Friend is hijacking our weekend away with her Body Shop shite

In a fortnights time DH and I are going away with some other friends for a weekend away in a cottage. One of my friends has recently joined the Body shop cult at home and has been pushing it any excuse she gets.

She’s now suggested the girls in the group have a ‘pamper evening’ which basically just means her trying to sell to us. Of the 8 of us, 2 have already said ‘great idea can’t wait’ and another ive spoken to isn’t keen on the products but wants to support her. I don’t want to fall out over this but I really don’t want to waste a Saturday night when I don’t agree with MLM and hate what it’s doing to my friend!!

How to approach this tactfully?

Does anyone actually enjoy these multiple family weekends away?

Brefugee · 10/11/2021 10:24

Yes

saraclara · 10/11/2021 10:33

Yes

I'd rather be put feet first into a blender.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 10/11/2021 11:42

Just snorted out loud at this 😁

@Youngatheart00

One of my friends used the sensitive skin / allergies line. It was a mistake as she then got bombarded with a schpiel about which ranges were best for what skin type blah blah blah

Does anyone actually make money??!

My local mums group is full of this. Someone asks 'what's good for eczema in a one year old' and instead of people replying saying ask the doctor or chemist, or something sensible like Oilatum junior, nearly every reply is 'tropic super paradise balm is amazing hun' and after a conversation it turns out the person commenting is of course selling it Hmm

@MissTrip82

Really?

You’ve never encountered a socially awkward situation like this? Not once?

You can’t even imagine such a situation arising?

How absolutely extraordinary

This isn’t a socially awkward situation unless you make it one by lying. You can just be polite and straightforward. Don’t cultivate friends who think you are in some way responsible for them and you shouldn’t have any fallout from saying a polite “No thanks.” to a request like this.

TheMissingMango · 10/11/2021 19:37

Casually put the Kirsten Dunst tv show 'On Becoming a God in Florida' on in the background. Dark comedy about a family sucked into MLM scam set in a water park in the 1980s.

How on Earth can people still be falling for this crap.... MLM: how to lose friends, dignity and cash.

Binglebong · 10/11/2021 20:04

Just added that to my To Watch list Mango - thanks!

Grin

I'd have to have my own personal margarita blender next to me to deal.

RozHuntleysStump · 10/11/2021 21:04

I just started the Kirsten Dunst show. Can’t believe I missed this. I’m really enjoying it.

RampantIvy · 10/11/2021 21:07

Which channel is it on? Netflix?

RozHuntleysStump · 10/11/2021 21:18

Netflix

Youngatheart00 · 10/11/2021 21:42

People…..guess what?

The sales pitch is OFF!!!!!

She posted a message on our girls group along the lines of ‘a few people have mentioned they’d prefer to do this another time when we are not as rushed’

HURRAH

It’s off without me having to sacrifice any friendships. Phew.

Great news!

Enjoy your weekend away, and make sure you’re busy when she rearranges!

Youngatheart00 · 10/11/2021 21:49

I most certainly will be busy when she rearranges - thankfully there aren’t any more group ambush sessions for probably another 6 months or so and fingers crossed by then she’ll have given up on it all

Fabulous, best outcome possible. It would probably still be wise to warn your DH that nobody wants Body Shop for Christmas, least of all you.

Platax · 10/11/2021 21:53

Perhaps you can gang up with the others to begin planting the seeds of doubt about MLM in her mind?

BoredZelda · 10/11/2021 21:54

I'd rather an MLM pitch than a childrens concert on a Friday night! lol

Me too, and I’m really MLM.

BoredZelda · 10/11/2021 21:54

*Really ANTI MLM

sittingonacornflake · 10/11/2021 21:57

Fantastic news.

But can I just confess that I'm a really nosy bitch and I'm now very invested in your weekend away and would still love it if you would report back to us next week and let us know how it went Grin

BoredZelda · 10/11/2021 21:58

I thought about this thread today as one of the BS huns on my FB posted one of those “guys pick a number” type competitions to win “this bad boy” - a body shop advent calendar, to “raise funds” for the primary school Christmas Fayre. They really will stop at nothing.
