London fireworks

I thought the fireworks were amazing but was confused half the time with what was going on. It felt a bit all over the place - nevertheless I still enjoyed it but was just wondering if it was me that found it confusing?

@HeronLanyon

Really didn’t like the drones flat and disconnected and didn’t sit well with the beautiful fireworks. Really think there should just be fireworks !! Didn’t understand the choir/ABBA segments and no info even if who the choir was and why ABBA etc. Greenwich looked lovely. Was incredibly disjointed. Fireworks beautiful when they were visible. Hmmm
I thought nthe fireworks worked well with the drones.

Like when they were doing the foot ball bit, the fireworks zoomed along the ground (like a ball had been kicked) straight to the drones, then the cheers happened, and the drones turned into the lion head and then the fireworks popped in the sky.

It was amazing!

Maybe people only saw the poor sky news cover?

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 01/01/2022 08:35

I thought it was awful.

It worked great in previous years when Big Ben went seamlessly into a spectacular fireworks display.

Interrupting it with crappy poems, crappy singing and someone else's idea of what I should be looking forward to in 2022 (it would be a nope! for most of it) is absolute pants.

Like so many things - if it ain't broke, break it.

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 01/01/2022 08:35

I was watching on BBC1

burnoutbabe · 01/01/2022 08:44

I watched on itv. You saw the shard light up and that was it! So turned off and went to sleep!

itsgettingweird · 01/01/2022 08:45

I fell asleep .

Ds (17) managed to stay awake and watch them.

He said it wasn't worth it and it was mostly just drones showing odd angles of fireworks all over London.

He said there was about a few good minutes where they played music

Mollysocks · 01/01/2022 09:25

@Lindy2

I like the drones. The fireworks seem so loud and harsh compared to what the drones can do now.

The words were a bit too try hard at times IMO but I still enjoyed it.

Yes I said they just look dated now, a bit old hat. The drones are much better.
AChickenCalledDaal · 01/01/2022 09:37

We decided the choir were there to sing Auld Lang Syne but had cut a deal that they could sing their favourite ABBA medley, too.

I think the interaction between drones and fireworks was probably technically very impressive. But the music and commentary was disjointed and a bit confusing.

Big Ben bongs made me well up a bit - nice to see it restored and back in action.

LoopyGremlin · 01/01/2022 09:41

@TitsInAbsentia

Watched the Scottish fireworks on tv as usual - they were amazing! Had a feeling the London ones would be crap, although sounds like I missed some comedy Grin
That must have been from a previous year. There were no organised fireworks in Edinburgh last night. Everything was cancelled.
kickupafuss · 01/01/2022 09:45

@Fairunibutterfly

Yep me too. Oh said he thought they’d be toned down this year but it didn’t look like it was. It was a shame as with the climate emergency I thought doing a light show with limited fireworks would have given a great message.

I liked the intro and choir but Not sure why they sang ABBA. I don’t know why there was a welcome message. The train stops at the end were a good idea but didn’t seem logical, first stop the earth, can’t remember 2nd, third stop NYE…

The second language used in the welcome message was in Farsi - I thought it was maybe a reference the people coming from Afghanistan?
Yuledo · 01/01/2022 09:45

I thought it was better than usual. I get bored by more and more fireworks, no matter how flashy.

EasterIssland · 01/01/2022 09:45

@geojellyfish

It was awful! I liked the fireworks themselves and the drones are impressive, but there was too much going on, competing for attention. And I didn't understand why they cut away to the choir mid-display.

I loved it last year; tonight's missed the mark.

Same feeling here Loves 2021 display

Yesterdays ? What was going on ? No idea.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 01/01/2022 09:50

Yeah last year's defiantly flowed a bit better from what remember. This one...it was nice but a bit odd. Think just drones been better there was to much going on at once. The choir...much as love a Abba medley. What was that about lol

SlowBoiledFrog · 01/01/2022 09:51

thought I had tuned into a Nationwide advert Grin

I also thought it was awful, disjointed, cringey.

ineedsun · 01/01/2022 09:56

I thought it was terrible in comparison to previous years.

Very disjointed, like there were distinct sections throughout rather than a sense of continuity. The section on sport was just odd, why was a random choir singing an Abba medley in the Globe theatre? If you’re at the globe, have people quoting Shakespeare for goodness sake. They need a decent DJ to manage the whole thing next time.

BewareTheRedNosedDragon · 01/01/2022 10:01

ABBA was utterly random but I found it weirdly moving. I quite liked them all in all.

MsTimTam · 01/01/2022 10:03

@LoopyGremlin the Scottish fireworks were from the Wallace Monument in Stirling.

LoopyGremlin · 01/01/2022 10:05
@LoopyGremlin the Scottish fireworks were from the Wallace Monument in Stirling.
I didn’t know that. I would have watched!

MsTimTam · 01/01/2022 10:17

When they started we were v confused! Thought we'd get the piper for the countdown and then BBC would cut to London fireworks as none in Edinburgh. Was very surprised when fireworks started, took us a second to figure out where they were coming from.

Hugoslavia · 01/01/2022 10:20

I've just watched it, expecting to hate it, and I thought that it was fantastic! It was so refreshing. I loved the poetry at the start. The drones were incredible. The choir was great, although admittedly a strange choice of songs, but then there were other international songs played. I'm no fan of modern pop music and usually don't like change, but I just really enjoyed this for some reason.

catwomandoo · 01/01/2022 10:22

I think the ABBA thing was because it was the West End choir, and the association with Mamma Mia , the musical?

I thought they were fab, and done well considering they were over several locations.

Am really enjoying the Sky news cock up Grin

lollipoprainbow · 01/01/2022 10:22

Really miss when they used to cut to Big Ben for the chimes and countdown to midnight it gave a real sense of excitement, it was an anti climax last night, the music for the fireworks was shit too!!

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 01/01/2022 10:23

Hated the poetry and whilst I loved the choir I didn't love them IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIREWORKS!!
The fireworks themselves were great but the cutting to this and that and back again was just annoying!
What I want - massive fireworks to a fantastic soundtrack and entertainment - poetry, choir whatever Before and after NOT DURING!!

Mollysocks · 01/01/2022 10:24

Did we miss Auld Lang Syne being sung, I can’t remember it at all.

trydry22 · 01/01/2022 10:24

I've just watched it online, having read this thread I thought I'd have a look. I actually think it was very good and well thought out. More moving with the times and technology.

mydogisthebest · 01/01/2022 10:29

I didn't like the choir. Why Abba songs? The rest though I thought was brilliant.

So many miseries. I bet the miseries would never be happy no matter how great the fireworks were or how much were spent on them. Always got to be cynical
