Encanto

Yesterday we watched Encanto on Disney +. Three out of four loved it, the other hated it. Personally I thought it was one of the weakest Disney movies I've seen (althoughI didn'tsay it and faked well!!)- the storyline was weak, the music sounded that little bit off and the ending wasn't great. I don't know, I think I'm just annoyed that because something is advertised/pushed and trending we always jump for it. Family movie time is so limited and we could have been watching something 10 times better! Has anyone else seen it? Do I just have really bad taste?

Granny here. Admittedly only came in half way through but couldn't make head or tail of it and as mother of 7 have been through a lot of Disney in my time. Pile of Poo.

I read the last 3 chapters of Little Women. Didn't get it, thought it were shit.

We loved it - saw it in the cinema (which we don't usually do), not sure I would have been so absorbed otherwise. But the colour and detail on the big screen was a joy. And I've had The Family Madrigal stuck in my head for weeks.

Seems to me it's a film that rewards repeat viewing and I love the analysis on here. The Family Madrigal is so uptempo and sets so much exposition it is hard to take in at first so I can see it might be a turn off. But once you've watched and know who's who it makes more sense. A strange choice to kick things off in some ways - loved the observation about it being a different rhythm to the family's other songs.

I actually didn't know LMM was involved but definitely guessed before the end Grin

@Snoozeee

We watched it and it wasn't great. The buzz for it to be released on Christmas Eve had such a big hype but was pretty disappointed.

Ron's Gone Wrong was really good - another new Disney film but wasn't advertised! Highly recommend!

Yes I thought Ron was fantastic, I really enjoyed it.
Thatsplentyjack · 03/01/2022 12:00

I haven't seen it but after watching the full trailer, I did think it was lacking an actually storyline. Couldn't actually figure out what it was about so haven't bothered to watch it.

8dpwoah · 03/01/2022 12:14

We watched Ron's gone wrong the other day too and thought it far more entertaining, we've already watched it again.

Enjoying the analysis of Encanto on this thread though, it might warrant a second watch on that basis!

Beachbreak2411 · 03/01/2022 12:33

My daughter loves it! I’ve not really paid attention while it’s on but she really wants to go to the cinema to watch it too! I can’t bring myself to pay out for something we can watch for free at home!!

DoleWhipFloat · 03/01/2022 12:53

It’s rubbish.

RiskyCookie · 03/01/2022 13:10

Haven't seen it but DC have all watched it and enjoyed it.

But if I hear that Bruno song one more time....

shivbo2014 · 03/01/2022 13:18

I thought it was a bit rubbish! It felt like a bit of a rip off of Moana which I loved. My favourite Disney film in recent years is Raya and the Last Dragon.

Bunnycat101 · 04/01/2022 14:34

I liked it and my 5yo is obsessed. Not so many standout songs though but lots of quite catchy background music I felt.

Plumedenom · 05/01/2022 00:13

I have to continue to disagree with a lot of people on here!! I'm looking at the comments under the songs on YouTube and it is full of fully grown Latin American men saying how they cried in the cinema at "Dos Origuitas"and who say it is a very moving and essential rendering of the Colombian story of displacement and violence. I think a lot of people on these boards perhaps don't understand (or maybe just don't care) about the significance of the sub plot. This is the real story of a country, it's only part magical fairy tale. Anyway, I'll stop now as it's just Disney, but you know, I don't think it can go in the same league as some of the stuff churned out recently. Also, if it reminds you of Moana, that's probably because it shares the same song writer.

MaryAndHerNet · 05/01/2022 00:41

"Dos Origuitas"

I love that song. Tear up at that part every time I watch the movie.
I don't get the comparison with Moana at all, 2 films are completely different.

GattoFantastico · 05/01/2022 04:10

@Plumedenom you've expressed exactly what I feel perfectly! After watching Encanto, I read up about how it's been received and embraced in Colombia. So many past Disney animations have been been superficial and clumsy attempts to portray different cultures. Encanto is in a different league.

Footprintsinthegrass · 05/01/2022 06:43

My dds have watched it 3 times this week. They love it! I haven't had a chance to watch the whole thing so I'm a bit confused but dds and dh love the music

it is better in the cinema though! Like Frozen, there is a lot more visual impact when you can see all the detail.
Shoobydooer · 05/01/2022 12:43

Yes FreeFrenchHens, I said the same earlier. We don't often go to the cinema as a family and seeing it on the big screen was delightful, really made a difference to my enjoyment of it.

Legoisthebest · 06/01/2022 12:51

Having now watched Encanto about 5 billion times I am now at the over analysing stage.
So....they are the Family Madrigal. But do Columbian women usually take their husbands surname when they marry? Surely Mirabel's Mum and Aunty Pepa would be Mrs Whatever their husbands surname would be and Mirabel and her sisters and cousins wouldn't be Madrigals. Only Abuela Alma and Bruno should be Madrigals surely....

MaryAndHerNet · 06/01/2022 13:08

Only Abuela Alma and Bruno should be Madrigals surely....

Way I figure it, Abuela Alma is the matriarch of the family and the whole village, so is like the chief, those 2 guys married into the 'Ruling' family so took the ruling name...

Or the women had both surnames but only madrigal is mentioned in the movie..

Legoisthebest · 06/01/2022 13:35

Mary a bit like Prince Phillip became 'Mr Mountbatten Windsor' rather than the Queen becoming just 'Mrs Mountbatten' Grin
The fact I was thinking about this means I am definitely at the Watched It Too Many Times Stage.
Going to get the Lego set of the Madrigal House on Saturday. So excited.
Already have the cuddly capybara. He is so soft and snuggly.

Encanto
Whitefire · 06/01/2022 18:28

I watched it again today, as per a different thread I watched it this time with subtitles which did help a lot. It did seem a bit better but I still think it kind of ended in a very rushed manner, which was a shame.

doadeer · 06/01/2022 18:33

It was great to see characters who looked like my little boy. Loved the diversity and inclusion of it. Haven't seen the end yet as we've watched first half 4x so far 🤣

Bunnycat101 · 07/01/2022 19:02

I think it’s a grower. We’ve just been listening to the sound track and the music is enjoyable to have on and I was surprised how much my 5yo has picked up.

LadyCleathStuart · 07/01/2022 19:08

Both my DC loved it and my DS isn't usually a fan of musicals. We have watched it about five times over the holidays and I cannot stop singing 'We don't talk about Bruno'!

BiscuitLover3678 · 07/01/2022 19:13

It was sweet and I liked the messaging and the fact it was set in Colombia (and they actually had diverse characters). Agree the story itself was a tad weak and I’m a bit confused by the end.
