London fireworks

I thought the fireworks were amazing but was confused half the time with what was going on. It felt a bit all over the place - nevertheless I still enjoyed it but was just wondering if it was me that found it confusing?

Another misery guts here - it felt really underwhelming and a bit amateurish. Drones were good though!

givethatbabyaname · 01/01/2022 01:25

HNY everyone 🎉🥂

Yes confused and confusing. Drones are definitely the way forward though. Fireworks look so 20th century!

And WTF to ABBA in the Globe?? Sacrilege!

Britain has so much it can be proud of, this NYE celebration didn’t do it justice.

ForgedInFire · 01/01/2022 01:30

Maybe I'm a miseryguts but I am so over the voiceover recapping the year as the fireworks go off. It is supposed to be a visual display imo

bluebell34567 · 01/01/2022 01:31

who put ABBA there? and why?

user1471448866 · 01/01/2022 01:32

Just shows how different people’s views are. Absolutely loved it (and I am one of the miserly guts who normally think it a complete waste of money) Thought the choir and poetry really added a new dimension and stood out from the usual who can spend the most on fireworks this year show. Hope will encourage everyone to move away from just ever longer and more expensive firework displays into something more imaginative

LBOCS2 · 01/01/2022 01:36

I thought the fireworks and the Beeb's coverage of them were very good, and I loved the drones. I was a bit confused though, as I didn't think there were supposed to be fireworks at all this evening so we weren't expecting them!

Nesbo · 01/01/2022 01:36

I thought they looked amazing. Maybe some people were watching a different display

Silverswirl · 01/01/2022 01:37

Can’t stand all the annoying cringy crap talking over the music.
The best part of fireworks is how they fit into the music for me and what the mix of the music is saying.
Music was disjointed and shit this year.
Don’t want to hear some annoying voice blocking it all out! Also didn’t want to but away to the globe theatre. Although the choir were interesting to listen to (and I liked the auld Lang’s aye bit) it didn’t need to but from the fireworks to random ABBA songs just then

Mummytotwonow · 01/01/2022 01:37

If anyone can’t sleep and is bored like me, take a look at Twitter as #londonfireworks is trending and there are some hilarious posts Grin

I just watched the local ones, stood out in the street and enjoyed all the barrage boxes going off in neighbours' gardens.
It's tiresome enough being at home by myself, but if I ever actually watch new year fireworks on the fucking telly, you can probably nail the lid down now.

OneLlamaOpenSleigh · 01/01/2022 01:43

The poem at the start was awful.

I think the ABBA thing might have been looking forward to 2022?

Very disjointed, though. Wish they’d just stuck to the lights.

HeronLanyon · 01/01/2022 01:48

Really didn’t like the drones flat and disconnected and didn’t sit well with the beautiful fireworks. Really think there should just be fireworks !!
Didn’t understand the choir/ABBA segments and no info even if who the choir was and why ABBA etc.
Greenwich looked lovely.
Was incredibly disjointed.
Fireworks beautiful when they were visible.
Hmmm

HeronLanyon · 01/01/2022 01:52

Op yes Twitter. Dp and I have been weeping with laughter at comments and gifs.

Seemslikeagoodidea · 01/01/2022 01:56

It was a bit disjointed, but the drone light displays were impressive and perhaps reduced the amount spent on fireworks. Cutting away to the choir was a bit strange and I'm not sure why they sang a medley of Abba songs - I like Abba but it seemed an odd choice. Ah well, they made an effort and perhaps there was something to please most people (although not all the people, all of the time - which would be impossible).

1dayatatime · 01/01/2022 01:59

So it started with an awful poem that left me thinking hurry up I want to see the fire works.

Then things get better as the fireworks start with some good backing tracks . Then randomly we switch to the Globe theatre for choir singing ABBA leaving me thinking WTF.

OK we then switch back to fireworks and backing music , I'm happy now we are back to normality but oh no we have to go back to the Globe for more ABBA, I I am now thinking what is going on here.

Then finally finishing off with fire works and music. The drones were a nice addition but detracted from the fire works.

Without doubt the weirdest and worst London New Year's Eve fireworks display.

There is a simple formula- spend a bunch of money chucking lots of big fireworks up in the air with some really great backing music. I just wished they followed the simple formula.

80sMum · 01/01/2022 02:00

It wasn't anywhere near as good as last year's.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 01/01/2022 02:06

The SKY cock up was comedy gold

JeffThePilot · 01/01/2022 02:38

I watched some of it on bbc, tuned in just before midnight.

I liked the drones. I imagine in a decade, we won’t have traditional fireworks at all.

The choir though, wtf were they thinking, it was like they got Linda from the local am dram society to get her ladies to do a bit of a sing song.

gogohm · 01/01/2022 02:46

Bit underwhelmed, didn't get the need for underground stations??? Droned good though.

DockOTheBay · 01/01/2022 06:13

I thought the dinner thing was cook. No idea why we had to watch a choir though

ShirleyPhallus · 01/01/2022 07:29

Two things I hate:

  • earnest poetry
  • earnest choirs

I thought I’d tuned in to a nationwide advert. Awful.

Cole52 · 01/01/2022 07:29

SKY NEWS WHAT A TOTAL LET DOWN...
1st year we let our 9 and a half year old stay up to see in the new year with us.
Waited with baited breath at 12 midnight for the fireworks....and waited....and waited...
Even the crew could be heard in the background wondering "is that it".
TOTAL MESS UP GUYS...
Oh well maybe next year..quick flick over to BBC NEWS ..wow fireworks going off, drones lit .mmmm think you missed something SKY...
HAPPY NEW YEAR GUYS

Jabbawasarollingstone · 01/01/2022 07:36

I think London tries too hard to be edgy. Why do we have to link it to things? It's overcomplicated. I limed it better when we just blew rockets up into the sky.

Jabbawasarollingstone · 01/01/2022 07:36

*liked not limed

TitsInAbsentia · 01/01/2022 07:56

Watched the Scottish fireworks on tv as usual - they were amazing!
Had a feeling the London ones would be crap, although sounds like I missed some comedy Grin
