Not really sure why I’m posting. Although if someone could l me where it is then that would be fab.

Took £9k out of bank a couple of weeks ago. Having various jobs done in the house so this was to pay for all (exact amount)

Paid the balance of trade #1
Had trade #3 do a job that I hadn’t withdrawn money for, so paid him (£250).
Paid trade #2 £2k of the £5600 that I owed him.

The amount I should have should be £250 short. Only it’s not is £650 short.

Money was in cupboard. Then handbag. Then drawer. Then realised it was short.

Have checked with bank incase they made an error. Nope. There’s only need and DS14 in house, it’s 💯 not him. He has money, he’s quiet, and actually no need for money. I know there’s probably much rolling of eyes but honestly he wouldn’t have it in him.

I’ve checked everywhere. Counted money. Re done sums.

The literal only thing I can think of is I’ve over paid someone. #1 probably. He was a bit of a lad and wouldn’t own up I wouldn’t have thought: doubtful #3 as I’d have noticed. And I think #2 would have told me.

I’m so fucking cross with myself. Keep hoping I’ve actually missed something, and it’s a mistake. I’ve had that much going on. Actually there was #4 who cut trees but I withdrew cash for him separately. This is why I never do stuff.

Rant over.

Anyone know where the money is? TIA

@TheVolturi

We recently paid money into the bank after selling a motorcycle. Buyer paid cash. We counted it at home. Dh first then me. Then together. £6800. Paid into bank. They said total £6700. We said no there is £6800. They said sorry we won't know if we've counted wrong until we tally up at the end of the day! We were not happy. They said they'd ring us. They didn't. We had to ring them and they said there was no extra money. So we 'lost' £100 or the bank did, or the cashier stole it. We will never know!
didn't the cashier count it in front of you when you deposited it. or didn't you count it out as you pushed it under the window to the cashier.

My aunt had good system for cash handling. If she was to distribute/pay £10k, she would have counted exaxt amounts into an envelope each, wrote how much was in each and for whom. Counted off to hand over the actual amount to a builder in front of him, written on the envelope when and to whom she gave it, written in her main ledgers/piece of paper the same.
I guess that how accounts were balanced off in the past. Before electronic transfers of money we brought to us.

You don’t see a problem with paying someone thousands in cash ? What no you don’t withdraw £9k in cash . If a tradesman asked for cash it’d be a no bank transfer or chq .
Lesson learned op don’t do that again for this reason.

DH owns a building firm and the amount of customers that ask for the cash price after he has sent a quotation would shock you all I’m sure.
It’s not always the tradesmen who are looking to cut corners.
Also don’t assume all cash jobs are fiddles. Cash can and is regularly paid into business accounts. Tradesmen, like everyone, also apply for mortgages and other financial products and not all of them want to look like they earn the bare minimum!

OP, in this situation I try to think that the person who got it must have really needed it, and let it go with the thought that I hope it really helped them.

Not perfect to lose money but once it's gone, it's gone and that helps me stop fretting if you know what I mean.

dontgobaconmyheart · 09/11/2021 08:23

It all seems a bit odd OP. I would search the house, including DS room, and go from there. Have you asked your DS if he saw anything? What is the harm?

Would tradesmen actually have had the opportunity to come upon the cash wherever you stored it to take it? Ultimately if you believe it was stolen you should call the police and report it.

As you say hindsight is a wonderful thing but paying that amount in cash is bizarre. I hope you asked for a proper receipt upon handing it over. Was it not counted out wirh them at the time to confirm everyone was happy?

A little off topic, but I got three quotes in for the rebuild of an outside wall in London. All of them quoted on the basis that it would be a cash job. It didn't get done!
