It’s really cute. I love the name, haven’t heard it on a real person I don’t think just on baby boards and films.

It did make me laugh in the press conference when someone asked if he was changing his plans and he said something like ‘well as you would expect I’ll be working 24/7’ no mention of baby 😂

I really, really don't want to be impolite, but since Roman times, over 2000 years ago, throughout Europe many names based on the Latin word 'Rosa' have been pronounced with a long 'o' - as in 'Rose' today.
Rosemary is one of those names. So is Romy.

Of course, anyone can can call themselves anything. But the only Roman female name I can think of that is pronounced with a short o (as in Tommy) is the (quite unusual) Romola. And that's based on a Roman family name, not on the flower.

There are lots of Germanic names, such as Rosamund, Rosalind, Roswitha etc with a short 'o' (as in 'top') but they come from a very different origin, in which 'Hros' means 'horse'. Romy is not related to them at all.

I should add that whatever we thinkof Boris (and my opinions are not printable) in all humanity we should wish the baby well.

x2boys · 16/12/2021 18:49

@Skeumorph

Hardly Boris though is it? They're basically Carrie's babies, it's her name choices I'm sure. He probably got informed by whatsapp.

She clearly wanted babies, the marraige won't last past a certain point but she's getting the things she wants out of it - she has to have the babies now or it'll be too late.

I don't really think of them as Boris' children - he doesn't parent, he's like some strange sperm donor really.

Oh you know them personally do you ?
megletthesecond · 16/12/2021 19:25

Considering the man's an idiot, all his children have nice names.

Warmduscher · 16/12/2021 20:48

@Skeumorph

Yes I like Cassia best out of all the names.

Romy is nice. No, it's Romey not Rommie - I know one.

So do I and she pronounces it Rommy.

Fascinating stuff. However my friends DD pronounces her name Rommy.
IpanemaPeaHen · 16/12/2021 20:58

The only Romy I know is my German SIL. Pronounced Rhomee with quite a harsh/strong Ro sound.

Nice name.

SellFridges · 16/12/2021 21:00

We have a Romilly who we always thought would be Romy. She’s actually usually known as Rom. Which I am now grateful for!

Cool name. Love Romy and Michelle. Great movie.

DS2 would have been Romilly NN Romy if he were a girl.

Skeumorph · 16/12/2021 22:42

Does she also have a Yvonne, pronounced Why-Von-ee?

It's wrong, as explained above.

What a deeply unpleasant thing to say about a young family/ new parents. So dismissive of any emotions the couple have towards each other. You're basically saying Boris is in it for the sex and Carrie for the babies. Nasty.

And before anyone jumps on me: I can't stand Boris and I hate the name Romy.

smurfsss · 16/12/2021 22:58

Oh I love Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion!

You aren’t impolite at all!!! Both the Romy’s (that rhyme with Tommy) I know are French. But now you make me doubt my ears. I’ll listen carefully and come back to you ….
thirddayout · 17/12/2021 20:58

They are names which I hope as the child grows up she will not have to correct any mis-spelling by others very often.

The child's name is the least of the issues she will have to face. I can imagine when she starts school protection from unpleasant name calling or worse may sadly be necessary. There will be some people who will try to project their understandable hatred for her father by proxy via their child.

very888 · 17/12/2021 21:04

Horrible of anyone to pick on a child because of who their parents are. However she'll most likely go to a school where all the kids parents are from the same circles as Boris and Carrie. She's not likely to to go to be at the local comp. it's a lovely name I'm sure she'll be fine.

IsadoraQuagmire · 17/12/2021 21:07

@BorsetshireBanality

Maybe one or both of them is a fan of Spiral” (Laure’s baby)
I immediately thought of Laure too.
Mynameis25 · 17/12/2021 21:17

I'm a Romy and while not delighted with the association I am very pleased it may lead to more people knowing how to pronounce my name! (Roh-mee, though I answer to Rommy too as the mispronunciation is so common I've grown bored of correcting it).

Oneforthemoneytwo · 17/12/2021 21:22

Absolutely love it. I knew a Romy when I was at school and it always struck me as a beautiful name, unusual but not out there

ancientgran · 17/12/2021 21:27

Made me think of Romy Schneider the German actress. Probably before your time for most of you but I'm old. Maybe it's a German name?

NuffSaidSam · 17/12/2021 21:34

Just makes me think of 'I'm Romy and I'm an alcoholic' from Romy and Michelle.

I think it's a dreadful name.

Great film though.

RobertaFirmino · 18/12/2021 00:30

I do hope little Romy takes after her mother in the looks department.

madisonbridges · 18/12/2021 00:43
