Encanto

Yesterday we watched Encanto on Disney +. Three out of four loved it, the other hated it. Personally I thought it was one of the weakest Disney movies I've seen (althoughI didn'tsay it and faked well!!)- the storyline was weak, the music sounded that little bit off and the ending wasn't great. I don't know, I think I'm just annoyed that because something is advertised/pushed and trending we always jump for it. Family movie time is so limited and we could have been watching something 10 times better! Has anyone else seen it? Do I just have really bad taste?

(Abuela actually has a door, but not a gift, but my post mixes the two.. sorry.. I'm sure you got the gist tho)

TheUsualChaos · 28/12/2021 21:34

DD saw it at the cinema with Brownies. She enjoyed it but wasn't raving about it. Can tell if she really enjoys something as she will tell me loads of bits about it. Just sounded like she zoned out a bit tbh.
I think Disney are becoming too much of a production line with their films...it's all quantity over quality now.

snapsieplopp · 28/12/2021 21:36

It was ok but the ending was a bit meh

Raya was better

CherryRedDMs · 28/12/2021 21:43

Interesting idea and completely wasted with the weak plot and music.

Hobbes8 · 28/12/2021 21:44

I thought the music was fab! More musical theatre than usual - lots of people singing counter melodies over each other like Tonight or something from Les Mis. I love that their lead character didn’t have a romantic story (like Brave or Moana).

riotlady · 28/12/2021 21:45

I loved it, music was great (loved Surface Pressure especially) and I actually liked that it was a gentler, more nuanced story without a major villain and the whole world at stake

godmum56 · 28/12/2021 21:46

I might have thought it was better if I hadn't seen Coco which was FABULOUS

riotlady · 28/12/2021 21:47

I also loved the character of Luisa, who is big and strong but not ugly or brutish like muscly women in kids media often are

Porfre · 28/12/2021 21:49

I tried watching this yesterday but found it really dull.
Switched off after about 15 minutes.

Might try again. From some of these comments it seems deeper than I gave it credit.

Apparently, Disney didn't want Luisa to be a big strong woman, the animators caught for her design. I loved her.

Big and strong, but not mocked or shunned for it. And she had the best song. 😁

annlee3817 · 28/12/2021 21:52

I loved it, DH thought it was weak, but DD and I really enjoyed it

Immunetypegoblin · 28/12/2021 22:00

I enjoyed it! The story, such as it is, is full of holes. I didn't mind that though, because it led to the opportunity to depict interesting concepts like Bruno's choice, the burden of strength, or the fact that people sometimes exert control for what they think are good reasons but later find they are holding on too tight and strangling what they love. My DS9 was quite saddened by Bruno in particular.

MajesticallyAwkward · 28/12/2021 22:05

I enjoyed it, wasn't amazing but LMM is a brilliant song writer and I liked the musical numbers.

The story was lacking, I get what they were going for but it fell short... a lot of build up with very little pay off.

Visually gorgeous, but it's not going to be a big hit.

Luca was similar- enjoyable but just missing something.

Raya and onward definitely had more of the Disney magic.

Atla · 28/12/2021 22:06

Me and the kids (9,8 & 5) enjoyed Encanto, it was pretty low key but sweet. I thought the songs were good - few plot holes, but it's a kids film.
I liked Luca more. Enjoyed Onward. Didn't really like Soul or Inside Out.

Atla · 28/12/2021 22:06

Raya was fab

We watched it last night on Disney+. I liked it. I got emotional towards then end when Mirabeau finally got her door.

It didn’t have the big Disney song like Frozen and Moana. I did find the first song too quick which was a shame as it was supposed to explain the family to us. The story was missing some explanation but other Disney movies don’t reveal everything (Frozen 1 - how does Elsa get her powers?). I agree also that some of the powers were a bit useless and felt that it was a bit much for Abuela who at first was grateful just to have a house for her babies later turned to needing more and more kids to keep the town believing in them and keep their family powerful.

It gave a nice message though that you don’t need magic powers to be the hero/heroine. My daughters asked why Mirabel didn’t get a door and as the film went on you saw she didn’t need one as she had everything she needed. You saw when the candle was dying and everyone started losing their powers that Mirabel was the only one who could get the candle without powers. I liked that the town came to help build the house and thought they’d be just a normal family at the end until the magic came back Grin

At the end of the day my 5 and 8yr olds enjoyed it and it kept me entertained for 90mins so nothing wrong with it! Not in the same league as Moana though and I thought Raya was better.

Wickywoo1984 · 28/12/2021 22:42

We saw it in the cinema last week and really liked it- not on par as Moana or Frozen but I felt it had a lovely storyline. Dc loved it. We watched it again on Disney yesterday with my dh and he enjoyed it too.

Meredusoleil · 28/12/2021 23:00

Loved this film. Great songs. Gorgeous colours and animation. Important message reacting to family.

Now where can I buy Mirabel's skirt from? 😉

Foolsrule · 28/12/2021 23:07

It was sweet and way better than the ridiculous A Boy Called Christmas. Now that was overrated!

CodenameEgg · 28/12/2021 23:28

It killed a couple of hours but I wasn’t hugely taken with it. The songs for the most part were forgettable other than ‘we don’t talk about Bruno’ and the storyline was very predictable, to the point where adult DS watched the trailer and guessed the entire plot. It was beautifully done though, the fabrics especially were wonderfully animated.

I enjoyed Luca, that made me laugh and was a bit different. Soul really bored me I’m afraid and I really enjoyed Onward, but that was probably more the stupidity of a walking pair of trousers.

I’m going to watch Ron’s Gone Wrong tomorrow, that looks promising in a Big Hero Six way.

GatoradeMeBitch · 28/12/2021 23:32

Mirabel and her glasses.

You may be right, and I shouldn't really go on a rant about a film I lost interest in watching, but why are her glasses a layer?

Does it mention why her mother doesn't heal her eyesight? It's not like it's a quirky aesthetic difference, she literally uses glasses to correct her sight. You'd think a healer would just heal it!

CodenameEgg · 28/12/2021 23:35

I’d did chuckle in the Bruno song though where you can see him grooving on the landing behind when they are singing.

GattoFantastico · 28/12/2021 23:39

Loved it. I think it goes way beyond many other Disney animations in terms of the themes, how it depicts family relationships, the Colombian cultural backdrop etc But I was watching with my adult dc- I can imagine some of the concepts would go over young children's heads. And the animation was just brilliant. Loved the strong sister picking up bunches of donkeys!

Mirabels glasses are signification of her different perspective on life and her family. Emphasized even more by her other clothes, everyone else in the family has a palette and design of their own. Bruno has an hourglass on his green clothes for example. Mirabels clothes are a mix of colours and feature a prominent butterfly... Butterflies are important..

Even more so, to highlight Mirabels different perspective and place in the famy, her song being 3/4 rythym as opposed to the other family members songs being in 4/4 rythym.
It's all to signify that Mirabel is just slightly out of synch with her family and sees things differently to them.
