Encanto

Yesterday we watched Encanto on Disney +. Three out of four loved it, the other hated it. Personally I thought it was one of the weakest Disney movies I've seen (althoughI didn'tsay it and faked well!!)- the storyline was weak, the music sounded that little bit off and the ending wasn't great. I don't know, I think I'm just annoyed that because something is advertised/pushed and trending we always jump for it. Family movie time is so limited and we could have been watching something 10 times better! Has anyone else seen it? Do I just have really bad taste?

We (me, DH, DDs aged 5 and 7) really liked it! Horses for courses I guess but it was a big hit in our house.

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 27/12/2021 08:52

Has anyone seen Elves on Netflix? Wondering how scary it is & if it might be ok for kids (age 10 & 12)?

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 27/12/2021 08:53

Where can we watch A Boy Called Christmas?

I really loved it too. A tad bit too long but I thought it was fun and the graphics were great.

chalkyc2 · 27/12/2021 08:56

@HoliHormonalTigerlilly on Netflix and sky I think.

Bunce1 · 27/12/2021 09:00

It didn’t make any sense. The songs were rubbish and the story was full of holes.

Rubbish.

DoThePropeller · 27/12/2021 09:07

We enjoyed too, songs been on a loop ever since!

moleeye · 27/12/2021 09:09

Thought it was rubbish, and the 7 year old wasn't impressed either.

Poor storyline and the songs were too fast.

I don't get the Lin Manuel hype, it's all samey samey.

RosieLemonade · 27/12/2021 09:10

I quite liked the music. Very LMM though. The story didn't have much depth though.

Xmasprrssiehelp · 27/12/2021 09:10

The trailer made it look much more exciting than it was - we felt a bit let down afterwards, all the best bits where on the trailer and there where far too many songs for my DS....

WoodenReindeer · 27/12/2021 09:11

Hamilton was Good though! I am amazed anyone liked this. It was just visual wallpaper. No depth, no real story, no real sense!

It could have been so much more!

Beautiful3 · 27/12/2021 09:13

Agreed. Disappointing ending, it didn't make sense.

HelpINeeedSomebody · 27/12/2021 09:14

We enjoyed it. Think it was because I went the cinema with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised.

Definitely not one of Disney's best but I haven't loved a new Disney film since Moana.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 27/12/2021 09:15

Glad it wasn't just us that was disappointed. We sat down to watch it together on Christmas Day but like Return of Mary Poppins, it seemed to be all about busy colourful visuals but we couldn't remember a single song about 2 minutes after the credits.

Robinkitty · 27/12/2021 09:21

I watched it in the cinema and can’t remember the ending as I switched off. Songs were rubbish. I liked the main girls dress and that was about it.

flashpaper · 27/12/2021 09:21

It was alright, I agree with others who say it was just another Luca, Soul, and Onward. I loved Coco though, I think that was the last good disney film.

TravellingSpoon · 27/12/2021 09:30

Surely if the candle was a miracle it might have helped if it came before the Husband was killed?

And in the bit where the Grandma retells her story, they are walking so slowly but still at the head of the pack, so why didnt they just hurry, or hide?

Loveitloveitloveit · 27/12/2021 09:41

I liked encanto Blush but tbh I wasn’t a moana fan. Loved the songs but thought the story was a bit meh

GunsNShips · 27/12/2021 09:41

Well it went down a treat with all 4 generations in my parents house yesterday! I did like the songs and underneath all the magic they are just a typical dysfunctional
family

MaryAndHerNet · 27/12/2021 09:49

Fantastic film.
Solid 8/10 with music on par with most other Disney films.

The change up of the Disney formula and switching from Princess Vs Villain on a grand quest made it even more special. they focussed on the way the elders treat the younger and pressure felt by those younger ones to live up to expectations etc. Speaks to a lot of younger people in bigger families.
The way Abuela turns her back on Mirabel, how Mirabel helps Luisa to realise she needs to let go of some of her burden etc.
Bruno being ousted by Abuela and the family as the black sheep and the causer of doom when in reality he only saw what could come. Mirabelle being Abuella replacement and the themes of elders being replaced and the fear the elder may feel from that. Etc
And that before even getting into the sub story of of the grandmother and the beautiful Dos Oruguitas section.
Astounding really. Most Disney films are puddle deep, Encanto is an ocean.

Rockbird · 27/12/2021 09:50

9yo watched it herself and really liked it. Me and the 13yo started watching and turned it off after about 15 mins. Couldn't make head nor tail of it and weren't bothered enough to try.

Mumoblue · 27/12/2021 09:55

I loved it. I’ve watched it twice already. I enjoyed the theme of intergenerational trauma and healing. I also enjoyed most of the songs. Luisa’s song made me think of my eldest sister, who essentially raised me and my siblings.

Whitefire · 27/12/2021 09:56

We watched it too. It just never really got going and when a story came it just ended. Almost as if the important bits ended up on the cutting room floor.

Plumedenom · 27/12/2021 09:57

I'm not reading the comments first. I thought it was the best Disney film I've seen. I watched it last night too. I actually dreamed about the doors and the locks last night. The song with the big sister is a brilliant breakthrough Disney song. The Bruno song is really catchy too. The message is wonderful, that we are more than our gifts. It's deep I think and the lyrics are very clever.

Amrapaali · 27/12/2021 10:07

Stunning visuals and animation (was drooling over Mirabelle's skirt).

But the story was...I mean was there even a plot line? Much preferred Raya from last year.

I think Disney is relying too much on a single story: plucky heroine against the odds, takes on the menz or some authority figure, helped by magic and/or an animal familiar... it's all become too formulaic
