I’ve lost £400 😡

Not really sure why I’m posting. Although if someone could l me where it is then that would be fab.

Took £9k out of bank a couple of weeks ago. Having various jobs done in the house so this was to pay for all (exact amount)

Paid the balance of trade #1
Had trade #3 do a job that I hadn’t withdrawn money for, so paid him (£250).
Paid trade #2 £2k of the £5600 that I owed him.

The amount I should have should be £250 short. Only it’s not is £650 short.

Money was in cupboard. Then handbag. Then drawer. Then realised it was short.

Have checked with bank incase they made an error. Nope. There’s only need and DS14 in house, it’s 💯 not him. He has money, he’s quiet, and actually no need for money. I know there’s probably much rolling of eyes but honestly he wouldn’t have it in him.

I’ve checked everywhere. Counted money. Re done sums.

The literal only thing I can think of is I’ve over paid someone. #1 probably. He was a bit of a lad and wouldn’t own up I wouldn’t have thought: doubtful #3 as I’d have noticed. And I think #2 would have told me.

I’m so fucking cross with myself. Keep hoping I’ve actually missed something, and it’s a mistake. I’ve had that much going on. Actually there was #4 who cut trees but I withdrew cash for him separately. This is why I never do stuff.

Rant over.

Anyone know where the money is? TIA

Def not son. He’s got a shit ton of money in the bank he never spends… literally no interest in money whatsoever

ItsAllAboutTheLighting · 08/11/2021 21:11

Did your son have friends rounds?

GreyhoundG1rl · 08/11/2021 21:14

Moneystupidly was in a cupboard downstairs although no one would have known it was there
It was still an open house, and available to any speculative light fingered person who fancied having a rummage?

Redtartanshoes · 08/11/2021 21:15

No friends round.

Yy to “open house” though ☹️

If it’s been in a drawer have you checked some of it hasn’t fallen down the back and into a lower drawer or straight down to the base/floor.

BoredZelda · 08/11/2021 21:18

To be honest I’m starting to think someone had taken it rather than miscounted.

If that’s the case, I’d be having words with your son rather than the trades. It’s far more likely to be him than them. Tradesmen don’t go round pinching cash from people.

BoredZelda · 08/11/2021 21:19

Irrelevant, still could have taken in. The trades will also have a shit ton of money in the bank.

RussianSpy101 · 08/11/2021 21:21

YABU to think it’s probably builder 1 as he was “a bit of a lad”

RussianSpy101 · 08/11/2021 21:22

@Redtartanshoes the tradesmen will probably also have a “shit ton” of money in the bank. More than a teenager I would imagine. Unless they’re shit.

AutistAwayWithUrConditionalLuv · 08/11/2021 21:30

It doesn't help your situation now but best to always have proof of payment. Paying cash can come back to bite you in the arse. It wouldn't matter if you took the exact amount from your bank if you can't show where it went.

Hope you find the money.

Redtartanshoes · 08/11/2021 21:31

Ok “a bit of a lad” I meant he was a bit… dunno. Something I didn’t like about him. Lots of excuses. But eventually did the job.

Absolutely 💯 not ds. I know. Everyone says that. He just wouldn’t.it wouldn’t even cross his mind. He has my access to my bank card to buy fifa points… he always asks. He’s never been in any trouble, he’s super kind and yeah, it’s just me and him, he wouldn’t. I’d trust him with my life. Honestly.

I know the exact pit of the stomach sick feeling that comes with the realisation of losing something, usually money!
All the comments about bank transfers etc would have been helpful BEFORE you withdrew and paid them, what you need now is a virtual hug and a bit of empathy!
The other week my elderly mum almost paid £120 instead of £60 she intended, it's only cos I said check the notes haven't stuck together that she realised. They're a bugger for it, so could well have happened, especially if you were counting out large amounts and had a lot going on.
Is there any possibility that notes could be stuck together now - so there is more left than you thought?
So DS is not a concern and that's brilliant but like others have asked - who else has been in the house?
If someone has stolen it rather than you mistakenly over paying it, then sadly it's going to be someone who has a reason to be in your home again, either socially or to do work, because if it had been a one off like the lad ish tradesman then they would be more likely to take all of it.
Could you find a way to make peace with it, like maybe they were in a desperate situation?
Obviously that's up to you but I am sorry it happened to you although I am glad you didn't loose more!

IAmTheLovechildOfYvesAndIsabel · 08/11/2021 21:42

** lose not loose, obvs 😁

Redtartanshoes · 08/11/2021 21:47

I think making peace is exactly what I need to do instead of chewing over it. Work is super stressful just now, my mum is in HDU and really although it’s a total twat to have it gone I can afford it, no one is going to go without:

Thanks for listening. Smile

Did you count it after receiving it ?

I withdrew a sun like that once - got to the car and I was a couple of hundred short. The bank teller just handed it me in an envelope.

Weirdly I went back and they gave the difference straight to me Confused

Queenie6655 · 08/11/2021 22:00

@Redtartanshoes

I honestly never have cash, I just asked these guys how they wanted paying and they said cash.

Just counted again. Still £400 “short”

I find this too OP Most insist that they get cash!!!
OnTheBoardwalk · 08/11/2021 22:02

I’m really surprised at all the bank tellers taking a couple of hundred quid out of people’s deposits especially as everything is doubled checked by a person or a machine

Did you complain to the manager and head office? These people should have been security checked and fired on the spot for this

IAmTheLovechildOfYvesAndIsabel · 08/11/2021 22:05

Sorry about your mum, that can't be easy. Sounds like you've got a lot on and personally I find having people in to do work, really stressful.
Hopefully your home will be sorted now before winter arrives and you two can enjoy it. Your son sounds lovely by the way!

Opalfeet · 08/11/2021 22:07

Awww that's nice about your son though, sounds lovely!

youvegottenminuteslynn · 08/11/2021 22:11

Sorry about your mum Thanks

secretbookcase · 08/11/2021 22:15

When bank notes are new they very easily stick together. You could have overpaid a few people without realising. Ask them. And just use online banking from now on. It's so easy!

Somanysocks · 08/11/2021 22:16

Why not ask the trades if you overpaid them by mistake, they may have thought you paid them extra as a tip, or maybe they haven't actually counted what you gave them. It can't hurt to ask.

I’m sorry things are so tough for you right now OP. Don’t beat yourself up about the money … Things happen … it’s disappointing but instead of berating yourself … … please give yourself a huge pat on the back for all the many things you are dealing with and achieving .

Take care of yourself x

Pumpkinsonparade · 08/11/2021 22:24

Just wanted to point out some people do have dc that are never any trouble /never been in any trouble.
My ds is now 27 and never ever been a single jot of worry to me!
Until he left home. Now I always worry!
Hand bag op?
Purse?
Coat?

LanaDelBoy · 08/11/2021 22:29

Check the very front face/back panel of the drawer. Someone here lost a passport and it'd gotten inside the wooden panel or something.
