Happening now.
Not sure what this means for the average user

Is Boris getting the Army IT Regiment ready?

Feelingoktoday · 04/10/2021 19:35

I’ve just had to phone a landline 🤷🏻‍♀️

PicsInRed · 04/10/2021 19:36

@PickAChew

Somebody probably updated the firewall and buggered everything.
Have they tried turning it off and then turning it back on again?
Siriisatwat · 04/10/2021 19:37

I wish it had taken fucking Roblox down with it.

@AdobeWanKenobi

Quote from the cyber guy at cloudflare:

Dane Knecht, Senior VP of web security firm Cloudflare, says the Facebook Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routes, used by networks to deliver internet traffic, have been 'withdrawn from the internet.'

Cybersecurty expert, Kevin Beaumont, wrote on Twitter: 'This one looks like a pretty epic configuration error, Facebook basically don't exist on the internet right now. Even their authoritative name server ranges have been BGP withdrawn.'

DS tells me this basically means the roadmap by which your devices access FB etc has been deleted.

Heylp could you put this into language a 50 something woman with rubbish tech knowledge could maybe grasp, pls?
PlonkyWillyWonky · 04/10/2021 19:38

Ah thank you, I thought it was all a bit odd

BGP Deleted? That will be fun, we are going to have some very slow services for a few days.

It may be the universe telling us to get of our phones and talk to the other people in the house 😁

YNK · 04/10/2021 19:42

I'm not tech minded at all but I bred a computer genious who has worked for google now for many years.

He once took down BBC I-player on a saturday night in a previous job.

There's probably some poor young techy getting the blame and now everybody thinks it's terrorism!

AdobeWanKenobi · 04/10/2021 19:42

@FlibbertyGiblets this is what I asked both ds and dsil who both work in IT.
When you log on to FB you are directed to their servers, so your computer, tablet or phone follows a map to the destination. Somehow that map to servers has gone and been deleted. It could be accidental, it could be a targeted attack.

It’s interesting timing with the whistleblower thing from yesterday. All I know is it turns out DH is quite a nice bloke to chat to 😂

Someone cocking up would be the better scenario because fb holds a lot of data on us, including I imagine billions of phone numbers via WhatsApp.
If it is what techies are suggesting you’re right though, it’s no quick fix.

GiantCrab · 04/10/2021 19:45

My company runs on WhatsApp. Updates sent twice a day. Had a wee snooze this afternoon and wondered why the evenings updates hadn't come through (day off, buts it's a largo company group chat) i thought my WhatsApp was broken until i saw the news splash.

GiantCrab · 04/10/2021 19:46

Can someone explain the Pandora papers thing please?

montypythonscupoftea · 04/10/2021 19:49

They would never ever admit it if it was a cyber attack, too much of your information is gathered on there right down to what ads you look at at what you post, what you have liked, what you have laughed at, what had made you put an angry face on a post- which is then used by people like me who are able to target specific people to see my ads - and Facebook charge handsomely for that information. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Facebook has a political opinion and regularly sways public voting.

Anything you do on Facebook/insta/watsap is there's to do as they choose with - including reading your messages and scanning for key words.

I really do hope its been attacked - its got way too big for its boots.

Anti Vaxxers all over the world are picking up books
😂

Ladywinesalot · 04/10/2021 20:08

I wonder what’s being covered up?

The Australian Goverment are cracking down hard over covid restrictions.
Cutting off anyone’s internet and social media if they are speaking out about the camps or organising protests.

This is a purposeful blackout…

Are they cutting off social.media? Wow. I hadn't seen anything about this. Where is it reported? Shock
PlonkyWillyWonky · 04/10/2021 20:14

It's like a plot from a James Bond film

Are you suggesting that the Aussie government did this? To the world? To censor the entire world?

If so, I think you're giving them faaaaar too much credit...new world order notwithstanding.

Yes, they will be transmitting posts via semaphore.

What is the semaphore for ‘some twat just posted a picture of their dinner’? Does anyone know?

Icewiththat · 04/10/2021 20:25

Is it still down? Mine says ‘no internet connection’ ??

Nobranothanks · 04/10/2021 20:26

Yeah it is and Virgin Media are also having issues 🤔

AdobeWanKenobi · 04/10/2021 20:27

According to Twitter staff are struggling to gain access to the building because their passes aren't working either. Oops.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 04/10/2021 20:29

I've got Virgin Media & touch wood it's still working
