I’ve lost £400 😡

Not really sure why I’m posting. Although if someone could l me where it is then that would be fab.

Took £9k out of bank a couple of weeks ago. Having various jobs done in the house so this was to pay for all (exact amount)

Paid the balance of trade #1
Had trade #3 do a job that I hadn’t withdrawn money for, so paid him (£250).
Paid trade #2 £2k of the £5600 that I owed him.

The amount I should have should be £250 short. Only it’s not is £650 short.

Money was in cupboard. Then handbag. Then drawer. Then realised it was short.

Have checked with bank incase they made an error. Nope. There’s only need and DS14 in house, it’s 💯 not him. He has money, he’s quiet, and actually no need for money. I know there’s probably much rolling of eyes but honestly he wouldn’t have it in him.

I’ve checked everywhere. Counted money. Re done sums.

The literal only thing I can think of is I’ve over paid someone. #1 probably. He was a bit of a lad and wouldn’t own up I wouldn’t have thought: doubtful #3 as I’d have noticed. And I think #2 would have told me.

I’m so fucking cross with myself. Keep hoping I’ve actually missed something, and it’s a mistake. I’ve had that much going on. Actually there was #4 who cut trees but I withdrew cash for him separately. This is why I never do stuff.

Rant over.

Anyone know where the money is? TIA

@Redtartanshoes

Well I’ve not got it, it’s gone. Lost. Whatever

I honestly didn’t see a problem with paying cash, although hindsight is a wonderful thing

Do you never consider that tradespeople are not declaring the work/ paying tax when you pay cash?
ARGHHHHHHEY · 08/11/2021 19:59

Other people's dishonesty is not the OPs issue really is it?

cherrypiepie · 08/11/2021 19:59

You have paid £5740
You think you have £2900 remaining
Total £8640

You started with £9100

You are missing £460

Not necessarily with small amounts. If you're a business, you get charged for every bank transaction - cash in hand avoids bank charges. So small traders who prefer cash can be totally legit. But I agree anyone wanting thousands in cash is dodgy. You're also at risk of them denying that they were paid - did you get a receipt, OP?

cherrypiepie · 08/11/2021 20:03

I should say sorry as it really stressful losing money and I'm sure you are being harsh on yourself so try and think where it could be as it's a lot to misplace or miscount.

Hope it turns up.

TwigTheWonderKid · 08/11/2021 20:03

Didn't they count it in front of you when they gave you the receipt?

mam0918 · 08/11/2021 20:03

'Money was in cupboard. Then handbag. Then drawer.'

so you moved it multiple times from an unsecured place to an unsecured place?

You haven't said what these tradesmen are for or who has access to your house but it could be half-inched at any point honestly.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 08/11/2021 20:06

This is what bank transfers are for.

Keeping £1000’s in a drawer is madness.

Redtartanshoes · 08/11/2021 20:09

To be honest I’m starting to think someone had taken it rather than miscounted.

I’m actually bloody organised thanks very much. Head of department for U.K. Also busy single mum, working from home, juggling stuff.

Was rough casting and sofits/fascia’s/front door for those asking. It’s been quite stressy, like I said managing it myself, whilst working, mum in HDU with cancer.

I’ve taken my eye off the ball and lost £400. Just sat and worked it all out again, it’s not here, I’ve not miscounted. It’s gone. Shit but not the end of the world. Won’t go with food/heating

It is literally insane to do this all in cash.

Do you not use online banking to make payments? Lots of things (kids activities etc) insist on this.

ThorsLeftNut · 08/11/2021 20:17

We have slot of jobs going and and not one of our tradesmen will accept cash. It’s all done through the bank so I’d recommend you do too going forward.

TillyTopper · 08/11/2021 20:19

Why are you paying cash? Is it so you don't pay VAT?

Redtartanshoes · 08/11/2021 20:20

I honestly never have cash, I just asked these guys how they wanted paying and they said cash.

Just counted again. Still £400 “short”

If she's colluding in it by paying nine grand in cash it very much is Hmm Op, I can't actually work out if you've found the cash or not Confused You've said "it's right now", but apparently it isn't?
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/11/2021 20:30

Not necessarily, DH is often paid in cash and like a lot of other people he declares it. He doesn't take card and a lot of his customers don't use bank transfer.

Cakequeen1988 · 08/11/2021 20:31

People who ask specifically to be paid in cash then know that there is a large amount of cash in the home.

Pay by bank transfer in future and avoid payment by cash. Any reputable tradesperson will be happy with a bank transfer

Do you see the problem now that you've lost some? Bank transfer is quick and simple and is an acceptable way to pay someone rather than have thousands of pounds in your house.
Alwayswonderedwhy · 08/11/2021 20:34

Why can't you just pay by bank transfer?

Floralnomad · 08/11/2021 20:35

If someone said to me they wanted cash I’d assume a bank transfer would be fine , it goes through in minutes and they can then get the cash . Check all your drawers and cupboards just in case you’ve moved it .

Redtartanshoes · 08/11/2021 20:35

I absolutely see the problem
Now. Lesson learnt.

Sorry I mean it’s £400 down on what but should be.

OP posts:
Notaroadrunner · 08/11/2021 20:36

Call each of the ones you have paid and ask if there's a chance you overpaid by mistake. They might have a bit of decency if one of them has it.

HaroldSteptoesHorse · 08/11/2021 20:37

Have you added all the spends up again and again and then again. Could you have used some of it to pay for shopping, petrol etc

GreyhoundG1rl · 08/11/2021 20:37

Have you double checked everywhere it's been? It's certainly done a lot of travelling around your house...

TatianaBis · 08/11/2021 20:37

So you’ve counted 20s as 10s I think.

Bluemoononkentucky · 08/11/2021 20:40

Did you maybe separate some out, into an envelope or something, ready to pay one them or for something else but, when it came time, forgot and paid from the original cash stack?

Just an idea. You must be so annoyed.

Good luck finding it.
