

Croque Monsieur

Peanut butter & banana

Chicken, stuffing, mayo & cranberry

Sliced Mars Bar (don't ask - DS made one at scouts)

kuime · 13/01/2022 15:11

Do quesadillas work in a George Foreman? If so, I recommend black beans and sweet corn with added coriander, spring onion and chipotle paste, and lots of cheese. Optional avocado and jalapeños. Would prob work with non-tortilla bread too.

Also a layer of slow cooked leeks and thyme is a good addition to any cheese toastie.

Trisolaris · 13/01/2022 15:14

I grill some peppers, courgettes and halloumi with basil olive oil for a few minutes. Then put it in a toasted sandwich with some Nandos sauce. Delicious!

aibutohavethisusername · 13/01/2022 15:17

Blue cheese & apple
