Is it me or is the new Rod Stewart song a bit ‘off’?!

It’s called ‘One More Time’ and I keep hearing it on radio 2.

Every time I hear the lyrics I feel uncomfortable - maybe because it’s an old man clearly harassing a younger girl for sex ‘one last time’ until she relents!

Grim….or am I being daft?!!

@TheDogsMother

I'm so glad it's not just me ! He wants a last shag with a girlfriend he no longer wants to be with. She's saying no and she shouldn't and he is badgering and cajoling like some sort of sex pest. Not nearly as bad as the lyrics of Tonight's the Night though which is utterly creepy.
There's nothing in there at all that suggests she's saying no and he is pestering her.
AFuturisticalSound · 11/10/2021 08:18

@gardeninggirl68

I don't think the lyrics were written for him though

What's wrong with him still working in his 70's?

Lots of little ages related dogs going on here on this thread, which will multiply, I'm sure

I heard him on Zoe Ball and I'm sure he said he wrote the song about the aftermath of a break up and wanting to see the person one more time in a generic sense

Maybe he didnt specifically say he wrote every word but he said the album is from his life experience and for him

I like Rod but agree that this isn't his best work.

TheDogsMother · 11/10/2021 08:36

He was interviewed by Zoe Ball and specifically said is was about breaking up but the sex was great so he wanted it one more time before he left her to get back on the road with his country band. If you listen to the American woman's voice towards the end of the track she is saying no and she shouldn't and he sounds like he is pestering her. I'm not saying it's Rod Stewart personally saying it or he's too old, more that the lyrics are a bit off as OP said.

Blankspace4 · 11/10/2021 08:38

@TheDogsMother it’s exactly that - when the American lady is saying no repeatedly!

I remember all the furore about Baby It’s Cold Outside which has a similar sentiment - that said I wasn’t necessarily up for sanitising the lyrics of an old song, however to release something like this now is more than a little tone-deaf

All that aside though it is a shite song anyway.

CherryDocsInYrBalls · 11/10/2021 08:45

I agree op. I think posters have missed the pestering talking part towards the end. And the fact it's 2021 some of the other songs referenced are decades old and songwriters should know better now, no matter the age of the character in the song, it's normalising women's boundaries should be ignored as standard.

justamushypea · 23/11/2021 13:26

Something about RS has always given me the creeps. Don't even know why.
I don't like the song at all

Journeyofthedragons · 23/11/2021 13:38

I heard him on Zoe Ball and I'm sure he said he wrote the song about the aftermath of a break up and wanting to see the person one more time in a generic geriatric sense.

FTFY

icelollycraving · 23/11/2021 13:41

Is this the song that was shown on gogglebox? Their reactions made me really laugh Grin

Theywalkamongstus · 23/11/2021 13:43

I'd be pretty put out if I was Penny though.

DeadoftheMoon · 23/11/2021 13:47

Haven't heard it. The lyrics are mildly creepy. The idea of knowing you're splitting up but having 'one more time' is pretty unpleasant but was commonplace in songs years ago ... Andy Williams 'For The Good Times', Diana Ross 'Touch Me In The Morning'. I haven't heard the pestering at the end so maybe that makes it worse. He was born around the end of WW2, his lived experience is very different from most mumsnetters, he might not be as aware of the issues. Or, being and rich, old white man, he might not care.

AlbertBridge · 23/11/2021 13:49

I heard a song from the new RS album on radio 2 last week - "I Can't Imagine" - and his voice is RIDICULOUS now. Why is he putting on that awful fake American accent?! It's like he listened to Dolly Parton on repeat over lockdown and it's stuck.

peachescariad · 23/11/2021 13:49

Song is shit and he's a knackered old twat.....IMO

SequinsandStiIettos · 23/11/2021 13:59

It was hilarious. What with the dancing, the spanking, the obscure chat in the middle, the Robert Palmeresque backing band - except this lot can sing and play and are all blonde- I think one on Gogglebox asked if they were all his ex wives. Wink As to the song, it's an earworm infuriatingly. Maybe Penny can arrest him for crimes against music. Not my thing personally but fair play, still going for it.

Anordinarymum · 23/11/2021 14:03

They are all at it. It's to pay for Christmas innit

madisonbridges · 23/11/2021 14:09
**@TheDogsMother* and @MrsTerryPratchett* thank you - that’s exactly what I’m talking about.

I’m not easily offended but this makes me grimace every time I hear it.

No issues with the older generation making music but does it really need to be this sleazy??! The world has moved on.
I'd rather have a bit of sleazy, one more time for old times sake, than the reference to bitches and hos in other songs. Now they're seriously songs to criticise.

SequinsandStiIettos · 23/11/2021 14:18

one more time for old times sake, than the reference to bitches and hos in other songs true, this is more hoe-down than down with the hos Wink

Yeah! It was on Graham Norton a couple of weeks ago. It was hilarious
midsomermurderess · 23/11/2021 14:27

The Graham Norton appearance was hilarious and toe-curling in equal measure. When he slaps his arse when singing 'you taught me how to nasty' will linger long in my memory. He also looked as if he'd put his back out by the end. The other quests looked as if they didn't quite know what to do with themselves.

😂😂😂😂😂

PrawnStars · 23/11/2021 14:46

That performance really cheered me up

Never seen anything like it. The enthusiastic ass slapping, the 'nasty' comment, the fake American speak singing, the squatting as he demonstrated driving his 'beat up Jaguar.'

Whole thing was priceless. I cringed my ovaries inside out

Mossstitch · 23/11/2021 15:44

@MintyGreenDream 😂👏😂 I watched a few seconds and had to turn off I cringed so much but Rod Stewart always has that effect on me. He's just been on loose women and comes across sooo seedy and arrogant, don't know what Penny sees in him.

On a more serious note, I think a lot of older singers need to stop at a certain point, their voices loose power and he was definitely 'off key' on some of the notes. Better to go out whilst still on top form. Much as I loved ABBA first time around I just find it sad to look at them now regrouping and............ Same applies to me looking in the mirror 🙈

fedup65356 · 23/11/2021 15:48

Not as creepy/rapey as Tonight's The Night - which should never have been allowed airplay.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/11/2021 17:09

What on earth does 'you taught me how to nasty' even mean? Scratching my head, the only thing I can think it might mean is 'you toilet trained me' ?!?! Grin

The hook in the chorus always makes me start singing 'Hands up! Baby, hands up! Give me your heart, gimmee, gimmee" !

Mind, the new Sting song has echoes of 'The Ugly Duckling' (as observed by Ken Bruce); and the new Abba one always makes me thing of 'Wombling Merry Christmas' !
