Does anyone else use subtitles all the time?

So since I was a teen I use subtitles when watching tv constantly.
I was watching a dvd at my dads when I was a teen and he said ' why have you got subtitles on?' And it only clicked then that it's not the norm.

I know that it is usually for people hard of hearing but I just feel content knowing I can read what they are saying. If someone has a strong accent I always know I can read what they are saying.

People even say how can you read and watch? Well I take a second to glance at the words then take it in and it's easy to follow the story still.

I've not stopped since my teens and my partner is used to it now.

Does anyone else rely on subtitles?

I’m hard of hearing, so I need them. I’ve never found them distracting, and I feel weird without them. It’s like the tv shows are naked without them! Grin

As I’m HoH, not deaf, I could do without them, but it means I miss words or other information, and I have to actually concentrate to an uncomfortable level. I find it really rude when I’m round someone’s house and they won’t put subtitles on.

I watched Ant-Man that way at my ex in-laws house once. I remember walking home saying to my ex “That was a good movie. I wonder what the hell it was about.”

Rainbows89 · 03/10/2021 17:41

All the time!

Billandben444 · 03/10/2021 17:41

We use them for anything with loud background music, poor enunciation and strong accents - that's most tv now I think of it. I wish films had them as the sound levels are always shitty! And I'm hooked on foreign language dramas from Walter Presents but I can't eat and watch at the same time.

purplesequins · 03/10/2021 17:43

depends
I live in 'forrin' and need subtitles as I sometimes lose important detail.
also sometimes for american shows with strong accents.

Bloodybridget · 03/10/2021 17:43

Yes we usually have subtitles, I find it hard to make out all the dialogue otherwise.

CallyWW · 03/10/2021 17:43

I always have them on!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 03/10/2021 17:43

I do and all my children do also.
Like a previous poster, I'm autistic.

StrongArm · 03/10/2021 17:44

We use them all the time though I had hearing problems as a child, as did dd, so I lip read and find it hard to 'hear' without the subtitles when I can't see their mouths !

romdowa · 03/10/2021 17:45

I can't watch anything with out subtitles , I've adhd and asd and apparently it's very common with nd people

BananaPB · 03/10/2021 17:46

I do it so I don't have to rewind and try and work out what was said.

Batshitkerazy · 03/10/2021 17:48

Yes I have them on

JellyTots2009 · 03/10/2021 17:51

Ah I've found my people!

I never expected so many to do the same.

To the PP who said how can you watch and read. I literally glance at the words for a second and my brain works it out while I'm back watching the scenes. I don't miss a thing.

I am a quick reader and often don't even realise I am reading them, that's how much time it takes to read and get back to the watching.

I don't think I will even turn them off as it's been a huge comfort to me and would feel strange without them.

Obviously in places like cinemas and other peoples houses I just listen and it doesn't brother me much but those times are few and far between.

Yes most of the time now , find most programs actors seem to mumble away or the background music just drowns the dialogue out. Also don’t have to have volume so loud.

Minikievs · 03/10/2021 17:53

I have them on all the time. The kids can't stand it and turn them off.
I do think I'm a bit deaf though as I can't seem to hear the tv no matter how loud it is. Everyone mumbles!
My BF child has issues with noise so if we watch something at his, he has the volume super low so they don't get disturbed by the TV blaring.
By the time a film finishes, I'm exhausted as I've had to concentrate SO HARD on trying to hear it Blush

LoveFall · 03/10/2021 17:53

When watching Netflix or Amazon I use them all the time. In an apartment I like the lower volume it allows and I follow the dialogue better. Odd but it is more relaxing.

DH hates them and I turn them off if we are watching together. I think he reads more slowly and they distract rather than focus him.

I do note a fair number of funny typos in the subtitles!

ButterflyAway · 03/10/2021 17:54

I can’t follow anything on tv without the subtitles on anymore, and I’m not hard of hearing! It just makes more sense to me, being able to read what’s said.

CookPassBabtridge · 03/10/2021 17:55

Yep can't watch without subs now,can hear perfectly!

Bamaluz · 03/10/2021 17:55

Yes, great for police programmes, you don't miss anything.

ButterflyAway · 03/10/2021 17:56

@LoveFall lots of funny typos in the subtitles, but my favourite is where they put spanish laughter (or any other language laughter). I don’t think laughter has a specific language Grin

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 03/10/2021 17:57

I have them on all the time. I find them really comforting. I have a steth in my ears most of the day so I hate having volume on loud.

allofthecheese · 03/10/2021 17:58

I use them all the time too

dorothygaleandtoto · 03/10/2021 17:58

We have a little tv in the kitchen and I have he subtitles on that permanently. There's often something making noise in the kitchen (hob extract, blender, tumble drier etc) and I'd be constantly turning it up and down otherwise.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 03/10/2021 18:00

Probably 80% of the time, I’m early 40’s. I find most TV now is really mumbly dialogue with LOUD incidental music or ads.

Sunbird24 · 03/10/2021 18:02

I have them on all the time too, love the typos!

InFiveMins · 03/10/2021 18:06

I do this too. I find it really, really difficult to follow what is happening in TV shows and feel if I have subtitles on there is less chance of me missing something and becoming more lost with the plot of whatever it is I am watching.
