Shops that have 'a smell'

What shops do you find have a smell that's definitely their own?

Every Next I've ever been to in the UK (South), always smells the exact same. I just walk in and even if blindfolded id tell you I was in Next

It's the same with Lush but then that's self explanatory given all the smellies in there Grin

I always thought Aldi and possibly moreso Lidl have a very distinctive smell to them. I thought it was just me!

TerribleCustomerCervix · 01/12/2021 18:40

Those shops that have a deliberate signature scent- does anyone know how they pump the smell in? How is it so intense and thought the whole store?

tulips27 · 01/12/2021 18:41

This sounds absolutely crazy but I feel like I can smell the tiles!

EyesAsGreenAsAFreshPickledToad · 01/12/2021 18:43

The Subway stink. It can make you gag from across the street.

Mum2jenny · 01/12/2021 18:43

I struggle to even walk past Lush. The smell is overpowering and I just couldn’t go in under any circumstance. It is a pity as I do like the kind of products they sell, but the smell…….just no can do!!

pinkcattydude · 01/12/2021 18:45

@TerribleCustomerCervix. It’s through either scenting machines or the ac if you are interested this is that one company that does it www.ambius.co.uk/scenting/scenting/how-does-it-work/

Stravidarius smells revolting 🤢 I've only a managed to go in twice but have left soon after entering. Smells very heavily perfumed, perhaps on purpose? Gives me a headache.

Curbaisti · 01/12/2021 18:46

Mamas and Papas. Gorgegous

MrsFoxyplease · 01/12/2021 18:47

M&S Food Halls are very distinctive. My dc refuse to go in. It makes them feel ill.
Poundstretcher always smells like an old warehouse (and are always freezing cold- hence the fleece jacket the staff always wear).
Morrissons also has a distinctive smell that is unlike any of it's competitors. A mix of bread and fish.
Savers always smells of cheap air freshener. Usually citrus.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 01/12/2021 18:48

The White Company smells glorious all of the time but as I walked by today it smelled so wonderfully of Christmas-think it is their pine scent.
Makes me happy!!!!

Nothing quite like the smell of new books when you walk into Waterstones! I love it

wiklowarrior · 01/12/2021 18:49

@catinboots123

When I was pregnant with Ds1 I used to go into carpet shops and sniff the samples. It was my craving. Divine.

When pregnant, and when not pregnant, I crave chewing on new carpets GrinBlush

Gosh. I miss being able to smell. Thanks COVID. I loved the smell of bookshops.

StormyCornishSeas · 01/12/2021 18:50

@TheYearOfSmallThings

European supermarkets have a distinctive smell

I agree. Eau de Carrefour.

Yes I miss that smell

Body shop, butchers, at the risk of sounding snobby but cheap shoe shops like shoe zone. Beauty departments of department stores.

maddiemookins16mum · 01/12/2021 18:52

Evans - smells of cheap, stretchy, non iron polyester tops.

Rosecottage888 · 01/12/2021 18:54

@MuggleStudiesResearchProject

LA Senza was always lovely, and then they'd put the little wax beads in with your new undies to make it last even longer.
I used to LOVE the smell of La Senza!
wiklowarrior · 01/12/2021 18:55

Lidl definitely has a smell. It smells the same when I go to Spain.

The Body Shop and and Holland and Barret, how could I forget those two?!

Love the smell of Holland and Barrett, smells all crunchy mum and herbal. Feel like I should be wearing something Bohemian when I walk in Grin

Yes, greasy bread smell. Vom.
Bagadverts · 01/12/2021 18:55

Oh yes book shops, Laura Ashley in a good way. Subway and Lush which I hate (used to feel the same about the Body Shop). Don’t like charity shop smell.

Me too! I have never found anyone else who had that whilst pregnant!

A saddlery shop, the smell of the new leather, can’t beat it.

justaddcandlelight · 01/12/2021 19:09

Abercrombie always used to smell of their signature aftershave. The chemist in our village, is very old fashioned and has a particular smell. It's quite comforting. I've never noticed the smell of next and I think I'm the only person in the world that doesn't mind the smell of lush.

Georgyporky · 01/12/2021 19:11

Holland & Barratt has a really weird, unpleasant smell. Strange, as all their factory-produced foodstuffs are packaged.

0blio · 01/12/2021 19:12

WH Smith shops absolutely stink. They smell of old newspapers and damp.

Carpet shops smell lovely, as do furniture shops - it's the leather sofas.

When I was little I hated grocers' shops as they always seemed to smell of cheese and boiled ham.

IamNannyPlum · 01/12/2021 19:14

Fat face has a horrible musty/chemical smell. Even the clothes reek.
