I love the Dua Lupa song and there is a Blue song I love. But please can people tell me why Elton John is so legendary. He doesn't have the best singing voice, does he?

OP posts:

He's a musical genius, his song writing is legendary. Go and listen to his greatest hits, or album goodbye yellow brick road.

Appreciate with age, he's lost his voice, and do wonder why he keeps touring, but if you look at his career as a whole, you must see the impact he had on musuc.

@GreenLunchBox

He doesn't have a good voice! How has managed to get to where he is?!!Confused
Because he's not just a singer but a songwriter.

Weirdly, we were talking about this today. I watched Rocket man last night. I do love the Dua Lipa co lab at the moment. Always hated his music.
When I lived in Oz I booked tickets to see George Michael live. GM cancelled, but I could see EJ instead. I asked for my money back Blush
Yes, he can play the piano and sing, but I think he’s overrated.

DeedledeDee · 04/10/2021 00:05

Have a listen to the following

Your Song
Candle in the Wind
Crocodile Rock
Saturday Nights All Right for Fighting
Rocket Man

itisthecause · 04/10/2021 00:05

I think the Dua Lipa mix with Elton is a very bland production.

Used to love 'your song' and 'Daniel'

toomuchlaundry · 04/10/2021 00:05

Many pop singers can’t sing, just think of Robbie Williams.

gofg · 04/10/2021 00:07

Lots of singers don't have good voices OP, and as people age their voices change. It sounds to me as though you are young and don't have a lot of musical knowledge. Elton John has been around for decades, has a huge back catalogue and has co-written some amazing songs. Maybe check them out before making such a ridiculous post.

RJnomore1 · 04/10/2021 00:08

He’s not a great singer but most pop singers aren’t

He is though a great songwriter and performer/showman

Duckypoohs · 04/10/2021 00:10

One of my favourite bands is placebo, many would say Brian has a nasally reedy voice. Doesn't detract from my enjoyment, look at Daniel Johnstone or Leonard Cohen or nick cave, hardly the best singers ever. People love them though.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 04/10/2021 00:10

There are loads of successful and much-loved artists who don't have a 'good' voice eg. Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 04/10/2021 00:10

Your Song

I can’t listen to this without crying.

Many singers have technically perfect voices but never make it because music is about more than just singing something the right way. If you don’t have involvement or a connection with the music it shows, it shows. I don’t think anyone else could deliver I’m still standing without Eltons belligerent confidence and backstory. Or give the same enigmatic live performance on a piano.

If what you like is pretty voices singing nice songs you are really limiting yourself. There are much more interesting songs, singers and bands to discover.

itisthecause · 04/10/2021 00:11

He became legendary for many reasons - the music, stage performance, his flamboyance and outfits and wigs, his private life. Friendships, he's alway been friends with the A list , Princess Diana, G Versace, George Micheal etc.

Dasher789 · 04/10/2021 00:12

YANBU - I do like most of his big hits but I don't get the huge hype. I saw him in concert a few years ago with my Mum, I didnt really rate the concert at all. I had expected him to put on a really great show but left a bit disappointed. I wouldn't buy a ticket again.

SpindleWhirl · 04/10/2021 00:12

I think the OP's just been written out of the will.

Duckypoohs · 04/10/2021 00:12

Are there classes for becoming eloquent? Asking for a friend...

Fluffypastelslippers · 04/10/2021 00:14

Please show me tunes that showcase his voice

You could probably just look yourself.

Seriallover · 04/10/2021 00:15

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit

Some (quite a lot actually) of his songs are extremely well written and better sung by others.

He is a talent songwriter.

He doesn't write his own songs. Watch his film. Grin
DerAlteMann · 04/10/2021 00:15

Because his early stuff was brilliant. Went downhill after Madman Across the Water.

DerAlteMann · 04/10/2021 00:16

He doesn't write his own songs

He did in the early days. Bernie Taupin was his lyricist

DerAlteMann · 04/10/2021 00:19

The album Elton John (his second) is one of the all time great albums IMO. "Border Song" is an unrecognised classic although "Your Song" is the track everyone knows.

IndecentCakes · 04/10/2021 00:20

I like him, he's a great creative talent.

salcombebabe · 04/10/2021 00:20

He sang this at Diana’s funeral: m.youtube.com/watch?v=1o9rLDCfO6o

Happylittlethoughts · 04/10/2021 00:22

Absolutely true there are thousands out there with better singing voices. However, if you've ever endured a series of X Factor then you'll surely be aware it's not just about have a technically great singing voice. Its an obvious example but illustrates clearly why it's not all about best technically speaking.

Mistymoors · 04/10/2021 00:23

I loved his early songs but saw him in concert a few years ago what a complete disappointment! He was just going through the motions, absolutely no crowd interaction . It’s the only concert my I have ever left half way through !! The Rolling Stones on the other hand were totally amazing 🙂
