Shops that have 'a smell'

What shops do you find have a smell that's definitely their own?

Every Next I've ever been to in the UK (South), always smells the exact same. I just walk in and even if blindfolded id tell you I was in Next

It's the same with Lush but then that's self explanatory given all the smellies in there Grin

Also remember that Oasis (RIP) started scenting their shops really heavily before they went. It used to set my asthma off. Really miss the brand though!

Morrissons also has a distinctive smell that is unlike any of it's competitors. A mix of bread and fish.

I’ll add rotting vegetables to that.
It’s vile.

GREGGS obviously smells of sausage rolls.

Wetherspoons pubs all smell the same. Stale beer and fried food.

I often drive past a branch of Travis Perkins, the builders’ merchants. The new timber is stacked up next to the road and it smells divine, I always wind the window down to get the full benefit.

Shoe shops.
Leathery smell first remembered from Clark’s shops when I was young.

NinaDefoe · 01/12/2021 20:55

Pizza Express has a slightly sweet smell.

HelplesslyHoping · 01/12/2021 21:00

My bank smells like hoover smell and aftershave. Waitrose used to smell like leather and new car. Haven't been in without a mask in 2 years so I hope it smells the same.

HMV and Game stank of BO and plastic

Liberty has this wonderful wood smell , obviously! .

So lovely

AliceA2021 · 01/12/2021 21:12

I hate the smell of Lush. I cannot go in and walking by is awful, smells so chemically and makes me cough.

ClaudiaJ1 · 01/12/2021 21:12

The Body Shop. McDonalds and KFC, obviously.

The old village chemist from when I was a child smelled very distinctive. I realised later it was a mix of sheep dip and Yardley.
Probably the two strongest smells in there as they sold everything. Must've been a veterinary chemist. I can remember the smell but would love to smell it again.

Blackwidow47 · 01/12/2021 21:19

Ooh I’m a Premier Inn smell fanatic, I swear I could identify it anywhere.

Lush on the other hand makes me 🤮 and induces a migraine.

winniesanderson · 01/12/2021 21:24

QS or was it q&s? One of the only clothes shops in my tiny town at the time and everything smelt oddly of cardboard.

meow1989 · 01/12/2021 21:39

Old pubs always smell like beer and chips to me, I really like that smell Blush

Hollister always smelt amazing when I was young enough to frequent!

I like the lush smell.

When we go to North Wales (as often as possible) we pass the Roberts bread factory in Northwich - we wind the windows down to get the most smell as possible. They are next to traffic lights and we're always pleased if they're on red.Smile

@Fetchthevet

My local Iceland smells of BO and fart.
Shock
newtb · 01/12/2021 21:51

I used to love the smell of our chandlers. Linseed oil mixed with brass polish and duraglit. I remember being sent to but oxalic acid when I was a kid.
I absolutely hate the smell of the men's shoe aisle in Carrefour, it's a very powerful synthetic sole and liner smell, like thé dressing on synthetic fabrics. Makes my head spin. Thinking about it, they seem to have changed thé layout in my local one and you no longer have to walk the gauntlet of shoes each side above head height. Maybe someone complained. Or threw up.

BertieBotts · 01/12/2021 21:59

UK supermarkets all smell the same. Definitely different to European ones. I live abroad now and I get all emotional when we go into a supermarket at home because I miss them so much Blush

There is a smell that hangs around communal living spaces. Student halls always have it, sometimes cheap chain hotels as well and the hallways of new build flats. I can't describe it but maybe somebody knows what I mean. It's a bit carpety and maybe stale air?

One of the local Tescos smells really strongly of raw sewage when it rains, I can't shop there as the smell is unbearable some days.
PickAChew · 02/12/2021 00:04

Our coop smells of cabbage, stale Costa coffee and manky floor mop.

PickAChew · 02/12/2021 00:05

And The Tesco on Clayton Street in Newcastle has the heady scent of piss and sour milk.

CeratopsofthePharoahs · 02/12/2021 07:30

Our local Lidl has a really sour smell by the door as you go in.
Hobbycraft always smells of PVA.
