Shops that have 'a smell'

What shops do you find have a smell that's definitely their own?

Every Next I've ever been to in the UK (South), always smells the exact same. I just walk in and even if blindfolded id tell you I was in Next

It's the same with Lush but then that's self explanatory given all the smellies in there Grin

I agree about the Co op smell.

mewkins · 01/12/2021 17:40

@ThisWormHasTurned

All HMVs used to smell of mustiness and B.O
This is very true. And kind of like rubber tyres.
mnp321 · 01/12/2021 17:41

The White Company. It's a dangerous nectar that convinces you to buy their not very cheap candles and diffusers.

BertieBotts · 01/12/2021 17:44

I used to work at CEX, it smelled of people's damp musty houses (from the stuff people traded in), utter unwashed horror (from the customers) and stale cigarette smoke (from both).

You got used to it after a while Envy

I'm craving the smell of carpet shops and sports equipment shops now.

I hate the smell of Next Home.

School uniform shops always smell the same.

Softwonder · 01/12/2021 17:51

Our tiny village post office / shop has a smell of the 70s about it. Kind of like old lino, newspaper and escaped CFC gas from the ancient fridges.

LadyCatStark · 01/12/2021 17:53

European supermarkets have a distinctive smell, the same as the smell of the supermarkets in Saudi Arabia where I lived as a child.

Vermontfoliage · 01/12/2021 17:54

Sports direct 🤮

Makinglists · 01/12/2021 17:54

Bhs always had the same smell - like playdoh. I thought it was just the store in Bournemouth but when I moved away the local store smelt the same.

Igloo71 · 01/12/2021 17:56

Booths in the 80s in the tea and coffee aisle by the coffee grinder. I grind my own beans at home, but it still doesn’t smell like the beans in Booths of 40 years ago!

CloudyStorms · 01/12/2021 17:56

Waterstones

European supermarkets have a distinctive smell

I agree. Eau de Carrefour.

BarefootHippieChick · 01/12/2021 18:04

Charity shops. It always takes at least 2 washes to get that musty smell out.

Justleaveitblankthen · 01/12/2021 18:04

I love walking into my larger Home and Bargains store.
I immediately relax into the smell of all the laundry/cleaning/body and hair products and know I'll be in there a while Smile

MuggleStudiesResearchProject · 01/12/2021 18:05

LA Senza was always lovely, and then they'd put the little wax beads in with your new undies to make it last even longer.

Mochudubh · 01/12/2021 18:08

I hate the smell of Lush, I have to hold my breath for at least 2 shops either side. I once made the mistake of booking an appointment in the opticians next door. The smell was revolting and I've never been back. I asked the optician how they could stand it and they said they'd stopped noticing it.

Gertie75 · 01/12/2021 18:17

Aldi smells dirty

VirgilStarkwell · 01/12/2021 18:19

Independent health food shops smell all herbal and lovely. (Holland and Barrett is not the same; too clinical.)

Hippie shops that sell colourful pebbles, gypsy skirts and joss sticks. Patchouli. Zen.

Hardware shops in seaside towns, that sell everything, including wetsuits and flip flops and buckets and spades. The smell of rubber. Makes me want an ice cream with sand on it.

pinkcattydude · 01/12/2021 18:20

Next and others use scenting they have the scent pumped in

YukoandHiro · 01/12/2021 18:22

WH Smith. I worked in a branch as a teenager and I can tell it anywhere

GrealishHairband · 01/12/2021 18:30

Now this is pretty niche but I love the smell of the reception area of any Hub by Premier Inn. They don’t sell it unfortunately. I have asked 👀😂

GrealishHairband · 01/12/2021 18:31

And European supermarkets yes! They all smell very strongly of whiffy cheese.

Cheetosyummy · 01/12/2021 18:32

Yep European especially east Europe supermarkets smells very distinctive.
Similar to Lidl or any east European shop over in U.K.

BumBurnerBum · 01/12/2021 18:35

WH Smiths. How do they achieve it?

Coop also and I hate it.

Scarby9 · 01/12/2021 18:36

Every National Trust shop smells the same - pot pourri? And wool?
