I love the Dua Lupa song and there is a Blue song I love. But please can people tell me why Elton John is so legendary. He doesn't have the best singing voice, does he?

OP posts:
TSSDNCOP · 04/10/2021 20:36

I love Elton and I've seen him many times, including a memorable live duet with George Michael, who I think even OP would agree can carry a tune.

Even I would agree that his voice has gone now, but I think the number of "young" musicians that have and do collaborate with him and are supported by him speaks volumes of the respect in which he is held.

His early 80's stuff I'm Still Standing and I guess that's why they call it the blues" got me hooked as a teen that loved the Jam, Bowie, Duran Duran.

OP, everyone's entitled to their opinion but credit where it's due.

flippertyop · 04/10/2021 20:41

@Duckypoohs I also love placebo. It agree. Can you imagine if Brian was an unknown and stood up to do Karodame everyone would be like wtf 😂

bridgeofslides · 04/10/2021 20:41

@Wandawide

Before he was really big I saw him live in Plymouth on stage in a cinema, mainly just him at the piano. He didn't just sing in tune he put the song over in such a way that we added extra meaning with our imagination. There are millions of people in choirs all over the world who can sing in tune and have perfect timing but can they deliver? Elton and others deliver. Also remember that he has written a wide range of music. Try some research on Yourtube listen to some of the earlier songs and compare also who were the contemporaries at the different stages of his career.

Johnny Cash

Was it the old ABC?
flippertyop · 04/10/2021 21:03

@yacketyyak how do you know that's not true?

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 04/10/2021 21:21

Things I love about Elton - hes from that magical time when you didn't have to look insta perfect to be famous.

I’m a fellow Eltonian but I don’t agree that we only have shiny and beautiful pop stars now. Ed Sheeran, anyone?

Ed Sheehan is a good point but he's the exception not the rule. And that other fella. Lewis Capaldi. Pop has been destroyed by X factor and the like.

Elderflower14 that's so lovely, thank you.

George's family refuted it

He was rather cute in the early days, I remember thinking.

I don’t understand threads like this. We all have musical tastes that differ. Surely people can comprehend that? An example would be I’m no fan of the who and don’t really think roger daltry was a great singer and I don’t think their songs are excellent either, but plenty of people do and that’s fine.

LastToBePicked · 05/10/2021 12:16

I don’t think anyone has ever held Elton John up an outstanding vocalist. But as a songwriter, pianist, performer, showman…an icon!

Your Song, Tiny Dancer, Rocketman, I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues, Saturday Night’s Alright, Philadelphia Freedom, I’m Still Standing…to name but a few absolute classics.

ShagMeRiggins · 05/10/2021 15:45

@Innocenta

All I meant by running it by someone was that I'm not a musician or anything myself, *@ShagMeRiggins* ! Sorry, I guess that came off as some kind of weird put down, but I really did just mean it as "I don't know enough about this on my own"! My apologies, and yes, both amazing voices Thanks
Absolutely no problem whatsoever. No need for apologies. Grin
ShagMeRiggins · 05/10/2021 15:53

That was for @Innocenta but I don’t know if a quote tags someone in or not.

Nor do I know if posters want to be tagged, actually. I always work on the idea that if they don’t want to be tagged they’ll turn off the notifications for it.

Back to Elton—and how many have mentioned Tiny Dancer—it’s a great example of an overlooked song. Didn’t really make an impact until Cameron Crowe’s film Almost Famous had the scene of the band singing it.

Great moment, but I’m a sucker for an unexpected, organic singalong, much like the scene in Tommy Boy, where David Spade and Chris Farley end up in tears singing along to Superstar by The Carpenters. Aaaahhh...

MuthaFunka61 · 07/10/2021 00:00

Crikey!

I've never been an Elton fan but watching Rocketman had me in tears and now The Red Piano gig both on 4 tonight has given me a new respect for him as a human and a musician.

Elderflower14 · 07/10/2021 06:13

Taron was robbed of the BA Oscar. He got the GG but not even nominated for an Oscar. He sung all the songs too. Rami Malik mimed in Bohemian Rhapsody and got an Oscar. 🤔 🤔 🤔 🤔

chocolateorangeinhaler · 07/10/2021 06:34

His early vocals and songs from the 70s are fantastic. Really great voice.

But in recent years, no. He sounds more like a club singer doing an impression of Elton John and not pulling it off very well.

The dua lips song is awful, she's very nasal in her style of singing which drives me up the wall when entertainers do that.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/10/2021 06:48

Rocketman was a fantastic film

tiddlysquat · 07/10/2021 06:50

I've met him in a situation when he could have lost his shit at me and he was utterly charming and kind. Will hear nothing bad about him !

HaveringWavering · 07/10/2021 08:43

I once had my bag searched next to him at Heathrow. I was in the priority security Lane because I was flying business (paid for by work) and he was right in front of me. It’s no different to the standard one though, they can pull your bag off to the side and ask you to stand there while they rifle through it. I suspect that security probably search celebs on purpose! For some weird reason both our bags were pulled to the side and then he and I had to stand next to each other while we were checked. We sort of exchanged an eyebrow roll and half smiled. He was very gracious to the security people. He had a boringly plan leather toiletry bag with nothing very interesting inside!

Bullsh · 07/10/2021 08:49

I watched Rocketman last night, really enjoyed it. Great imagery, cleverly put together, sad in parts and some great music. Once it had finished we went onto YouTube and watched some of his other songs, glad we're in a detached house as the volume was maximum. Great evening!

geranium66 · 07/10/2021 08:59

EJ has great creative talent but if you're after a good singer, listen to Adam Lambert, his voice and latest album'Velvet' is amazing.

Innocenta · 07/10/2021 10:19

@geranium66 Heresy! He's no Freddie. Wink

FireMeetGasoline · 10/01/2022 01:22

Not particularly into Elton John, however, Tiny Dancer is up there in my top ten favourite songs of all time. Now, Taron Egerton is a little bit different 😂

NotSoNewAndShiny · 10/01/2022 06:32

To be fair, a lot of male singers don't have the best singing voice IMO. I've always thought this ever since I was very young, listening to all kinds of music. It's almost as if there's a higher standard for women than men Wink when it comes to singing. Men mainly need to be able to carry a tune with a good bass or tenor, and they sound good really.

I'm aware that "good singing voice" is subjective.

That said, I love some of Elton's songs. Never had a problem with his singing or thought about it. Candle In The Wind 1997 version still gets me. I remember him performing it at Princess Diana's funeral - it was a sobering moment.

He's famous for several reasons but I believe people just like him and his songs, great vocalist or not. So many celebs, including women, are famous for less.

KatherineJaneway · 10/01/2022 06:36

He did have an amazing voice. Just listen to Goodbye Yellowbrick Road.
